Chapter 17:
Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?
To the audience of his home world, people are going crazy. The strongest hero they've seen to date finally fighting his nemesis. The final boss battle. His name goes viral, the stream goes viral. Clips and video are displayed everywhere. Others made many memes out of him for their amusement. But it's gone viral enough that the news of Japan now mention him. People have accepted this as real. It's not fiction. Their eyes are now turned to their screens, locked in to witness his final battle.
A moment of silence passes. Both opponents staring each other down, ready to make the first move. Saito's breathing is much more erratic than the murderer's, fear palpable.
"You came here alone, yet you fear me. How brave of you. Choosing to die alone."
"Shut it."
He smiles. His acceleration speed is insane. Leaping in, without requiring magic nor skills, he closes the distance like it wasn't even there to begin with. He slides his foot back, parrying the first dagger strike aiming for his neck. Saito then jumps sideways, moving out of the way of a counter strike.
The assassin is dual wielding, but his physical strength feels lacking. He can overpower him.
His free hand reaches down his belt, pulling out a dagger of his own. Killer gives in to the chase, striking at him again. They both exchange a couple blows, our protagonist on the defensive.
The murderer's strikes constantly targeting his vital areas, single kill blows or spots meant to incapacitate someone. His movement, his thrusts, his counters. All of it is incredibly efficient. There's no energy wasted. (I can tell this dude has fought way more people off-screen.)
The fight begins to drag on, clashing and exchanging many blows. But at no point does the murderer ever seem serious. Laughing and giggling the entire time, as if enjoying a game.
His attacks are difficult to read. But the more we fight, the better I'm getting at reading his movements. I'm getting used to it.
The moment he thinks he's getting a grasp on how he's fighting, Killer's body stance changes up.
A memory suddenly hits him, remember this skill. Instead of turning around, he jumps back, striking his elbow backward as Killer teleport behind him. His elbow directly in his face, the man flinches. Panther form. Strengthen. Buffing himself, he swings around, aiming for the head. Despite the stun, the mercenary reacts to his movements, swinging his dagger back at his.
As he does so, he activates another one of his skill meant to repel blades when coming in contact with other blades. Saito casts "Impact" in response, creating an explosion that throws his footing off. Saito leaps at him, going all him, thrusting his blade at his chest. The murderer's eyes widen. Realising he indeed is about to be killed. The sword pierces through his skin. Using yet another ability that our hero hasn't seen before, he teleports backward, avoiding a second blast directly within his body.
"Hah. Hahahaha. Oh this is wonderful. This is great. Finally. Finally! Someone putting up a fight. You must be proud of yourself. Congrats!"
His ring glows, immediately patching the wound.
(I missed my chance.)
"Was I going too easy on you? Are you telling me I can actually enjoy myself for once?"
Yep. I screwed up.
"Don't make that face! You know, I appreciate you. I'll let you have fun too."
His smiles widen, twisted. This guy has more than one screw loose.
Great. His fight just got a lot harder now. He's has been on the defensive already.
Giggling, the man leans forward and burst. His speed went up. They begin clashing again. His strengths feels a lot heavier, intending to kill at all cost. At this point, his training doesn't cut it anymore. Saito can't read his movements anymore. His adrenaline spikes, improving his reaction time. That's the only reason why he can still manage. Getting pushed back, relying on instinct, guts and pure reflexes to ward off the attacks, our hero begins to sweat, his breathing becoming heavier. This is tiring. If that was all there was, he might've managed something. But ontop of his overwhelming speed, he begins to use his skills aggressively. Chaining them one after another, circling around the tired young man.
"ARE YOU HAVING FUN?"
No I'm not. Sure enough, his defences begin to fail. His ribs gets slashed, his dagger cutting through some of his armour, making him bleed. The survivor receives a stab right below his shoulder, piercing his skin, beginning to bleed. (I can't keep up.)
This savage exchange of blows goes on for up to a minute. He's losing ground, receiving more and more injuries. He's losing. The man giggles, happy with him.
(I want to wipe his annoying smile off his face.)
