Chapter 16:
Astral Caliber
"We have to find her," Itsuki said, his voice cold with determination as they stood in the ransacked vault. "That teleportation spell leaves traces. I can track them."
"How?" Rina asked, still staring at the spot where Clara had vanished.
Instead of activating his usual debugging vision, Itsuki closed his eyes and reached deeper into his Wraith Lord abilities. Soul energy began to flow around him, dark and ethereal, as he extended his spiritual senses throughout the building.
[SOUL RESONANCE ACTIVATED] [SCANNING FOR LIFE FORCE SIGNATURES] [TARGET: CLARA VAELTHORNE - BLOOD RELATIVE TRACES DETECTED] [LOCATION: DEEP UNDERGROUND - SOUTHWEST WING]
"Found her," Itsuki said, his eyes snapping open. "She's alive, but weak. Deep underground, in a section of the house that shouldn't exist according to the architectural plans."
"Hidden levels," Olivia said grimly. "Many noble houses have secret chambers for... unsavory activities."
They made their way through the blood-soaked halls of Vaelthorne House, following Itsuki's soul-based tracking. The life force trail led them to what appeared to be a dead-end wall in the southwest wing.
"Secret passage," Rina muttered, examining the stonework. "But I don't see any obvious mechanisms..."
"We don't need mechanisms," Itsuki said, pulling out his Cracked Glass Orb. "Everyone grab on."
They phased through the false wall using NO CLIP, emerging into a narrow staircase that descended into darkness. The air grew colder as they went deeper, and the smell of fear and old blood became overwhelming.
The staircase ended at a heavy iron door that stood slightly ajar. Through the gap, they could hear Darius's voice echoing from within.
"...such beautiful hair. I think I'll have you wear it down for the ceremony. Flowing and free, like the maiden you'll pretend to be..."
Itsuki felt rage building in his soul energy, the dark power responding to his protective instincts. He phased through the door alone, leaving the others to follow conventionally.
◇◇◇
The dungeon chamber was exactly as horrific as Itsuki had expected. Clara was chained to the far wall, her dress torn and her face pale with exhaustion. Darius stood over her with a silver brush, stroking her hair with disturbing gentleness.
"Get away from her," Itsuki said, his voice carrying the otherworldly resonance of activated soul magic.
Darius spun around, his eyes widening in surprise before narrowing with calculating anger. "The mysterious level 1. I was wondering when you'd arrive."
"Let her go," Itsuki demanded, soul energy beginning to manifest around his hands as dark flames.
"I think not," Darius replied, drawing a curved sword that gleamed with enchanted steel. "You've interfered with my plans for the last time."
Darius lunged forward with surprising speed, his blade crackling with lightning magic. But to Itsuki, the attack seemed laughably slow.
He animation-cancelled into a Phantom Dash that carried him past the attack and behind his opponent, then immediately frame-cancelled into a Soul Rend that caught Darius completely off-guard.
"Too slow," Itsuki said as dark energy tore across Darius's back, shredding his expensive robes and leaving smoking gouges in his flesh.
Darius stumbled forward, spinning around with rage in his eyes. "Impossible! I've trained for decades—"
His words were cut short as Itsuki dash-cancelled directly through his guard, appearing inches from his face before delivering a devastating Soul Burn point-blank to his chest.
Darius flew backward, crashing into the stone wall so hard that cracks spider-webbed out from the impact point. He tried to regain his footing, but Itsuki was already there, frame-perfect timing making his movements seem instantaneous.
"Spectral Chains!" Ethereal bindings wrapped around Darius's limbs, slamming him back against the wall. But before he could struggle, Itsuki animation-cancelled the binding into a Phantom Dash combo.
SLAM. Itsuki appeared to Darius's left, driving a soul-enhanced fist into his ribs. CRACK. The sound of breaking bones echoed through the dungeon.
SLAM. Right side now, another devastating blow that lifted Darius off his feet.
SLAM. Above, driving him down into the stone floor with such force that the entire chamber shook.
"Stop—" Darius gasped, blood trickling from his mouth.
But Itsuki wasn't finished. He grabbed Darius by the throat, lifted him effortlessly, and hurled him across the room like a ragdoll. The noble crashed through a wooden torture rack, splinters flying everywhere.
Itsuki dash-cancelled across the room and delivered a Soul Rend that sent Darius tumbling end over end.
"You know," Itsuki said casually, animation-cancelling into another devastating soul attack, "if this was a game, you'd actually be a pretty worthy opponent. Good stats, decent gear, interesting moveset."
He grabbed Darius's sword arm and twisted, the sound of dislocating joints making Clara wince despite everything the man had done to her.
"Problem is," Itsuki continued, frame-cancelling into a Phantom Dash combo, "this isn't a game. And you're fighting someone who mastered frame-perfect execution against opponents who could actually challenge me."
Darius tried to activate his lightning magic, but every time electrical energy began to gather around his blade, Itsuki would interrupt the casting with another perfectly-timed strike. His frame-perfect execution made it impossible for Darius to complete any complex spells.
