Chapter 11:
Aria the Crimson Mage
Ash knelt beside a small stream, cupping water in his hands and taking a
long drink, the cold liquid easing his parched throat. His limbs ached from the relentless travel, the
weight of exhaustion heavy on his shoulders. Beside him, Kai stood alert, her tail swaying.
“Alright, Kai,” Ash said, straightening with a grunt, “let’s keep moving. Can’t stop now.”"
Kai huffed, her wolf eyes filled with determination. Ash chuckled, brushing a leaf from her fur. “I'll take it
you're ready.” He scratched behind her ears, smiling as her tail gave a small wag. “Good girl. We'll get
through this together, alright?”
Kai gave a soft whine, lowering her nose to pick up faint scents of alcohol. With a nod, she started
forward, and Ash followed closely.
As they moved cautiously through the thick brush, Ash caught sight of a shifting silhouette between the
trees. It was faint at first, a trick of the shadows perhaps, but then the figure stepped into the light.
Standing in the clearing ahead, Nia and Raven waited, their expressions smug and predatory, as if they
had known all along that Ash and Kai would arrive.
Raven’s sneer deepened as he locked eyes with Ash. “Well, look what the wolf dragged in.”
Ash’s hand sparked with electricity as his glare darkened. "Who are you guys? Are you working with the
Reapers?" Raven smirked in response, summoning green shadowy tendrils that writhed around him.
"Wouldn’t you like to know?" The sinister display was all the provocation Ash needed.
Kai growled, body low, eyes fixed on Raven. Nia, lounging at his side, tilted her head, watching Ash
with amusement.
“Oh, I do love it when they try to act tough,” Nia purred. “Think you'll be faster than my claw, boy?”
Ash didn’t waste a second. He summoned his twin daggers, both blades crackling with electricity.
With a nod to Kai, he darted forward, the air buzzing as he closed the distance.
Kai leaped at Raven, fangs bared. He jerked aside, an oozing tendril snapping toward her with deadly
precision. Kai twisted sharply in midair, her body a blur of motion, and landed with a heavy thud. Her
paws ignited in blue flame, the ground singeing beneath her as she let out a low, feral snarl that sent a
flicker of hesitation across Raven’s face.
Ash clashed with Nia, his movements quick as he struck with the electrically charged daggers. He
couldn’t shake the feeling that her speed was more than natural—her feline grace felt like she was
reading his attacks before he made them. She’s not just dodging… she’s baiting me, Ash thought,
gritting his teeth. He adjusted his stance, focusing his strikes on her weaker left side, trying to throw her
off balance. Sparks flew with each strike, and Ash pressed his advantage, charging his blades with
electricity before each strike, forcing her to stay on the defensive as she narrowly avoided his relentless
attacks.
Kai circled the enemies, the flames from her feet igniting the ground as she ran, creating a towering
ring of blue fire around them. The intense flames crackled and danced, enclosing the space and cutting
off any chance of escape. Raven’s face twisted as he eyed the flames, a desperate plan forming.
With a shaky breath, Raven dropped to his knees, pressing his hands to the ground. A dark circle
spread, turning the earth beneath Kai into sludge. Her paws sank, trapping her. She thrashed, but the
muck held fast. Her flames did little to free her, and her roar echoed through the clearing.
“Kai!” Ash yelled. He conjured four glowing daggers in each hand, hurling them at Raven in rapid
succession. The air sizzled as they flew.
Raven instinctively raised his hand to cast a spell—only to freeze in horror as he had forgotten his hand
was missing. The daggers struck his side and shoulder, surging electricity through him, paralyzing him
with pain.
Raven crumpled, but the sludge still held Kai. Ash’s attention flicked to Kai’s roar, the desperation in her
struggle breaking his focus for a split second.
Nia seized the moment, closing in. “Poor little human,” she purred mockingly, lunging and tackling Ash
to the ground, her claws pressed to his throat. He grimaced, struggling as her sharp nails pressed
deeper.
Kai snarled from the sludge, her blue flames flaring wildly, but Ash, breath labored and shaking,
shouted, “Kai, go! Get out of here!”
Kai hesitated, her gaze locked on his. A glimmer of understanding passed between them, and with a
final mournful growl, she broke free from the sludge’s last hold, bounding away from the clearing.