(Spike.)
As the assassins steps forward, so does Saito. From his foot rises a fairly large blast, shoving Killer up the sky. He then focuses on his claw, growing it in size, extending it, catching him.
With a loud determined scream, Saito turns around, extending his arm furthermore, slamming his target through several buildings, collapsing them as he shoves his opponent through numerous walls, shattered against his body.
IMPACT.
The claw holding him then explodes loudly, echoing over a large radius. Panting, the young man, fighting for his life, puts his knee down. He's getting exhausted already. He won't last long enough to handle two more rounds of this. (I'm not giving up. I'll go until my dying breath. I'll fight until nothing of me remains. All these fights I've had. Every fights for survival I've had led me to this very moment. YOU THINK I'LL LET ALL OF THAT GO TO WASTE?)
Back in his menu, the hidden rainbow passive begins to glow.
The requisite has been reached.
Passive: Strength of will.
The stronger the user's will, the stronger he becomes.
A laugh echoes from the ruins. His nemesis comes out of the smoke, amused, uninjured. His ring lost yet another charge. One left.
"That's good! That's great! You bring tears to my eyes. Please, tell me your name. I want to cherish this memory. I want to remember you. I've never had such fun before. Please... Your name."
Shut the hell up. You're not getting anything from me. Not now, not ever.
"Tiger form."
A more mana dense form takes over him, replacing his panther form.
Much more powerful, however much more energy consuming.
He can't fight for long anymore. He has to finish this in the next 5 minutes, or he'll run out of energy. His claws grows bigger. The mana shaping itself around his body roughly takes the shape of a large tiger.
"Woah! It grew bigger! Do you think you can win now?"
We'll see.
Sheathing his blades, now entirely relying in his massive claws, Saito burst toward him with great speeds, closing the gap. The man smiles, leaping aside, dodging the claw coming down at him. The moment the claw collides with the floor beneath, an explosion goes off, destroying its immediate surroundings.
"Wow! That's so cool! What else you got?"
Ignoring his provocations, holding nothing back, the desperate protagonist gives him chase, striking at him as the man keeps moving around, dodging and evading his attacks.
The murderer bends his eyes, thinking.
(Is it me or he's getting faster.)
The more time goes on, the more desperate and forward Saito becomes. His will to live only growing stronger, directly increasing his strength due to his unlocked rainbow skill.
At first, Killer found this entertaining. Ooh, big cat chasing him down. But the stronger Saito became, the more anxiety began to dwell inside him.
(That's not normal.)
Using immeasurable strength, Saito burst toward him at speeds never seen before, forcing him to use a skill to teleport out of the way. The tiger breaches through one of the buildings, coming out on the other side, unhurt, ready to rush him again.
"I think I'll see this cat in a bit then."
The murderer isn't laughing anymore. This isn't funny anymore. He runs for the forest, trying to find a place to conceal himself. The protagonist, driven by rage, despair and adrenaline, wrecks havoc in the wood, demolishing everything in its path to reach him. The man's amusement has been replaced with fear. THIS ISN'T NORMAL. What is happening?
And then suddenly. The sounds stop.
The crazed man turns around, trying to find where his target went.
It's like he just vanished.
In Saito's mind, his thoughts return to something he heard before.
The more vividly you can imagine something, the stronger the spell will be.
I'd never forget. The terror it embedded into me. How fast it was. How powerful it was tearing all of these numbers apart.
I bestow this memory upon you.
Quickly turning around trying to locate his foe, Killer hears the sound of a branch cracking.
From the shadows, a dark fur appears beneath the moon's light. The glowing eyes of a creature he's never seen before, coming out of nowhere. Using his thoughts and memories, Saito's form changed to resemble the one of the werewolf that so heavily terrorised him, borrowing its strength.
Moving much faster than the murderer anticipated, the beast strikes its claw at his chest, shredding his clothes, leaving a critical wound, flinging him through the trees.
Now scared, Killer quickly gets up and uses his skill to accelerate, sprinting as fast as he can toward town. (Coming here backfired. I have to get out.)
