Chapter 19:
Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?
The villagers rush in the ghost town. The moment they saw the giant explosion, they took arms and ran over.
"Over there!"
A massive crater is left where the explosion went off. Smoke is still rising up, parts of several buildings up in flame. The group of men approaches it, covering their noses, trying to breath.
Trevor tosses someone aside, eager.
"Let me see."
Looking down at the huge crater, he notices Saito.
His clothes are gone, leaving nothing but his torn pants. The armour he was wearing is gone, broken in pieces.
"He's down there!"
As the men began their descent, one of them hears footsteps approaching.
"Huh?
He didn't have time to react. A figure, fully cloaked, was already onto him. His knife too swift to see, his head drops, his body slumping down the door.
"KERT DIED"
Everyone's attention turns to the man as he beheads a second one.
The men scream in fear, readying their weapons, terrified.
He's too fast for their eyes to keep up.
Trevor looks over, but a shadow covers his view. T
The man, now directly in front of him, lunges his dagger directly at Trevor's head.
A second warrior, coming from nowhere, deflects the strike, staggering the second assassin.
The aggressor teleports, appearing further back.
In shock, the blacksmith looks at the man who just saved his life.
Someone he hasn't seen in a year.
"Krist?"
"Dad, take cover. We'll handle him."
A large group of military man riding horses arrive in vicinity, quickly hopping off their horses, readying their swords and shields.
"GLARION MILITARY. YOU'RE UNDER ARREST FOR MURDER AND ASSAULT."
His troops consist of 24 men. 20 soldiers, one medic, one leader, one scout and their champion.
Normally it consists of 23 members. But whenever an emergency comes up, a champion is also dispatched to fend off foes. There's 8 of them in total in the entire Kingdom. Their strength is amongst the best. Krist as the leader, his hair blond and eyes blue like his mother, similar to Chloe.
The champion, namely Uriak, rushes in, his long sword raised. His hair of red colour, bearing orange eyes. Apart from them, those within their ranks more or less resemble each other.
God's subordinate looks around. He sighs, more bothered than anything else.
(Now I'll have to kill all of them. But first.)
His eyes immediately goes to Saito's body. If he survived his lackey, then he's a threat. Without a doubt, he levelled up a lot from this single encounter.
The medic slides down the crater, heading to Saito.
Noticing the medic rush to his fainted target, he fakes rushing Trevor, pulling Krist in the wrong direction. He then activates a skill, bypassing both of them, speeding down the crater.
Uriak: "JEFFREY, WATCH OUT!"
(Huh?)
His eyes look up, noticing the criminal dashing down toward him. His attention doesn't to be focused on himself, but rather the body on the ground.
(I have to protect him!)
He leans in, unsheathing sword. But before he even has time to pull it out, the foe thrusts down at Saito's chest. Acting purely out of reflex, Jeff shoves his free arm in the way, the dagger piercing through his forearm, barely shielding Saito from immediate death. With a scream, he swings his sword of his right arm at the shadowy figure, slowing him down just enough for Uriak close in the gap, swiping at him. The man jumps higher up, avoiding the attacking.
Krist runs around the crater, catching him to him. They rapidly exchange blows as the champion makes his way up.
Moaning in pain as the men run over to fight the foe, Jeff quickly pulls his bandages, patching up his wound. His eyes then move onto Saito's. He freezes, surprised. The man is look back up at him.
Saito has woken up.
The men rush over, screaming commands in orders, going to surround the criminal.
Much stronger than anticipated, the formidable foe swiftly moves around, countering multiple attacks at once. The moment the soldiers close in, he suddenly changes direction, mixing himself with the crowd, killing them one after the other.
Krist: "BACK OFF, LEAVE HIM TO US."
The soldiers rapidly give up on their attack, realising he's way above their league.
The assassin, blade at hand, glances at Saito again, only to realise he's missing.
(Did they drag him away?)
Feeling danger, he burst sideways to safety, avoiding our protagonist falling from the sky, his body enhanced with mana of a pure red colour. The floor cracks and completely breaks beneath him.
Surprised, everyone's attention turn to him. Not only did nobody expect him to suddenly come back, but the red aura now surrounding his body seems to shock everyone. Red mana is known as a myth. A legend. Something people heard of, couldn't prove. Records of it exist, but that's all.
It is said that red mana only manifests itself to the strongest of wills. To the unbend-able mind.
God's subordinate gives him a weird look.
(He's been here since a week. And he's already got this kind of ability. I have to kill him right now.)
Uriak and Krist move closer to Saito.
Krist: "We got your back."
Uriak: "That's Velres. He's a notorious criminal tied to the murder of over a hundred people. Don't hold anything back."
Velres. Yeah. I'll make sure to kill you myself.
The initial surprise gone, conflict resumes itself. The soldiers quickly rush over, pushing the villagers away, forcing them to escape. The others go down the crater to pull Jeffrey out.
