Chapter 10:

The Night Terror

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

Well. Trevor wasn't lying. It is a bit difficult to see. Likely due to his levels, the darkness doesn't appear as dark. He can still make out shapes and colours. The goblin territory is perhaps 30 minutes of walk away. However, after walking 15, he can start hearing noises. A horde, just hanging around. They're right there. Slowly travelling in such a massive group. As long as he's careful from getting hit, he can probably trim that group down a bit. He lowers himself and runs forward. Goblins, having dark vision, do not fail to notice him approaching at great speeds. They scream, the sound of their voices echoing deep into the woods. It's chaos. There's no organisation, there's no teamwork. As if each of them were left to fend for themselves despite following each other. Reaching them, he lunges forward, piercing the head of the first one. A second one approaches, swinging horizontally at him. He dodges and swiftly strike his sword, beheading him.
With his current strength, no goblins can threaten him. Unless they all began ganging on him, there's no risk. And it seems like they lost the ability to do so. One after the next, goblins rush him. With ease, one after the other, he puts them down effortlessly. The screams echoes louder and further. The smaller ones screaming in fear, the bigger ones screaming in anger. The crowd begins to flock toward him with no coordination whatsoever. As long as he avoids getting surrounded, he's fine. Stepping back, taking them down one at a time.

Things seems to be going well. He's getting pretty good exp from this.
Suddenly, a voice raises itself above the others. A bloodcurdling screech echoes through the forest. It's loud and powerful. Complete silence falls. A wave of terror begins to pierce through the stampede.

I've heard this scream before. More than the bandits, more than the goblins, this is the strongest one so far. The werewolf. It only comes out at night, but everyone that has faced it had no fighting chance. It wasn't a fight. It was just pure murder. Their body torn apart with overwhelming strength.

As the goblins panic, trying to flee, the werewolf burst in, slashing multiple of them at a time. A bit smaller than the Goblin King, its size remains no laughing matter. Very few goblins attempt at fighting back, but those attempts are absolutely futile, dealing little to do damage. This thing is tearing them apart like it's nothing.

Staying away from the werewolf at all cost, Saito keeps on going, gradually taking them down. If he leaves now and most goblins make it out alive, they'll still raid the village later on. There were perhaps around a hundred goblins. But with the swordman taking them down one at a time and the great beast slaying many at once, their numbers very rapidly thinned down. Enough so that Saito began to worry for himself. (It's probably about time I leave).

The werewolf is very much likely to hunt the remaining ones on its own. His eyes looks at it once more. Of a great black fur, its nocturnal eyes look terrifying. Its claws much larger than his magical ones. Now choosing to head back, he buffs himself using his spells and sprints back toward the village, leaping forward. At this speed, he should be back in 2 minutes. However, as he begins to see the houses at the distance, the sound of something stumping begins to echo behind him. Something is catching up. Even with his physical prowess and its magic, this thing is a lot faster than he is. With terror and anticipating, he tries to go as fast as possible, anxiety reaching its peak as it feels like its right behind him in the darkness. The sound of its groaning, its panting, thirsting for yet another kill, rising up behind his ear. He trips forward as he reaches the light, hitting the floor, barely avoiding a spike. He lands against a barricade, terrified, arms raised to protect himself.

"SOMETHING MADE A SOUND THERE!"
Terrified, he looks up. It's gone. There's nothing there. There's no way he imagined that. Did it simply stop pursuing him because it doesn't like the light?

"Hey. You good? What happened?"
He looks up. Multiple faces looking down at him, forks and torches at hand, looking worried.

"I.. I think so. The werewolf chased me."

At the mention of the werewolf, all their faces clearly display anxiety and fear. If there is one creature nobody wants to mess with, it's that one. The only reason why no other creature has dared to set food in this forest is because of it. They quickly raise their torches, trying to look into the woods. But nothing can be seen.

"Okay, get up."
Right. He quickly gets up, hopping over the fence.

"What about the goblins?"
"I killed a lot of them. I think their screams upsetted the werewolf too and it went on a killing spree. He killed most of them."

There's a silence.
"We won't have to worry about goblins as much then. We'll still set up patrols. The remaining ones could get funny ideas if they start to starve. Thank you young boy"

"I'm an adult."
"You still look like a boy to me, go drink something"

Saito smiles. Feels reassuring to know someone has your back. He doesn't recognise that man.
Feeling dizzy, probably from a burst in adrenaline, he begins to walk back toward his shelter. He quietly opens the door and quietly closes it, careful not to wake anyone up.

"Welcome back" Softly speaks the lady.
"Oh, thank you. You're not going to bed?"

She shakes her head.
"I'm too worried about my husband. We also were worried about you. Please don't walk out like that."
"I'm sorry. I got heated up."

She walks closer, a spoon in hand, lightly hitting his head with it.
"Ow"
"Don't do it anymore, okay?"
"Alright."
"I know you're strong. I don't doubt you're capable. But don't you think enough people have died?"

She's absolutely right. Yes. Enough people have died. What if he left and the goblins raided from a different direction? They would've been slaughtered and he would've been powerless to stop it.
(I would've hated myself so much if that happened.)

He bows.
"I'll do better from now on."
"Good! I'm glad we talked this out."
"Is Chloe asleep?"
"Yeah she's in bed. You might want to apology to her too next morning."
"Right.."

He begins to walk toward his room.
"How did it go?"
"Most goblins have been taken care of. A handful of them are left, you guys should be fine."
"I'm glad to hear. Goodnight Saito."
"Goodnight... I'm sorry. I don't think I've ever had your name."

She laughs.
"You're right. I'm Via."
"Goodnight Via."
"Goodnight."

He quietly head to his room and softly closes the door.
The bed feels so divine right now...