He glances back, the monster chasing him, catching up to him.
"HOW FAST CAN YOU GET? WHEN DID YOU GET THAT STRONG?"
Saito reaches him once more, his mind blanking out. Getting one final chance, he strikes down at Killer with killing intent. The man screams and turns around to block it. A massive impact ensues, followed by a tremendous explosion. The blast shreds the assassins clothes to pieces, shredding his skin as well, dealing critical damage. He gets flung over a massive distance, flipping onto himself, landing inside a house through a wall. As soon as the wall collapses, the house falls, crushing him underneath. Exhausted, out of strength, Saito's form goes away. He falls to his knees, panting, choking, struggling to breath. His vision his blurry. He can taste blood into his mouth.
(It's not over. Until I see his dead body, the fight is still on.)
He reaches down his small bag, pulling out water and a ration, trying to shove it down his mouth. Trying to eat too fast after all this, he chokes and puts, yet drinks and eats right away regardless.
In order to live, he needs the energy. He needs anything he can get.
His body feels heavy. Like he's about to lose consciousness. Struggling to stay up, he stares intensity at the building that crumbled.
(Don't get out. Please get out.)
His heart sank as he noticed debris getting shoved aside, a silhouette standing up.
First, silence. And then giggles. His laughter grows louder until he's laughing out loud.
"YOU! YOU ALMOST KILLED ME! YOU'RE GREAT! I LOVE YOU! AGAIN. AGAIN! I HAVEN'T FELT LIKE THIS IN A LOOOONG TIME."
His eyes widen, full of despair.
He lost. He can't fight anymore. He got nothing. It's over.
"You can keep going.. Right? We're just getting started right? Show me. You can do more right? Let's have fun."
As the murderer lifts his hand, a metallic sound echoes. Curious, he looks down at his hand. His ring cracked. With no charges left, his artefact falls apart, breaking into pieces, dropping onto the floor. "..Huh?"
(My ring broke? What happened? I've used it? I've gotten close to dying this many times?)
Helpless, Saito can't help but watch as his nemesis's face changes of expression. From amusement to confusion. And then to anger.
(I'm losing?).
No. I'm not losing. I can't be losing. I'm doing this for a reason.
His mind races back to how it started. How his family got kidnapped.
"If you want them back, you'll kill a hundred people for me."
He didn't believe him. He fought. He tried his damn hardest. But the man crushed him.
Powerful, he had no choice but to obey in hopes of having his family returned.
Killing so many people scars the mind. This twisted mind of his is how he copes.
He convinced himself to see this as a game. But now that his life is truly on the line, this line of thinking doesn't work anymore. With a very straight, serious face, the man stares straight into Saito's eyes.
"Sorry for dragging it on. I'll be killing you now."
"No, wait."
Killer stops as he was about to go forward.
The protagonist resume talking.
"Someone hired you for this. I know that. You've seen how well I handled myself against 3 of your lives. It doesn't have to be this way. Why are you fighting for him? If we gang up on him, we have a chance. Please, think this through."
His word seems to resonate through him. But rather than having the intended effect, veins begins to appear on his forehead. The man removes his cloak. Short brown hair and black eyes.
"YOU THINK I HAVEN'T TRIED? YOU THINK I'D BE DOING THIS IF I THOUGHT I HAD A CHANCE?"
Oh. Taken aback by his sudden emotions, Saito goes silent.
It's like he's a completely different person.
No, I have to talk now.
"You're a lot stronger than you were before, there's no doubt about it. This is how strong I am after one week of training. Give me a couple more days. We can do this, I give you my word."
Killer hesitates. His fist clenches his dagger firmly.
"There's no guarantee your family is even alive-"
"I KNOW THAT."
I went too far.
"I'll take the chance. There's no killing him. I'm almost up to a hundred. I'll be done soon."
No. Please. I can't fight anymore. Don't fight me.
"Killer please, listen t-"
"I'll kill you now."
Oh.
There goes my chance.
"Before you kill me. I'm Saito. What's your name?"
"Yeris."
Yeris takes a different stance. His body glows for a short moment.
