Chapter 5:
Starlight: The Song of Home
“Alright, stand up straight as you can with your arms straight out to your sides.” Vasilis said as he grabbed some measuring tape.
“You mean, you want me to T pose?” Mina asked.
“I’m not sure what that means, but sure.” Vasilis said, and Mina did exactly that, allowing him to measure her.
The other building on the island was far more utilitarian than the main building. It was basically a building filled with dorm rooms meant mostly for sleeping, and a few spare rooms for whatever else, but it was what it needed to be. Currently Mina and Vasilis were in one of those rooms. Mina had been initially worried that Vasilis would ask her to strip down so he could measure her, but outside of asking her to take off her shoes he hadn’t.
“Alright, like I thought, you and Nik are basically the same size. I think I can repurpose some of the clothes he doesn’t like for you, and I can modify some of Iro’s older clothes that Agapi brought, if you’re ok with that?” Vasilis asked.
“Alright, as long as you wash them first.” Mina said, and Vasilis nodded.
“Obviously.”
Vasilis then went over to the desk in the room, jotted a few things down on a piece of paper, then pulled out some clothes and started working on them. There was a beat of silence where Mina wasn’t sure what to do, but that was quickly broken by Vasilis speaking up.
“So Mina, I know you haven’t been here long, but how are you liking things so far?” He asked.
“It’s been interesting. I never thought I’d be a chosen one, and this world is really beautiful.” Mina replied, and Vasilis nodded along.
“Yeah, it really is something special. Most other kingdoms in this world worship a god or goddess, some even multiple, and they always try to fashion their culture around embodying and honoring the deities they worship. But, in my mind, Chamiloran does it the best by far.” Vasilis said, clearly proud of his country.
His words did make Mina pause for a moment though. She’d gotten so wrapped up in everything that it hadn’t even occurred to her that other kingdoms would exist, never mind other gods and goddesses.
“There are other goddesses besides Uraina?” Mina asked.
“Naturally. There’s a god or goddess that represents just about everything in this world. From the sky, to fire, to even music. Is there only one goddess back in your world?” Vasilis asked in response.
Mina had to think for a moment with how to respond to that. She didn’t want to tell this guy that gods and goddesses probably didn’t exist at all in her world. It wasn’t impossible they did, there were a few religions that were dedicated enough that they might exist, and Mina even was friends with a Christian girl. But Mina herself didn’t believe in any, but she didn’t want to tell a guy that so blatantly believed in a goddess that.
“I never really paid much attention to stuff like that.” Mina noncommittally said after a moment’s though.
“Fair enough.” Vasilis replied, unbothered. “Still, anything interesting about your home that you’d like to share?”
“Like what?” Mina asked, and Vasilis shrugged.
“Anything really. What you do back home, what your life is like. Anything you find interesting back in your world that you think I’d find interesting.” Vasilis answered.
“Well, I’m still a kid, so what I do is go to school.” Mina remarked.
“You say that like it’s obvious, but that’s a lot better than most kids your age around here.” Vasilis replied.
“Oh, huh?”
…
“You’re not much of a talker, are you Mina.” Vasilis then remarked.
“Yeah… sorry.” Mina admitted.
“It’s ok. To be honest, I’m usually not a talker either.” Vasilis remarked. “I just figured I’d try talking to you to help pass the time while I worked. But silence works too.”
Mina didn’t say anything in response, just nodded and laid back on the bed she was sitting on, content to just relax in silence. The time slowly moved by as the only sound in the room was the quiet scritch and swoosh of Vasili’s needle working the cloth and thread, but both were content to let it remain that way until Vasilis was finally done.
“Alright, and that’s done.” Vasilis declared as he snipped one last thread.
“My clothes are ready?” Mina asked excitedly, and Vasilis nodded.
“Yep, just need you to try them on. I’ll step out of the room to give you some privacy.”
And Vasilis did just that. He gently laid her new clothes on the bed beside her, and stepped out the door, closing it behind him.
Mina didn’t hesitate to throw her new clothes on. Stripping out of her old clothes and throwing them to the side, she hurriedly but carefully put on her new outfit, having a bit more trouble with the cape than she expected. But once she was done, she turned to the mirror in the room, and couldn’t help but be amazed by herself.
For her top, Vasilis had given her a sleeveless sky blue shirt that went underneath a translucent light purple shirt with full length sleeves, the translucent purple mixing with the color of her skin and undershirt in a beautiful mix of colors. For her pants, she’d been given baggy purple pants that he’d had her tie up with a dark blue rope belt. then to finish off the outfit, she had a dark blue cape that went down to about the middle of her back.
“Well, do you like it?” Vasilis asked through the door.
“I love it.” Mina declared.
