Chapter 33:

The journey ahead

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

A while had passed since then. Sera drops down from a tree, right beside the wagon.
Jeffrey: "WOAH! You scared me!"
Sera: "Maybe you should be more aware of your surroundings then~"
Jeffrey: "Maybe you should stop dropping from trees."

She shrugs. Maybe eventually he'll learn to stay alert at all times. Better odds staying alive that way.

Jeffrey: "Did you find out anything?"
Sera: "I think it's worse than we anticipated."
Borghild: "What is happening?"
Sera: "Ontop of closing their border, they started spreading misinformation that Glarion will soon be attacking them. They have troops rallied near the border alongside their champion. Whether they raid or not is difficult for me to say. The champion sensed me in the vicinity."
Borghild: "Doesn't sound like they're around to defend the border."

Jeff looks at her, growing respect for her.
Had she not scouted and heard that much, Saito could've failed to convince his family to leave.
She probably saved many lives with this alone. That alone is worthy of his respect. She's still suspicious, he doesn't trust her, but he now sees the value in keeping her around.
Sera: "Where's Saito?"
Jeffrey: "Not sure. He kind of vanished."

Sera looks around, trying to detect lifeforms. A lot of people resides here, but nobody's in the woods. Instead of focusing on their pulses, she focuses on sensing mana. A record breaking amount of it can be felt coming from the farms.
Sera: "I think he's at the farms."
Borghild: "Let's go have a talk with him."
Jeffrey: "He won't like it one bit."

Following the trees behind Saito's home, large plots of land growing various vegetables and wheat stand out. Anything growing from this ground has a vibrant color, making the garden look like a rainbow. Chloe shows him around, showing him the different vegetables they're growing. Although he's been around since 2 years, he still gets surprised whenever they show him food he's never seen in his life. (It's like relearning everything from scratch.)

Borghild: "They seem to be having fun."
Sera: "Time to crash the party~"

Saito's attention gets pulled to them.
Saito: "Oh hey guys. Did you find something out?"
Sera: "Yeah, you won't like it.

Chloe and Saito exchange a look. What now?
Sera takes her time, explaining in great detail everything she's seen and everything she hear, including how many of them were rallied and their potential intentions.

Chloe's joy fades completely, now looking worried. Saito's face tenses up.
This is bad. It's really bad. Vestris is actually preparing themselves for war.
Chloe: "Do we have to leave this place..? Leave home behind?"

Her face looks up at Saito, seeking warmth and reassurance. But Saito's mind already was elsewhere.
(This is the most complicated case I've seen. If he were to dispatch the military to protect his village, Vestris could accuse them of rallying a raiding group and use that excuse to launch a war. The same could be said if he deals with them himself right now. If he leaves people in this village, there's a good chance they'll be murdered or kidnapped, held as hostages. Should he leave with everyone, there's no guarantee the homes will be left standing coming back. The garden will be left scavenged. It's almost as if his only alternative is to guard the village himself. But he can't stay here indefinitely. He has to hunt the Demon King, per God's request.)

Saito sighs, rubbing his forehead. This is bad.
Saito: "I'm sorry Chloe, this is a really delicate issue. I'll need to talk to Trevor about it. Mind if we do after eating? I don't want to spoil my visit either."
Chloe: "Okay, I'll wait."

He nods in response. That's the sensible thing to do.
Sera: "Where will you bring the villagers?"
Saito: "I'll use my lifesaving to afford them rent in the main city. Until it calms down at least. Arguably we could also offer them residence beside the military castle. They offer tents in times of emergency."
Jeffrey: "You're right. This is an emergency, it should be easy to explain."

Saito: "Let's head back home."
They agree, heading back.
The sunny sky becomes cloudy, concealing the bright, warm sun beneath layers of cloud. His vacation didn't last long. It has rapidly turned into a nightmare scenario.
(I hope it doesn't rain.)