I've never seen that skill.
The murderer then bursts forward, then sideways. His speed accelerates to a point where the dying young man has no idea of where he's at. The back of his neck suddenly gets sliced. His chests gets pierced. The back of his leg gets cut. His wrist receive a several wound. His hand goes limb. He doesn't feel it anymore. Circling around him at insane speeds, he comes back and forth. Slashing him, cutting him to pieces. Over and over and over. Blood lashes out onto the floor.
Yeris is being cautious. He's not taking risks anymore, trying to wear him down until he's incapable of even standing up. The whirlwind of slashes goes on. Another cut on his neck, blood lashing out.
The back of his knee gets shredded, forcing him to kneel.
The dagger then begins to glow of a deep red colour as he dashes forward, slicing through one of Saito's eyes, losing his left eye. The moment the glowing dagger touches the skin, it scars, for it may never be healed. His dagger digs through his thigh's armour. Killer cuts through his belt. It falls to the floor with a quiet noise.
I'm dying. I'm being torn apart.
He's probably waiting to be absolutely sure he can't defend himself before dealing the finishing blow. I have to wait for that very moment.
He closes his eyes. His final spell.
Control.
Allows the user to use mana to control his own body through his will.
His body collapses under its own weight. He can't feel his body anymore.
Seeing his foe's body fall, Yeris's stance changes, triggering his skill, teleporting behind him.
(SPIKE!!)
An explosion beneath him goes off, blasting the assassin off the ground. Using control to manipulate his body rather than trying to move it normally, he's capable of moving his limbs regardless of injury.
(TIGER FORM. STRENGTHEN. BERSERK)
Forcing his body to turn around in an usual speed, he strikes forward, his claw hitting the murderer with immense strength, sending him flying at the distance, crashing into a keep's wall.
Saito closes in the distance in a frenzy, his face distorted with pain, terror and stubbornness.
Using control, he strikes his foe against the wall, crushing him in-between his claws and the wall. Over and over and over as every single blows creates a small explosion that tears him apart.
In both of their minds, a single thought.
(I don't want to die!)
Saito screams his heart out in an all-out assault, pouring everything he's got into this.
(UNTIL MY MIND GIVES UP, I'LL KEEP FIGHTING!)
Killer's face distorts itself from terror.
I'm not ready to die. I don't want to die.
I have a family waiting for me. I must save them.
In a final moment of inspiration, he remembers. His ace.
His second ring.
He screams, activating it. The ring breaks, unleashing multiple powerful wind slashes that cuts off his left leg, his right arm and deeply cuts through his neck, beheading him.
It lasts less than half a second. Yet, this felt like an eternity.
I'll die soon. I did my best. I tried my hardest. But it wasn't enough.
I won't see my family, my friends nor any of the villagers that cared so much for him.
I knew I wouldn't live. But I wanted to kill you. I wanted to win.
It's okay.
We can both lose.
Even if I have to destroy my body. Burn my flesh. CRUSH MY BONES OR SHRED MY SOUL.
EVEN IF IT'S THE VERY LAST THING I DO.
I WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING I HAVE.
YOU CAN HAVE ALL OF IT.
I'M BRINGING YOU WITH ME.
With control still active, it doesn't matter if he's beheaded.
His spell is mind driven.
A single word comes to mind. A single wish for his body as his view flips backward.
Forward.
His passive skill driven by his will illuminates, reaching its peak.
The mana surrounding goes body, within a mere millisecond, goes ablaze going from a clear blue to a deep red. The body accelerates, going onward with devastating strength, crashing against the living man. The pressure is enough to break bones and crush his organs as the thick wall behind them collapses from the pressure.
Impact.
Following his last command, the entire body suddenly flares up.
The brown haired man's final sight. A deep white flash.
An explosion worthy of a modern small bomb goes off, destroying many of the houses in vicinity, creating a massive explosion that goes through great distances.
Those at the village look at the distance. The sound reached them. Smoke can be seen in the sky.
They look up, worried.
Yeris has died.
Saito has died.
