Chapter 24:
High School Raindrops
Somehow, no one seemed to notice that school that appeared here. Either it was already there, or perhaps magically, people’s minds were rewritten to include it. Both of those conclusions sounded silly, but Hao Hao didn’t have any other guesses.
She blinked into soul sight. The world that was bright with sunlight and crowds went dark, and the crowds felt like they almost dispersed entirely under the darkness. All that she could see clearly was their spirits. She couldn’t talk to them like she did at the border of Shigo. It seems they were too attached to their human counterparts, and through some testing her and some of the others determined that she was invisible to them (spirits and people alike) while in this state as well.
All except Shui, who lingered nearby. It could still see her like normal.
‘Do you think you could take us all there like that?” Alice asked.
Alice and Hao Hao decided to try it. Holding hands, Hao Hao blinked into soul sight as normal, and then she asked, “Do you see it?”
“No. Everything looks the same to me, oh, but I can see Shui again. Hello!”
“Hi!”
Jim nodded. He said, “Then, we stick to the original plan. We’ll go back at night, when no one’s around.”
They nodded and turned back towards the school. As they went back inside, he said, “I’m proud of you, Hao Hao.”
“You are?”
Jim nodded, “You were so nervous the first day you came to school. I hope you can forgive me for being worried about your ability to adjust.”
“Forgive you? You’re the reason I was able to become confident.” Hao Hao said, “You and the school you set up. I don’t know that I would have found myself without it.”
“I agree,” Alice said, “Thank you.”
“I’m glad to hear that. Because… I need to ask you something.”
“What is it?” Hao Hao asked.
“Me and Shinigami are talking about reestablishing the school at the border. It’ll be nicer than this one, because it’ll be approved by her and the other reapers. I was hoping you might help me with running it.”
“We don’t know how to run a school!” Alice held up her hands nervously.
“Not like, run it, run it. I was hoping you might be willing to be… like an between. I’m worried that students will be a little scared of the reapers and won’t talk to us if there’s a problem. Maybe we could set it up where they talk to one of you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Alice nodded in agreement with the plan. Hao Hao took a moment to think about it. She usually found people hard to talk to. She’d made a lot of progress on that front, but she still had a hard time with crowds, but after leading everyone and Shinigami around the school today, maybe that fear was ungrounded.
And so, she said yes. Leaving fear behind, she decided that she could do it as long as she put her whole heart into it, no room for doubt.