He walks inside, looking over the kitchen. Both Via and Trevor are currently looking over the fireplace, cooking up the pies they've been working on.
Trevor: "Are you guys hungry already? It'll be ready in a small while, please be patient. Otherwise, nice to meet you all."
They greet in other in a mix of casual to formal greetings. They begin talking, getting to know each other's names. Trevor seems to take great interest in the dwarf while Via moreso seems to like Sera's looks. Their home, usually quiet, are filled with voices, multiple conversations going at once.
While his comrades have experience with war, they have an easier time hiding their worries, enjoying the moment. Chloe however, isn't capable of the some prowess. Saito sits beside her, leaning his shoulder against his wife. His hand grabs her, trying to reassure her.

Saito: "I know it's a lot to think about. But I want to promise you everything will be okay. No matter what happens, no matter what is destroyed, everything can be rebuilt given time. Okay?" Murmured the young man.

She grasps his hand with both of hers. Her lover always had a way with words when it came to her. Perhaps he's right. Anything can indeed be rebuilt. It wouldn't be the same as it was before, but it doesn't need to be like before. As long as she's surrounded by the people she loves, her life will be alright.

Chloe: "Okay. I'll be okay. Because you promised me."
He smiles in return. She knows how much promises mean to him. He told her abut how much he values it during his first week around.
(I wonder if the streams are still going. It's been two years.)
Unbeknown to him, yes. The streams never had stop. Time flows differently from one world to another. What felt like 2 years for him is more like a month to earth. The most important scenes highlighted for them. While the popularity of the show dropped after surviving his first week, the fandom is very much alive, eager to see him struggle once more.

Trevor: "They're ready!"
Excited, he pulls them off the oven, giving everyone a fair share.
Overall, everyone here that day had a good time and a good laugh. Borghild had the wine he sought. Sera felt comfortable in Via's company. Jeffrey felt like pulling his hair, Trevor teasing him. And finally Saito felt comfortable in company of his loved one.

Once the atmosphere calms down, their food devoured. Our protagonist takes a deep breath and stands up. "Trevor, Via. I have something important to say. This might be difficult to hear, but it's important."

Trevor: "Is that what you wanted to tell us earlier?"
Saito: "I'm afraid it is."

Trevor stares at him, thinking he was ready to hear it. He wasn't.
The news of a potential raid ontop of the information Sera eavesdropped from the guards are enough to convince him. This village is his life. Everything he's known. He have spend all his years building it, fighting for the community. But all things have to come to an end one day.
Trevor: "Very well. Better we all stay alive and rebuild together than stay here and gamble our lives. If you say so Saito, I believe you. I'll convince the others as well."
Sera: "Do you have enough wagons to carry everything?"
Trevor: "No, we have one horse and one wagon in this village. A lot will need to be sacrificed.

Everyone's expression darken.
Saito: "I'll load as much supplies and valuables as possible for you in my wagon."
Trevor: "Thank you.

The rest of the day passes remotely quickly. Knocking at all doors one by one, all 22 houses, Trevor warns them of what's to come, occasionally arguing and confronting people that refuses to leave.
Trevor might not be the best. But he knows how to be convincing. He's known to be a caring man, his heart in his hand. Patient and understanding, the sun begins to set. Only then did he manage for everyone to leave the next morning, giving them the night to choose which limited belongings they want to bring with them.

Sleeping that night was difficult. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend.
He probably had an easier time sleeping than the others, Chloe's head resting on his chest.
Departing will be the hardest part. But he'll be here the day they need to rebuild, if needed.
(I will protect you, no matter what.)

They woke up early, awoken by the commotion of villagers rallying by the exit of the village, dragging their belongings. Some look pained, some angry, some disappointed.
It's a harsh reality for them. (At least they're not getting isekai'ed.)

