Chapter 7:
The one who brings smiles in another world
“So this is the place…”
In front of me was a colossal building that I was able to see only if I moved various meters back. This is totally what I was waiting for, and it was really difficult to get here.
As I left home, I thought about asking Cloe for a ride, but I didn't like the idea of sharing transportation with her, so my only option was to sneak into carriages until the road was short enough to walk. And my efforts were finally rewarded.
“The entrance should be in here.”
I approached a giant door guarded by five guards, clearly prepared for anything. Upon seeing me, one of them picked up a book and began flipping through the pages.
“Name and number?”
“Thomas Creiter. I think my number is seventy-one.”
“Hmm…”
The guardian with the book probably looked at the page of the students with the number seventy until he found my name.
“Here it is. You're in the regular classes and you should go to room 104.”
“Thanks.”
“...”
“Oh, yeah.”
Before entering I let them inspect my suitcases. Meanwhile I stretched more relaxed now that I know that I’m in the regular classes.
Maybe I should have explained this earlier, but everyone who wanted to enter the academy took an exam. Those who had already paid the tuition did so only to find out whether they would get into the regular or advanced classes, so for Cloe and me, it was just a stepping stone. I studied for all the exams, but I was scared of the possibility of ending up in the same class as Cloe, or worse, in the same classroom. Luckily, my results on the magic exams were very low, so my chances of getting into the regular classes were very high. On the other hand, Cloe's results were exceptional, finishing tenth in the class with the highest grades.
“All right, everything is okay.”
“Great.”
“But we’re gonna put you on a possible risk list for having those boxes.”
“I promise I will only use them to assist my magic.”
“You better.”
After receiving the key to my room, I headed there, with the guards giving me rather negative looks. Given the number, it would be logical to assume it was on the second floor.
“I want to rest for a while…”
The classes are supposed to start in two days, so I wanted to rest a little during those days. This will be my first time in years without doing a performance, so I must relax as much as I can.
“101…102…103…There it is.”
I tried to use the key to open the door, but it was already open.
“So my roommate is already here.”
As everyone deduced thanks to my previous dialogues, in this academy we have roommates. Usually it must be someone with the same gender and class so we don’t cause problems to each other, but during my matriculation I heard about some rare cases where they put two persons with different genders or from different classes due to problems related to other rooms, so this was like a roulette.
“Hello?”
“Huh…”
A man with black hair looked at me the moment I put my feet on the room. His hair was relatively long and silky, and his eyes had a curious indigo color. His clothes weren’t something remarkable because he was simply using the male uniform. Right then he was writing using a cupboard as a desk even when we had an actual desk.
“Umm…”
“I’m Thomas, nice to meet you.”
“...”
“I’m gonna sleep for a while, you have a problem with that?”
“No…”
“Thanks.”
“...I already took the down bunk…”
“Okay.”
Finally, I climbed to my bed and enjoyed sleeping while I heard my roommate writing something.
I slept very well for five hours, but the sensation of falling suddenly woke me up. I was fast enough to reach my bed with mana ropes, avoiding the floor. That wasn't my best way to wake up.
“He’s not here…?”
I looked around, but my roommate wasn’t in any place. I guess I’m not gonna know his name for a while.
“I should organize my things already.”
After cutting off the mana rope, I opened my suitcases and started putting everything in good places.
“The boxes will go under the desk, my props can be put on the bed…my clothes are a little difficult…”
The only cupboard in the room was the one my roommate used as a desk, so I opened it, trying not to mix my clothes with his. Since he didn't have many, I was able to neatly separate everything and fold his clothes so everything looked neater and more organized.
“Great, now...”
I was planning to leave, but then I realized the paper he was writing on was still there.
“...I shouldn’t…But…”
I know it's wrong to look at other people's stuff, but my curiosity defeated my reason, so I looked at what he was writing. And it was some kind of musical sheet.
“Hmm…I think this is for a violin.”
The sheet had some indications that made it obvious that it was made for a violin, and the symbols weren’t different from the ones used in my previous world, so I was able to recognize what he was trying to do.
“...I can do this.”
With my strings I tried to replicate how it should sound. When I worked in Infinity Wonderland one of the things I did was learning about music just to help in some areas that required a musician. Still, my strings weren’t the best to replicate the sound of a violin. I heard something, but it was barely audible.
“It must be a popular song in this world.”
I brought the paper up to my face to see any additional details I hadn't noticed before. Although I couldn't find anything in particular, when the sun hit it, I noticed there was writing on the back.
“Will it be the next part of the song?”
When I was about to see what was in the back, I heard the door opening and chewing sounds.
“At least I got some brea-.”
I looked back and it was my roommate who came in. He dropped the bread he was eating when he saw that I was reading that paper.
“Huh, sorry, I just-.”
The guy quickly approached and took the paper in a very aggressive way.
“...How much did you see?”
“Well, I saw a musical sheet.”
“...Only that…?”
“Yeah, I was about to read the back.”
“...Please, don’t do that…”
“...All right.”
“...”
I wanted to ask what song was that, but the best was not trying to push him even more. He already seemed very stressed.
“Your clothes are in the left part of the cupboard.”
“...Thanks…”
Maybe he wanted to be alone, so I left the room, not without saying a last thing.
“That was a beautiful song, when you feel better, I’d like you to tell me the name.”
“...”
I decided to use the rest of the day learning about the place so I wouldn’t get lost in the future. I’d like to say that it was funny and easy, but I was a little paranoid because Cloe could be in the place, so I didn’t do too much before going back to my room.
My academic life started very well…Or whatever can be considered like a good start.