"How?" Darius wheezed, struggling to stand as blood ran down his face. "How are you so fast?"
"Experience," Itsuki replied, animation-cancelling into a Soul Burn that caught Darius mid-sentence. "Thousands of hours fighting people much better than you."
He grabbed Darius by the back of his robes and hurled him into the opposite wall. Before the noble could even hit the stone, Itsuki Phantom Dashed to intercept him, driving a knee into his solar plexus that doubled him over.
"You're pathetic," Itsuki said, delivering a Soul Rend uppercut that launched Darius toward the ceiling. He dash-cancelled upward, caught the falling man, and pile-drove him back into the floor with bone-crushing force.
Darius tried to crawl away, but Itsuki grabbed his ankle and dragged him back. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Please—" Darius started to beg.
Itsuki kicked him in the ribs so hard he skidded across the stone floor, leaving a trail of blood.
Another Phantom Dash. Another devastating soul attack. Darius was barely conscious now, his noble training and magical enhancements completely useless against Itsuki's overwhelming speed and technique.
"I'll kill you for this!" Darius snarled through broken teeth.
"With what?" Itsuki asked, grabbing Darius's sword and snapping the enchanted blade in half with his bare hands. "This piece of junk?"
He tossed the broken weapon aside and hauled Darius to his feet by his shirt front. The once-proud noble was now a battered, bleeding mess, his expensive robes torn and filthy.
"You're nothing," Itsuki said, staring into Darius's terrified eyes. "Just a coward who murders children and thinks fancy clothes make him dangerous."
He delivered one final Soul Decimation point-blank to Darius's chest. Dark energy exploded from the impact, sending the broken man crashing through multiple stone walls before he finally came to rest in a heap of rubble.
The entire fight had lasted less than three minutes, and for most of that time, Darius had simply been getting systematically destroyed.
"Impossible," Darius gasped, trying to push himself up from the debris. "Decades of training... magical enhancements... How could a mere level one..."
But as Itsuki approached to finish the fight, he noticed something wrong with his opponent's movements. Darius was twitching and spasming, but his eyes were still coherent and filled with desperate rage.
"Not... over," Darius gasped, reaching into his robes with a trembling hand. "Not... yet."
He pulled out a small black stone that pulsed with malevolent energy. Demonic runes covered its surface, and the air around it seemed to writhe with shadowy tentacles.
"Darius, no!" Clara shouted from her chains. "Demon stones are forbidden! They'll corrupt your soul permanently!"
"My soul was forfeit the moment I killed the family," Darius snarled, crushing the stone in his grip.
Dark energy erupted from the shattered crystal, pouring into Darius's body and transforming him in horrific ways. His skin turned ashen gray, his eyes became burning red coals, and massive bat-like wings tore through his back in explosions of blood and shadow.
"POWER!" he roared with a voice that echoed with demonic resonance. "FINALLY, TRUE POWER!"
The transformed Darius launched himself upward, his new wings carrying him through the dungeon ceiling as if it were paper. Stone and mortar rained down as he burst through floor after floor, emerging into the night sky above Vaelthorne House.
"CITIZENS OF MERIDIAN!" his amplified voice boomed across the city. "BOW BEFORE YOUR NEW DEMONIC LORD! THOSE WHO RESIST WILL BE CONSUMED!"
◇◇◇
In the destroyed dungeon, Itsuki quickly freed Clara from her chains. She collapsed immediately, her strength completely drained by hours of captivity and terror.
"I've got something for this," Itsuki said, rummaging through his inventory. His fingers closed around a small vial filled with sparkling golden liquid - a Divine Recovery Elixir from some long-forgotten holiday event.
"What is that?" Clara asked weakly.
"Something that shouldn't exist in this world," Itsuki replied, helping her drink the potion. "Event exclusive. Full health and mana restoration, status effect cleansing, temporary stat boost."
The effect was immediate and dramatic. Color returned to Clara's cheeks, her eyes brightened, and she stood up with renewed strength.
"Incredible," she breathed, feeling power flowing through her body. "I feel stronger than I've ever been."
Rina and Olivia arrived through the hole that Darius had torn in the ceiling, rappelling down on Rina's mechanical cables.
"What was that?" Rina demanded. "The entire house shook!"
"Darius consumed a demon stone," Clara explained. "He's transformed into some kind of demonic entity."
They could hear his roars echoing from above, punctuated by explosions and the sounds of destruction as he began his assault on the city.
"We have to stop him," Olivia said grimly. "Demonic corruption spreads. If he's allowed to rampage unchecked, he could transform the entire population into lesser demons."
"How do we fight something like that?" Rina asked.
Itsuki looked at Clara, seeing the determination in her eyes despite everything she'd been through. "Together. All of us."
"This is my family's responsibility," Clara said firmly. "Darius was our problem. I need to be the one to end it."
"Not alone," Itsuki replied. "We'll finish this together."
Clara nodded, magical energy beginning to flow around her hands as the event potion boosted her natural abilities to unprecedented levels.
Above them, Darius's demonic laughter echoed through the night as shadows began spreading across Meridian City like a plague.