Ash turned back to Nia, his movements slowing as exhaustion set in. Seizing the opening of Kai's
escape, he gripped her arm, channeling a desperate burst of electricity. The shock forced her to
stumble back, stunned but not defeated. He watched as Kai disappeared, his own resolve tightening
despite his blood trickling onto the ground. His vision blurred, the world around him spinning as
exhaustion and pain finally overwhelmed him. Darkness crept into his mind, and he collapsed,
unconscious.
The faint glow of dawn crept through the cracks of the dim room, marking the passage of a full day. Ash
groaned as he slowly regained consciousness, his vision swimming before settling on a dimly lit room
lined with cloaked figures. His head throbbed; his wrists ached from the rough ropes binding them
behind his back. He glanced up and froze as he spotted two familiar figures.
Raven and Nia knelt before a throne at the room’s head, battered and visibly shaken. The muttering
between them was faint, but he could sense their fear.
Ash’s gaze shifted to the woman on the throne. Her presence exuded a chilling charisma. Dark eyes
gleamed with amusement, and her hair spilled over her shoulders like a shadow. She watched Raven
and Nia with a twisted smile.
The woman let out a theatrical sigh, addressing her two subordinates. “You know, I expected a lot from
my favorites, yet here you are... disappointing me. Raven without an arm, Nia... not looking as cute as
usual.”
Raven’s face darkened, while Nia’s ears flattened. They stammered, but a sharp glare from the woman
silenced them.
She turned her gaze to the cloaked figures lining the walls, giving a subtle nod. They burst into mock
applause, laughter echoing through the room. Ash’s face twisted in confusion and frustration as she
raised a hand to silence them, bringing the room back to eerie stillness.
The woman’s eyes landed on him, a glint of malice. “So, they brought you here, thinking you might offer
something useful?” Her voice turned sharp, dripping with sarcasm. “Tell me, boy, what exactly do you
plan to do now? Negotiate with charm?”
Ash’s heart hammered, but he forced himself to speak. “My family… If they knew… they’d let all this
go.” His voice, barely more than a hoarse plea, wavered as he struggled against his bindings. “Just let
me go, and they’ll never come after you. This isn't something you'll get away with otherwise.”
The woman’s laughter rang out, her eyes gleaming with twisted delight. “Oh, I don’t think that will be
necessary.” She raised a finger, and a chain lashed out, embedding itself into his side and yanking him
toward her with ruthless force. The momentum slammed his back against the cold stone wall, knocking
the air from his lungs. Pinned against the wall, Ash gasped, his body trembling as the chain coiled
tighter. A sharp pulse surged through his side, and he choked back a scream as a terrible force pulled
at him. His limbs felt heavy, and a hollow, gnawing ache spread through his chest—like something vital
was being siphoned away. What is she doing? Why does it feel like I’m falling apart?
Azami leaned in close, her lips curling into a sly smile as her fingers traced the bloodied chain. Ash
flinched at her proximity, every nerve screaming as the chain throbbed with pain. Stay calm, he
thought, though his ragged breaths betrayed him. "You're not bad-looking for a little fighter," she
murmured, her voice dripping with mock sweetness, the words twisting like a dagger in his pride. Her
gaze lingered on his pain-filled eyes as she tilted her head, letting her breath brush against his ear.
"This isn't one of those situations you walk away from, kid," she whispered, her tone equal parts
amusement and menace.
Ash could barely think, his mind wracked with pain as the chain pulsed, drawing out his mana. It felt like
his very essence was being ripped away, leaving a hollow, aching void in its wake.
She turned to Raven and Nia, smirk widening. “What, exactly, do I do with failures like you?”
Nia’s confidence faltered, her gaze dropping. Her usual playful demeanor shattered completely, her
voice a fragile whisper as she forced a trembling smile. “We’re not failures, my lady,” she stammered,
ears flattening as she tried to sound convincing. “W-we caught him, didn’t we? Isn’t that… isn’t that
good enough?” The forced bravado in her tone cracked like thin glass, leaving only the terror in her
eyes.
“A tribute, is he? And yet, here you are—all assigned tasks failed.” She gave a soft sigh. “I should think
twice about keeping either of you around.”
Nia’s bravado faltered, her ears flattening as she stole a nervous glance at Raven, who clenched his
jaw, his gaze averted.
The woman leaned forward, her voice soft but cutting through the hall like a blade. “Tell me, what am I
supposed to do with such... utter failures?”
