Chapter 11: The Morning After and the First Date

Famous Gamer Girl is My Childhood Friend (Vol 1)

Shouka woke up to the aggressive, unrelenting chirping of birds outside his window. For a blissful, groggy moment, he thought it was all a dream. The roaring crowd, the blinding lights, the weight of the trophy, Kimi’s confession, the kiss. It had to be a fabrication of his sleep-deprived, over-caffeinated brain. He rolled over and groaned, pulling a pillow over his head. Then his phone buzzed on the nightstand. And again. And again. A relentless torrent of notifications.

With a sense of dread, he reached for it. The screen lit up with hundreds of messages from friends, old classmates, and random people he barely knew. His social media had exploded. But it was the top notification that made his heart stop. A simple good morning message from Kimi, with a smiling emoji. It was real. All of it.

He stumbled out of his room, his mind still trying to process the tectonic shift his life had undergone in the last 24 hours, and was met with a scene of utter chaos. His sister, Shita, was in the living room, which she had converted into some kind of shrine. Posters of Spicarie-no, of Kimi-were plastered on the walls. Her gaming monitor was cycling through a slideshow of Kimi’s greatest tournament moments. Shita herself was wearing an official Spicarie jersey and holding two lightsticks, a look of manic, conflicted energy in her eyes.

"Good morning, brother of the goddess!" she declared, her voice unnaturally chipper. "I have prepared a victory breakfast for the man who is dating my idol! It is both a celebratory feast and a warning meal! I am happy for you, but if you hurt her, I have a thousand online followers who will write very mean comments about you!"

Shouka just stared at the plate of burnt pancakes she was offering him. "Shita, it’s seven in the morning. Please calm down."

"Calm is for mortals!" she shrieked, before her phone buzzed. Her expression shifted instantly to one of intense focus. "Ooh, the official team Discord is active. Kimi’s manager just posted the schedule!"

Before Shouka could ask, his own phone buzzed with the same notification. A message from a woman named Ms. Aya, Kimi’s manager. It was a schedule for the newly christened super-team, now officially named "Stardust Breakers." The first item on the agenda: a mandatory team-bonding dinner tonight at a high-end restaurant. The second item, addressed only to him, made his stomach do a backflip.

Ms. Aya: Shouka-san, Kimi has expressed a desire for a… personal outing… with you this afternoon. A car will be waiting for you at 2 PM. Please be ready. We believe this is an excellent PR opportunity.

A date. His first date with Kimi. And it was a "PR opportunity." The romance was truly alive and well in the world of esports. He spent the next few hours in a state of low-grade panic, trying on every shirt he owned, much to Shita’s derisive amusement.

At exactly 2 PM, a sleek black car pulled up outside his apartment building. He got in, his hands clammy. Kimi was already in the back, looking radiant in a simple white dress. The awkwardness was immediate and palpable.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi," she replied, a shy smile on her face.

They were driven to a private, high-end aquarium, which Ms. Aya had apparently rented out for two hours just for them. The idea was clearly to create a romantic, picturesque "first date" for the inevitable media leak. As they walked through the silent, blue-lit halls, surrounded by silently drifting sharks and manta rays, the absurdity of the situation began to feel overwhelming.

"So…" Shouka started, trying to break the silence. "That jellyfish looks… gelatinous."

Kimi let out a small giggle, the sound echoing in the vast space. "You’re terrible at this."

"I’m sorry!" he said, his face flushing. "I've never been on a date that was also a public relations opportunity before. I don't know the protocol!"

"The protocol is to just be you, clumsy kid," she said, her smile turning warm and genuine. She gently bumped his shoulder with hers. "Forget the cameras that are probably hidden in the fake coral. Just talk to me."

And so he did. They talked for what felt like hours, wandering through the mesmerizing exhibits. They talked about everything and nothing-their favorite foods, the stupid things they did as kids, their dreams for the future. He learned that the ruthless, calculating Spicarie was terrified of spiders and had a weakness for strawberry shortcake. She learned that the strategic, calm MrJanitor secretly loved cheesy romance movies and was a surprisingly good cook. It wasn't a PR opportunity anymore. It was just them.

As they stood in front of the massive central tank, watching a sea turtle glide serenely past, Kimi gently took his hand. "I was so scared, you know," she whispered. "That the person I remembered wouldn't be the person you are now. Or that you’d only see Spicarie and not me."

"I see both," he said softly, squeezing her hand. "And they're both pretty amazing."

The team-bonding dinner that night was a much louder, more chaotic affair. The restaurant was fancy, but the atmosphere at their private table was anything but. Kenji, free from his arrogant "Tempest" persona, was surprisingly loud and jovial. He spent most of the night trying to get the stoic Daichi to crack a smile, a mission at which he failed spectacularly. Haru, the prankster, tried to swap the salt and sugar shakers, only to be foiled by the ever-observant Emi, who fixed him with a withering glare that could have frozen lava. The interaction sparked an immediate, unspoken rivalry between the two.

Yuki, Mina, and Akiro seemed to be adjusting well to their new, world-famous teammate. Yuki and Kimi, in particular, seemed to be forming a fast friendship, bonding over the shared, bizarre experience of having their lives orbit around Shouka.

As Shouka looked around the table at this strange, dysfunctional, wonderful group of people who had become his team, he felt a sense of belonging he hadn't realized he was missing. It was crazy. It was unexpected. But it was his.

His phone buzzed. It was a news alert. A gossip site had already posted a photo of him and Kimi holding hands at the aquarium. The headline read: "Gaming Royalty’s New King?"

He showed the phone to Kimi, who just rolled her eyes and laughed. "Well," she said, leaning in close to him. "They’re not wrong."