Meanwhile, Uriak, Saito, Velres and Krist begin a deadly battle, three against one.
Despite their advantage in numbers, nobody has the advantage. They're struggling to keep up.
Krist and Uriak's teamwork shows. Helping each other, protecting each other. Where one lacks, the other steps in. Something Saito isn't very much used to do. Since the very beginning, he's been fighting alone, whether it was against a single opponent or a crowd. His devastating blow is helping, pushing the assassin to move away occasionally. One good exploding strike could probably break his body. This dance goes on for quite a bit. During the fight, a feint glow picks his attention. A ring. The same one the man he fought moments earlier had.
(This one can also heal from all injuries. This is bad. Really bad.)
If they're evenly tied on a 3v1, the moment one of them falls, the tide will change. This man is much stronger than his predecessor.
The very second they break apart, Saito clears his voice, speaking clearly enough for them to hear him.
"He had a ring that will completely all his wounds up to three times."
Uriak: "Okay. That'll be challenging."
"I have an idea. Just distract him, please."
Krist: "On it."
His mind goes back to his final thought. When he gave his final command "forward", he felt his body travel at incredible speeds. With this power, if he can close the gap fast enough, maybe he can cut off his hand. It's worth a shot.
The leader and the champion take the spotlight, fighting the dangerous man.
They're struggling to keep him at bay, forced to rely on their skills, simultaneously chaining them to keep the main his toes. Saito leans forward, buffing his body using all the spells he's got available that does exactly that. Purely relying on his claws, he leans forward, ready to pounce at the first opportunity. Sure enough, Uriak creates that opportunity of him. His blades suddenly glows bright. As it collides against his opponent's, it lashes out, creating a shockwave that staggers Velres for but a moment. But that's all he needs.
Using the utmost of his strength, it feels like his very bones are breaking apart from the pressure.
Despite how strong he was now, the overwhelming strength of this mana was too much for his body to take. His bones begin to crack from the pressure. His mouth begins to bleed. But it's fine.
It is required to win.
Unleashing the spell, he reproduces what he has accomplished before.
"Forward."
With absolute strength, the floor beneath him tears apart, collapsing entirely as he nulls the distance between the fighters. Velres's eyes widen. Even for him, this speed is too much to handle.
Swinging his claw at his left arm, unable to stop himself, the mana pierces through it, pulling the limb off his body in one swift motion. The speed alone generates so much wind that all three standing fighters flinch, struggling at recovering their footing. The criminal's arm in his hands, Saito's landing is brutal. Crashing down the floor, spinning onto himself with uncontrollable speed, landing so far that everyone loses him of sight.
Krist: "IT'S NOW OR NEVER. CHARGE HIM. KILL HIM. THIS IS OUR CHANCE."
The urgency in his voice is felt through everyone's body.
All soldiers immediately rush in as blood pours out of his wounds.
For Velres, it feels like the world has came to a halt.
Everyone surrounding him frozen in time.
The first drops of the incoming rain still before his eyes.
(I've stood for god. I've fought in his service. I've led a devoted life, loyal to god. This is but another test. I am being trial'ed. My strength is doubted. Fear not my Lord. For I will not yield so easily. I will rise above all your expectations, as I've always done.)
He activates his emergency skill; "Unleash". By using the utmost of his body, by honing his senses to their extreme limit, by breaking his body to achieve the impossible. That is the purpose of this skill. An unstoppable force. He must get his ring back.
Uriak moves in his way to prevent him from heading toward Saito, but fails to do see as Velres outspeeds him. Using a skill of his own, Krist blocks his way, striking down at him, forcing the man to block of his remaining arm. The soldiers immediately surround him, rushing in.
Oh, you poor souls. You might as well be standing still.
Cutting through them like butter, with talent never seen before, even with a missing hand, the criminal chains his skill, taking them down one by one. Krist moves in to put a stop to his killing spree. But by combing two different skills, within the time it'd take to blink, he's already passed beyond him, cutting his right arm off, deeply slashing into his neck. The sky grows red as if bleeding. This isn't enough. His killing spree continues, thinning their numbers like it was nothing, his blade invisible to the naked eye as it simply moves too fast to follow. As the last line of defence, Uriak blocks his way again, engaging him.
Oh, but you poor fool. You've already lost. The champion's eyes follows his movements leading right, ready to parry him. But this is nothing but a mirror image. A trick from a different skill.
His final skill used, he pierces Uriak's head from the side, immediately killing him.
He then dashes forth, looking for his arm.
Despite his night vision, he can't see it. He didn't fly off that far from here. Where is Saito?
He looks at the ground ahead. It's cracked, broken. As if it caved in from pressure.
The red sky.
He looks up as Saito drops from the sky, dropping onto him like a meteor.
All his skills in a cooldown, Velres can't do anything but witness the claw break his skill in, completely breaking his body to pieces, at the cost of Saito's arm completely shattering, leaving nothing but pieces of flesh.