The two knelt, silent and tense, unable to answer as a sudden gust of wind slammed into the hall’s
grand doors, blowing them open. Cloaked guards near the entrance tumbled back as blue flames
exploded through the entryway, sending those unlucky enough to stand in the blast’s radius flying
across the room.
The woman leaned forward, intrigued as the smoke cleared to reveal Jarvis, walking calmly into the
hall. Beside him, Kai padded forward, her blue flames casting an eerie glow. She looked disdainfully at
the guards and then casually spat out a severed arm, her gaze bright with satisfaction.
Without looking at the carnage, Jarvis strode to the throne, stopping just before the steps as he gave
the woman a mocking nod.
“Ah, the famed Reaper Queen,” he greeted, sarcasm heavy in his voice. “You’ve been entertaining my
nephew, I see.”
The woman’s smirk deepened as she returned his gaze. “A blond lion with such an attitude. How…
fitting.” She cast a glance at Kai, who watched her, unflinching. “And you brought a friend, I see.”
Jarvis didn’t miss a beat. “You’re tangling with a family that doesn’t take kindly to this sort of treatment.
Release Ash, and I might just leave peacefully.”
The woman let out a low chuckle, her voice echoing through the hall. “Oh, you’re serious? I thought
you’d be more interesting.” She waved her hand, releasing the chain and letting Ash drop to the floor,
bleeding but defiant.
She turned her gaze to Nia and Raven. “Well, since you two were in need of redemption, consider this
your chance.” She nodded toward Jarvis and Kai, voice cold. “Deal with them.”
Raven and Nia glanced at each other, exhausted but without choice. They turned to face their new
opponents.
Jarvis cracked his knuckles, throwing Kai a sideways grin. “Alright, girl, give me some of that fire.” Kai’s
flames intensified, and with a swift punch, he redirected the burst toward Raven, the wind magic lacing
his strike turning it into a forceful blast engulfing Raven in a wall of blue fire.
Raven let out a guttural scream as the flames tore into him, his arms flailing in panic. In desperation, he
summoned a swarm of rats, but they scattered wildly, their burning bodies leaving trails of fire that
spread across the room. Raven’s shrieks echoed as the flames consumed him, his form twisting before
collapsing into smoldering ash amid the chaos. His body twisted, collapsing into smoldering ash, while
the embers left trails of flickering destruction across the room.
Kai stepped forward, unbothered by the chaos, her blue flames flickering around her as her gaze
locked onto the ashes where Raven had fallen.
Jarvis dusted his hands off and smirked at Nia, his eyes gleaming with challenge. "Well, that’s one
down. Ready for round two, cat?"
Nia froze, her gaze darting to the ashes where Raven had fallen. Her playful mask cracked, and horror
flashed across her face. "You... you bastard!" she hissed, fists trembling as her claws glinted. Her ears
flattened, and for a moment, her voice faltered. "You’ll pay for that."
Jarvis tilted his head mockingly, his voice calm and sharp as a blade. "Oh? Is that guilt I hear? Or just
the sound of you realizing you’re next?" He raised a hand, the air around him shifting with a subtle gust.
"Come on, then. Show me you're more than a stray."
Nia charged at Jarvis with a scream, hurling a flurry of wind-laden leaves at him, their razor-sharp
edges slicing through the air. Jarvis stood his ground, a calm focus in his eyes as he swept his hand
forward. A burst of wind magic scattered the attack, the leaves spiraling harmlessly away as he
advanced with steady, measured steps.
Nia's face contorted in frustration, her voice turning hoarse as she poured everything into her next
attacks—gusts of wind and slicing gales—but Jarvis deflected each one with precision.
Her movements grew desperate, her strikes erratic as he closed the distance. She lunged, claws bared
in a final, reckless attack. Jarvis sidestepped smoothly, catching her wrists in an iron grip. She gasped,
eyes wide with panic as she struggled, but his strength was unrelenting.
“Nice try,” he muttered, his voice calm and cold. With a sharp twist, her wrist gave a sickening crack,
and she let out a choked cry of pain. He released her, and she crumpled to the ground, clutching her
arm as tears welled in her eyes.
Azami observed with amusement, her dark eyes gleaming with intrigue as she watched Jarvis stand
over her defeated subordinates, the faintest trace of a smirk on her lips.
