Chapter 18:
HACK TO LOVE
The victory horn echoed through the auditorium, a sound that seemed to physically shake Anya out of her trance. Confetti cannons erupted, showering the stage in glittering paper that caught the flashing lights. The crowd was on its feet, a roar of applause and cheers washing over the competitors' stations. On the giant screen, the name ZERO was emblazoned in triumphant, golden letters.
But Anya couldn't move. She sat frozen in her chair, a ghost at the victory celebration. The world had tilted on its axis, and she was struggling to find her balance. Her mind was a chaotic loop of images: a tiny ASCII rocket ship, a kind smile in the library, a soft grey hoodie, and a screen full of animated cats. The boy she had a crush on, and the rival she despised, were the same person. The two currents of her life had crossed, and the resulting short-circuit had fried her brain.
A spotlight swept across the stage, finally landing on the winner’s station. The announcer's voice boomed, filled with energy. "Let's have a huge round of applause for our new National Cyber Warfare Champion, the incredible, the unstoppable... Zero!"
Anya forced herself to look. Four seats down, Sameer flinched as the spotlight hit him, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. He was blinking against the sudden brightness, his shoulders hunched. He looked deeply uncomfortable, not triumphant. The event staff was trying to guide him towards the stage to receive his trophy, but he was already shaking his head, quietly gathering his things. He logged out of the system, coiled his keyboard cable with neat, precise movements, and slipped his laptop into his bag. He gave a short, awkward nod to the staff member, mumbled something she couldn't hear, and then, with his head down, he slipped away through a side exit, vanishing before the applause had even started to fade. He didn't want the spotlight. He just wanted the win.
He was gone. Just like that. The champion had left the building without so much as a wave.
The sight of his quiet escape was somehow more devastating than any victory dance would have been. It was so perfectly Sameer. Quiet. Efficient. Unassuming. And it confirmed everything.
Anya finally took a breath, and it felt like inhaling broken glass. She looked down at her own hands, which were still resting on her keyboard. Then she looked at the hoodie she was wearing. His hoodie. The warmth she had cherished just an hour ago now felt suffocating, a heavy blanket of irony and betrayal. She had to get it off. She had to get out of there.
With jerky, robotic movements, she began to pack her own things. Her hands felt clumsy, disconnected from her body. She shut down her laptop, the screen going black on her failure. Each item she put in her bag felt impossibly heavy.
"Anya! Anya, are you okay?"
Maya was suddenly there, her face a mask of concern. She had fought her way through the dispersing crowd to get to the stage.
Maya: "What happened? You just stopped! You had him! I thought your system crashed."
Anya looked up at her best friend, her eyes wide and vacant. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. How could she possibly explain it? How could she say, 'The reason I lost is because I found out the boy whose hoodie I'm wearing is the same person who just beat me?'
Anya: (her voice a raw whisper) "I... I can't."
Maya: "Hey, it's okay," Maya said, her voice softening as she saw the genuine shock on Anya's face. This was more than just losing. "Don't worry about the competition. It's just a game. You're still the best hacker I know."
Anya shook her head, a single, humorless laugh escaping her lips. "No," she said, the words finally coming out, thick with a dawning, horrifying clarity. "No, I'm not."
She zipped up her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and walked away from the stage, leaving the flashing lights, the confetti-strewn floor, and the ghost of her victory behind. Maya followed close behind, her mind racing, trying to understand what could have possibly shaken her unflappable friend this badly. Anya wasn't just disappointed. She was completely and utterly blown away.