Trevor's family don't bring much. A couple bags of clothes and food they can eat overtime.
Being the town's blacksmith, Trevor does possess a lot of valuable. In an attempt to conceal his inventory, he buried everything within a hole, bringing his most valuable materials with him for money. The town's merchant seems to be going through similar struggles, doing the same.

The young kids and the elders are loaded onto the wagon. Those capable of walking, from young to older, will be walking beside the wagon for 3 days worth of time. There's another wagon in the way. If needed, Saito will pull it himself so the tired men and woman can rest.

The hero looks at them, sadness visible on his face. People rally up, ready to depart soon.
Chloe looks up at him.
Chloe: "You can so much about others. But will you be okay?"
Saito: "As long as you're with me, I'll be okay. I need to talk with my party for a bit."

She nods, going on the tip of her toes to give him a kiss, heading toward her mother.

Okay. Now I need to talk with my group.
Saito: "Sera. Jeffrey. Borghild. Come over please."
As he requests, they come closer, rallying to him.

Saito: "We'll have to keep our eyes open at all time. Most of them can't fight. If any monster attack, we'll have to fend them off as quickly as possible.
Borghild: "Don't even worry about that. Monsters won't even know what hit' em."
Jeffrey: "I'll keep your family safe, you can count on me."
Sera: "I'd say you're in good hands."

Saito: -Thank you. There's something else I want to talk about.

Right. My goal is to slain the Demon King. But the likely invasion of an entire kingdom threatens to delay his plans by perhaps several years, depending on how it goes. Is God causing Vestris to attack? Thinking about it, it's been two years. It wouldn't be surprising of he grew bored and plotted something again..

Saito: "This war. If it happens, will delay my plans to seek the Demon King. I don't know by how long. But since I'm a Champion, I will be deployed almost immediately. This could take years.

Jeffrey: "I'm not with you because I want to kill a demon. I'm with you because you asked me to be here. No matter how long it takes, I'll follow you anywhere. Plus, if you beat Glarion's hero, you won't be held accountable for every emergency.

He's right. I'll have to challenge the man for his position soon.

Borghild: "This a valid reason. I don't think you're a cheat. This war will take priority, but I'd also like not be tied down by it. I agree with Jeffrey. Become Glarion's hero.

Sera: "To me it doesn't really matter. As long as you plan big I'll stick around. If that other kingdom threatens to kill innocent people, then you have my word. I'll do everything in my power to help you subdue them. Regardless of the cost."

Saito: "I'm glad to have you guys around. I couldn't have asked for better."
He truly is lucky to have people of such talent willing to follow him, no many how many years it takes. His party of 4 is looking solid. (Is that how adventurers feel like when their party bonds together? This feels fulfilling in its own way.)

Saito: "Thank you. Let's head out then.
The party returns to the wagons, helping people pack up, pushing baggage up into the storage space. With everything ready and everyone awaiting their departure, Saito steps back, raising his voice.

Saito: "Thank you for believing in us! We'll do our best to protect and recover your home once danger is clear. We're leaving!"

The order given, the wagons began to move forward, villagers following them in a pack.
A deep sense of relief in his heart, our hero feels a weight off his conscience.
These people are safer now. Away from a potential war.

His eyes look at the sky, the clouds slowly moving aside, leaving place to a beautiful sunrise. Beams of light began coursing through the forest, illuminating everything.
The scenery is like a good omen, showing promises of a better future.
Chloe walks by his side as his companions are spread around the travelling group, keeping an eye out for any potential danger.

Who knows what the future holds for him? Surely more trials and difficult times. God will make sure of that. He used his own wish to revive himself here, promising God that he'll one day become strong enough to challenge the very foundations of his beliefs through combat. He very much intends on keeping his word. (Just wait for it. I'll punch your face one day. It'll make everything worth it.)

His family safe, an adventurer party assembled, his Demon King quest in the future and the wavering tensions between Glarion and Vestris. There's a lot coming forward to this adventure.
But that is fine. After all, his journey only began.