Jarvis steadied himself, meeting Azami’s gaze with cold intensity. “What’s your endgame here? Stirring
trouble in a forgotten corner when you could have a cozy cell back in the capital. Wouldn’t that be more
pleasant than this dump?”
Azami laughed, her voice rich with amusement as she leaned forward, her eyes glittering with dark
excitement. “Oh, but where’s the thrill in that? A life without stakes—without danger or drama? How
dreadfully dull.”
He shook his head, disgust lining his features. “You’re truly insane.” Without another word, he lunged
forward, determined to close the distance.
Azami moved with deadly grace, whipping a chain toward him. He dodged, his eyes locked on her
hands, ready to counter. But with a wicked grin, she shifted, and from behind her back, two more
chains snaked forward, glinting in the dim light as they struck with ruthless precision.
Jarvis’s eyes widened in realization, but it was too late. The chains drove into his side, sending searing
pain through him. It feels like fire and ice at the same time... What is she doing to me? The thought
struck him, though his strength waned with every second. I can barely stand... it’s like she’s draining
something out of me. He stumbled, dropping to one knee, blood beginning to stain his shirt.
Kai tensed, blue flames flaring around her as she prepared to leap forward, but Jarvis raised a hand,
signaling her to stay back.
Azami chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Listen to him, little pup." She stepped back with an almost
theatrical nonchalance, her smile sharp and cruel. Her chains retracted lazily, as though she’d lost
interest. "I could end this now... but where’s the satisfaction in that? Watching you squirm—knowing
you’re alive just long enough to wonder what’s coming—is so much more entertaining." She let the
chains retract further, her gaze cold and distant as she gestured dismissively. "Crawl back to your little
kingdom, lick your wounds, and deliver this message for me—you're outmatched, and this is just the
beginning.""
Jarvis, struggling to keep his breath steady, looked up. “You’ll regret it,” Jarvis muttered, his voice
hoarse. “People like you always do.”
With that, she retracted her chains, letting Jarvis slump to the ground beside Ash, who lay battered and
bruised. Silence filled the room as Azami disappeared through the door, tossing a casual wave over her
shoulder. Her soft, mocking laugh echoed back to them, lingering in the air like a taunt that refused to
fade.
In the aftermath, the room fell into an uneasy calm. Jarvis and Ash lay sprawled on the floor, bloodied
and exhausted, the tension slowly unraveling with each shaky breath.
Jarvis exhaled a strained chuckle, the sound weak but unmistakably lighthearted. His body sagged
against the cold floor, blood smearing his torn shirt as he tried to sit up. “Still alive, somehow,” he
murmured, his voice ragged, though tinged with that familiar stubborn humor.
Ash turned his head, his face twisted in pain, but the corner of his lips lifted into a faint, tired smile.
“Always a joy to be around you, uncle.”
Jarvis’s laugh came deeper this time, though it ended with a grimace. “Yeah, well, you’re not exactly
great company either.”
They both turned their gaze to Kai, who had been silently watching them from a few steps away. Her
ears twitched as she let out a low huff, her expression hovering between concern and irritation, as if
silently scolding them for being so careless.
Jarvis, still holding his side, glanced at her and managed a crooked grin. “What? Don’t look at me like
that. I did all the work.”
Kai tilted her head in exaggerated disbelief, tail swishing as if to say you’re hopeless. She turned on her
heel and padded toward the door, her movements deliberate and full of indignation.
Ash let out a breathless laugh, wincing as he tried to shift. “Want to keep this whole thing a secret?”
“Oh, I’d love to, but I think I’ll stay here for a bit.” Jarvis sighed, his voice laced with exhaustion but
carrying a hint of humor. He let his head fall back against the floor, his eyes slipping shut for a brief
moment. “If we’re lucky, maybe she’s fetching help.”
As their laughter faded, the sound of footsteps receded, leaving the room steeped in silence. Just
beyond the door, Azami paused. She reached into her cloak, pulling out a small vial filled with a pale
blue liquid. With a sly smile and a glint of satisfaction in her eyes, she lifted it to her lips and downed it
in one swift motion. As she turned, her voice echoed faintly, almost teasing. “Time to pay the girl a
visit.” Her grin lingered as the faintest flick of a tail emerged beneath her cloak, swaying once before
she vanished into the shadows, leaving only silence in her wake.
