Chapter 4:
The one who brings smiles in another world
“So, you can do other things with your mana?”
"I’m doing some experiments with the density so I can do more spells.”
“Technically, the things you do cannot be called that.”
My routine during the last three days became something that I wasn’t expecting. I spend most of the day doing and preparing shows, but after those shows I spend the rest of the day with Cloe. That’s how I learned that her family is the most important in the distribution of paper and fabric (That explains her good clothes). Apparently that combined with their relationships and some good decisions resulted in them being one of the richest families in the kingdom. I would ask more questions so I could explain everything better, but I get easily lost with those topics, so I only retained the important details. I prefer to use my memory to learn new tricks.
“How did you get the ideas for your shows?”
“Well…I’m really creative, also I read a lot.”
“Do you have money for books?”
“...Wanna see my newest routine?”
“Sure!”
She always tries to learn my style, but she’s also happy only watching me. I even show her some of my comic routines before doing them in public, that way I have someone to know which ideas are funny.
“You should do your shows in other places. You'll only get a few coins if you stay there.”
“I already tried to do it in front of the shops frequented by nobles, but I was expelled.”
“That’s so rude.”
“Right? They don’t deserve my art.”
Even when I was against the idea of being with her, It’s very fun having someone to talk about literally anything. I guess humans really are social animals.
“Do you have some goal with all that money?”
“Not really, I just want to have a good future.”
“I see.”
“You know? I could ask some questions too.”
“Like what?”
“I also know a little bit about magic. Do you have any specialization or do you only know basic magic?”
“Hehe, I don’t want to brag, but my education about magic is one of the best, I could even rivalize with people older than me.”
“The things money can do.”
“I make an effort too!”
“Okay, show me your efforts.”
“All right, be prepared.”
Cloe extended her arms and after two seconds, a green ball came out of her hands and hit the ground.
“A basic attack?”
“Wait for it.”
Suddenly, the ground turned greener and greener, and many flowers appeared in the area where the green ball touched. I admit, it was impressive.
“Woah! What is that magic?”
“Life growing magic.”
“How can I learn it?”
“It requires a good understanding of advanced earth and light magic. Do you know any of those?”
“Well…I know basic magic.”
“Then you can’t make it.”
For a second, I thought I could do the same thing I did when I created nitrogen, but I could only do it because I know what nitrogen is and have an idea of where it comes from. Creating life is something without a process or origin that I could visualize from my previous world. I could try to simulate the growth of a plant, but in no way could it compare to what it could do. I guess I can't do anything that's impossible to replicate with science. My chemistry knowledge isn't the best either, so I'm more limited than I initially thought.
“How did you learn it?”
“Mostly thanks to my teacher, but we also have a lot of books about magic.”
“Can I borrow one?”
“If you only understand basic magic, those books will be useless. You need to understand what you're reading.”
“I know, I just wanna see how many of those spells I can replicate with my own methods.”
“You are very stubborn.”
“You threatened me to be my friend, you have no right to call me stubborn.”
“Well! I think it'll be impossible to get you those books. They're too expensive, so I can only lend them to those my family thinks are worth it.”
“I see…”
With my plans completely ruined, I started playing with my mana, trying to cheer myself up. Chloe noticed how devastated I was and tried to cheer me up.
“You know? People that study in magic academies can get some good books for free.”
“...Really?!”
“Yeah. I know about distribution, you can trust my words.”
“How can I get in there now?”
“Not so fast. There’s a minimum age.”
“How many? Eight?”
“What kind of academy accepts people with that age…? You can join when you turn fifteen.”
"...Maybe I can find a spell to increase my age…”
"Do you wanna die early? Also, if you can’t join with your magic talent you must pay a huge amount of money.”
"I see.”
That didn't discourage me. Now I have a reason to make more money!
"What do you think I need to practice before being in there?”
"That was quick... Well, maybe offensive spells, that's really basic for literally everyone.”
"Offensive spells?”
"Yeah. The most basic ones are fire balls, but maybe you can do something better.”
"I see…All right!”
With a great idea in mind, I walked away from Cloe and covered my body with mana trying to emulate an armor.
"Attack me!”
"Huh?”
"I can’t learn that kind of magic without knowing my limits. Also, I wanna see if my body has another weird property.”
I know I have a lot of mana, but I needed to know what else I got. Maybe I have some kind of magic resistance or even a great regeneration.
"Are you sure?”
"I’m protecting my body.”
"Okay…”
Cloe closed her eyes and started to materialize a tiny fireball. If she’s really good with magic then she must know how to shoot a non-lethal projectile, so I was safe.
"Fire ball!”
"Great…Wait.”
I got scared when I noticed the fire ball was going directly to my face. Without enough time to move away, I created strings with mana and tried to reflect the ball.
"Gah!”
Even when the fire ball didn’t stop, I managed to slow it down, only receiving what would be the equivalent to being hit with a soccer ball. The impact made me fall to the ground, but in general, I was okay.
"Ugh…”
"Are you okay?!”
"Yeah…”
My face hurt a lot, but at least I didn’t end up with a burn and I was able to get up. Still, I wasn’t happy.
"Why did you do that?!”
"Huh?! You told me to do it!”
"I was talking about my torso! How am I supposed to protect my face without suffocating myself?!”
"And how am I supposed to know that?!”
“You are the expert in magic!”
“I only fight against mannequins!”
“But not attacking the face must be obvious!”
“Why do you care that much about your face?! You never show it!”
Our childish argument dragged on for a while, but came to nothing. After ten minutes of practically the same thing, we ran out of energy from shouting and collapsed together on the floor.
“...At least I know I’m not immune to magic…”
“That’s a shame. It would be cool having a friend with that power.”
“We can try other things. I must have something more than this mana.”
“Right! Let’s do it now!”
“...You know? I wouldn’t bother if you heal me with some kind of healing magic.”
“Oh, right.”
Maybe I don’t know some things about this new world, maybe I need to change my attitude about some things. But, I know when I turn fifteen, I will be ready for everything this new life will throw at me. I’m gonna be ready.
