Chapter 28:

A strange introduction

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

The prices for both the mare and the wagon were pretty high. Saito managed to haggle it down, but it still feels like he lost. He sighs. Much of his savings are gone.
(At least it won't go to waste. He can bring those home once he's done travelling and repurpose it for his family.)

Borghild: "For someone as wise as yourself, you're not a very good merchant.
Saito: "Trading isn't one of my skills, I've never really looked too much into it. And I feel like I'm just being annoying by pushing people around with lower prices."
Borghild: "That's why you're doing poorly. You have to only think of yourself."

Jeff's eyes goes from one to the other.
(Woah. The dwarf is scolding Saito.)

Saito: "I'll let you do it next time then. At least we got something for now."
Jeff: "I can drive so you both can rest."
Saito: "I was thinking about alterna-"
Borghild: "SURE! I'll go lay down then!"

Borghild hops in the wagon right away.
Oh. Well then.

Saito: "If you're tired at any point, we can switch."
Jeffrey: "It's okay. That's what I did for a living when I was younger, I kinda like travelling on horses."

The leader walks up to the mare, taking a look.
He's seen horses in real life before. Mostly back in Japan.
This mare is looking surprisingly sturdy. It'll do.

Saito looks back at the vendor.
"Does she have a name?"
"No, she does not."

I'll have to think of one. Jeff like horses, he probably has suggestions.
He grabs the mare by the leash, pulling it toward the wagon.

Saito: "Jeff, this horse doesn't have a name. Got any idea?"
His eyes turn to look at her more cautiously. She's almost entirely covered in dark fur, with lighter spots down her legs.
Jeff: "What about..Elora."
Saito: "Sure? I'm fine with that. Elora it is."

The soldier's eyes move past the horse, noticing a familar cloaked figure approaching.
(Wait. Is that the same person that was listening in to us last time?)

Saito notices he's looking away and looks over.
She walks up to them and smile. Her long ears very slightly protruding through her cloak.
"Hello. Are you looking for more adventurers still?"
Saito: "Yeah."
"Can I join?"

Jeff: "Hold onnn. Sai, can I talk to you for a second.
He nods, walking a bit further.

Jeff: "She was listening in on us back in the tavern last time when you spoke to Borghild. I don't feel like we can trust her."
Saito: "I can see why you'd feel that way. It's kind of suspicious."
Jeff: "Think about it. How did she know we were here?"

That's an even better question. How did she? Would she tell them if he politely asked?

Saito: "Okay. Thanks for letting me know."
He turns around, walking back to her. She's giving him a smile.
She heard everything didn't she?
I'll cut the chase.

Saito: "How did you find us?"
"I used magic. I have a couple sensory spells that help me locate or notice things."

Sensory magic. That's something he never really came across of so far. That'd be pretty valuable to have around.
Saito: "Can you fight?"
"Yeah, of course."
Saito: "Is there any reason why you chose to come to us now?"
"Well! I heard you talk about killing a dragon. You've come back alive, so I can assume you've killed it right? Sounds like I can make money here."

Ahhh. She's the money driven type. That's easy to understand.
Saito: "You know what we're after then?"
"The demon lord, I heard. That's fine."

She's really suspicious. Her alibis and reasons make sense. But it still feels off somehow.
Either way, she'd be valuable to have around. He hasn't really made any enemies in Glarion, so there's no reason for someone to come after him or backstab him.

Saito: "Alright then, welcome aboard. What's your name?"
Upon hearing him welcome the girl, Jeff rubs his face in disbelief.

"I'm Sera. Nice to meet you."
Saito: "Nice to meet you too."

Borghild's head pops out of the wagon.
"We got a new one?"
Sera: "Hello!"

The moment he sees her, Borghild nods in approval, moving back into the wagon.
Jeff curses internally. (YOU'RE FINE WITH IT JUST BECAUSE SHE'S CUTE?)

She comes closer to Jeff. He looks away, frustrated.
Sera: "What's your name?"
"It's Jeffrey."
Sera: "So Jeff. Nice to meet you."

The man sighs, forcing himself to welcome her.
(I really wish Saito listened to my advices more.)

The protagonist would bring the mare to the wagon, prepping it on.
It'd take at most ten minutes, and then they're ready to go.
Jeffrey takes his seat in front of the wagon, ready to go.
Sera, Borghild and Saito head inside.
The command is then given, the horse begins to pull the wagon away, back toward Glowvia.

Now hidden from the outside, Sera pulls down her cloak. Her ears flick up.
Borghild: "Ohhh. An elf huh."
Sera: "I hope it's not a problem."
Borghild: "I'm a dwarf. I don't care."

Saito smiles to his simple answer. That's a good way to put it. Races here don't matter.
"Is there a reason why it would matter?"

She looks confused for a moment. As if nobody has ever asked that before.
Sera: "Are you perhaps unaware of history?"
Saito: "Truth be told, I'm not very knowledgeable about history."

Spending two years in the military, he's learnt a great deal about history but mostly the important parts. He wasn't taught the smaller bits info, nor anything that the military doesn't seem as relevant. Borghild glances at his new friend.

Borghild: "Elves used to be a hated race. They haven't done anything wrong, at any points through history. But demons have the same type of ear. That led to other races discriminating against elves as much as they did with demons, thinking they both were apart of the same cursed family branch. The prosecution was wild until it was proven they had nothing to do with each other. This mentality hasn't completely disappeared."

That's horrible. Who in their right mind would prosecute an entire race based on how they look? Racism is a known issue on earth. I suppose it's unfortunately an universal flaw across all living beings.

Saito: "I'm really sorry you still have to deal with this kind of thing. I do promise you though, you won't face that sort of judgement here."

Sera: "Thank you. I feel better knowing that."
The wheel hits a hole, the wagon bumps up, making them all jump.
Jeff: "Sorry!"

Saito: "Is there any particular reason as to why you'd want to fight the demon king, or is it more about money?"
Sera: "Money's always nice. But I just want to be there when all of it goes down. I want to see what happens. If the lord is still alive yet doesn't attack, something's probably up.

(I've been thinking the same thing.)
In history books, Glarion managed to repel the demon invasion. But at no point does it mention the defeat of the Demon King. As if he just vanished or stopped fighting altogether for centuries going forward. If he truly was evil, why would he stop there? He really wants to meet that person.

Sera: "So! Where are we headed to?"
Saito: "My home. I'm visiting my wife."
Sera: "How sweet of you."
Saito: "I guess so."

It's embarrassing to bring up every time. But with a wife comes great responsabilities.
