Chapter 47:

Epilogue

Congratulations on Your Retirement!

Within Laios’s dense city centre, a team of elven mages, dressed in Royal College of Magic robes, are busily, carefully, scanning the street with a series of strange-looking scientific instruments. Regular townsfolk are forced to awkwardly step by them as they intensely study the readouts from their equipment.

One of their strange-looking staffs, with wires and gauges hooked to it, begins beeping and spitting out data to a magical screen. These eggheads all congregate near the screen, staring at it with curiosity.

They’re studying a strange phenomena that was picked up on the College’s regular sensor sweeps of the city. They’d been given the task of surveying and mapping it. The readouts were completely puzzling.

It was as if something were growing beneath the ground, infused with mana. The growth rate was terribly, terribly slow, so it wasn’t deemed a threat. It seemed to get denser in this neighborhood. So far, it had not exhibited any unusual behavior, but a team was assigned to monitor it around the clock.

Later that day, they submitted their survey results to a council of scientists. They crunched the numbers and displayed all the survey data gathered up to this point on a map. They had spotted the phenomena on both sides of the city, with large gaps inbetween as yet unsurveyed. Using math based on the density increases of the readings, they had come up with a pinpoint, a potential origin for it.

With a beep, it calculated out.

It was directly on top of Slime Lord Ios’s sealed-off chamber within the center of the city. Technically a property of the Royal College, it was supposed to be the first line of defense for any unusual happenings. This puzzled the scientists completely.

A team was sent to investigate. As they neared Ios’s containment facility on foot, their walking slowed, and they started to stumble. Tiny, purple tendrils had shot through the ground, piercing the scientists’ feet, infecting them. As if in a trance, they shuffled into an alleyway, and stood perfectly motionless for approximately two hours. Then, they all headed back, none the wiser.

False memories had been implanted in them. To them, they’d arrived, witnessed nothing unusual, gotten a positive report, and started heading home.

As they made their report to the head scientist, he squinted at them. How could that be? He was almost certain the phenomena was originating from there.

As they stood there, debating amongst themselves, one of the infected scientists tapped his foot on the floor. With a shock, a line of purple magic shot across the floor like lightning, infecting the other scientists in the room as well. Everyone fell eerily silent, then exited the room, one by one.

In Ios's chamber, what she was up to can only be described as frightful. She had captured approximately 400 people, slowly expanding her sphere of attack, minute by minute, day by day.

In Slime terms, she was... unhappy.
