Chapter 37:

So Many Questions

Can the Villain Become a Hero in Another World?

It had taken Rei another full day of rest before she'd recovered enough to make the journey to Dulciena.

Freya seemed to be doing much better. They'd spoken with each other the entire day, she'd stayed to rest.

They'd most talked about loved ones, alive or dead. she'd told Freya about how she'd fallen for Elizabeth and Freya told her about her brother, Edwin.

When this was all over, they'd agreed to meet up and talk again.

She would have liked to stay with Freya longer, but she needed to rescue Elizabeth.

If Maxwell was the hero, he claimed he was, then he was already in Dulciena.

As she made her way back to Dulciena, she stopped at were Elizabeth's cottage once stood. All that remained was a pile of ash and debris.

As she searched through the debris, she saw something that made her heart skip a beat. Nestled under what had been a mattress was a wooden carving of Rei in her yokai form.

Elizabeth must have finished it, the morning she'd been taken.

Rei put it in her pocket and continued on her way to save the woman who she loved.

Suddenly she hit with the fowl stench on goblin, yet something was different about it. She listened for the slightest movement but by the time she heard what was coming it was already too late for her to run.

A slender built creature with long arms and jet-black skin had pinned her to the ground.

Once again, she'd been too slow to dodge an enemy's attack.

The creature was like nothing she'd ever seen before; it didn't even look like it came from this world.

Its eyes were massive saucers, and it had teeth lining every inch of its mouth.

Rei refused lose another fight, not again.

She bit down on the creature's finger and drawn blood.

It must not be used to getting hurt because it let her go so it could look at its bleeding finger.

Like the ogre that she and Maxwell had encountered when they'd first met Elizabeth, the creature's injuries healed almost instantly.

Rei drew her blade, she didn't know how she'd do it yet, but she would slay this creature.

It came at her without any warning and faster than before, but she was ready this time.

Just as it leapt at her, she changed into her yokai form and sliced the creatures exposed stomach.

The creature let out a cry of pain even though its injuries had already started to heal. In retaliation, the creature rushed at her again, this time keeping low to the ground.

Rei countered by leaping over the creature and slicing it down the back.

It was becoming more obvious the creature didn't know how to utilize its full capabilities. It was if its own body was foreign to its mind.

The fight would keep ending in a stalemate if neither of them changed their strategy.

In the end Rei decided that her best option would be to just run away. She was wasting valuable time she could be using to save Elizabeth.

Plus, she wanted to save her strength for her rematch with Elaine.

When the creature charged at her again, she'd go for its eyes. While it's eyes where healing she'd make a run for it.

Her plan was all set when the creature suddenly started making a loud painful cry.

She hadn't even touched it. It then dawned on her what the creature had been doing.

  Its calling for help.

Rei ran as fast as she could to put as much distance between herself and the creature.

She'd managed herself against one of those creatures, she didn't want to see how she'd fair against a pack of them.

The question still remained what in the hells was that think?!

The goblin attacks had been a lie created by King Midas and the royal family, weren't they?

That was certainly what she thought when Elaine had shown them her collection of gremlin's heads.

If goblins weren't to blame for what was happening in Dulciena then what was? And What was it that attacked Buros and Maxwell on the night they'd first arrived to Dulciena?

Rei's head was starting to hurt with all these unanswered questions. The only thing she knew for certain was that she'd find her answers in Dulciena.
