Chapter 7:

Life on the sky range

Starlight: The Song of Home

Mina continued training her powers under Lefteris and Agapi’s watch for a couple hours, but outside of getting better with her aim and learning how much stamina her powers took (which was shockingly little), Mina wasn’t able to figure out anything else she could do with her powers. Still, she’d gone from nothing to something, and everyone was excited. Mina wanted nothing more than to train and train and train some more, learn everything that she could. But there was a limit to these things, a limit to how much one can and should train.

“Alright, that’s enough training for now.” Lefteris finally said.

“What? But I can still do more.” Mina insisted.

“Even if you think you can go for longer, doesn’t mean you should train for longer. There’s such a thing as over training.” Agapi said. “Besides, you still need to go get to know the other kids around here. Why don’t you go have some fun for now.”

Right, other people, that was a thing.

‘I was hoping they’d forget about that, but I guess all adults think talking to people is important.’ Mina thought disappointedly. Still, as she always did when an adult told her she needed to socialize, she put on a bright shy smile, and nodded.

“Alright. I was so wrapped up in learning how to use my powers that I kinda forgot about everyone. Still, I can’t wait to get to know everyone.” She said with pretend cheer.

“Heh, you’re not the only one.” Agapi said with a smile. “Both my kids, Iro and Panos, were very excited to meet you. Iro even got herself cleaned up nice this morning in anticipation.”

‘Because she was expecting me to be a boy, and wanted to look good for him. She really is just like Danis.’ Mina thought. Her heart then suddenly surged as she remembered her older sister, and she momentarily wondered if she’d ever see her again, before forcefully shaking the thought away. Sometimes chosen ones lost their family, but that’s only when they’re involved in the plot. For her chosen one story, she’s in a whole other world, so her family definitely won’t be involved. Meaning once everything is done she’ll go home and live with her family again.

“Something wrong Mina?” Agapi asked, surprising her out of her thoughts.

“Oh, uh, no, nothing’s wrong.” Mina quickly denied. “So, where is everyone?”

“Well, at this time, all 3 of them should be doing chores helping out in the farm area.” Lefteris said, and Mina’s excitement instantly skyrocketed. People, she could take them or leave them. But farm animals? She could not wait to spend time with the animals, especially these new other world farm animals.

Without waiting for another word, Mina ran for the farm area, leaving a chuckling Agapi and a bemused Lefteris behind her.

“There there, eat on up everyone.”

Bursting outside, Mina made a b-line to the farm area, and was immediately greeted by the sight of Natalia and Nik giving some fruit to a bunch of birds that she could only describe as fat hawks.

“Oh wow, what are these?” Mina asked, and both Natalia and Nik jumped in surprise, with Nik even pulling a knife out and pointing it at her before they realized it was just her.

“Oh goodness, you scared the daylights out of me coming out from nowhere like that.” Natalia exclaimed. Meanwhile Nik just scowled and sheathed his knife.

“Sorry.” Mina said, not at all sorry. “Anyways, what are those things?”

“Oh, these? They’re just myavgo. Have you never seen them before?” Natalia replied, and Mina shook her head.

“No, I don’t think birds like these exist back in my world. Can I pet them?” She asked.

“Right, forgot you were from another world for a bit.” Natalia said to herself. She then gave Mina a smile and reached out to hand her some fruit. “Sure. Just feed them fruit to help them relax around you. Don’t let them perch on you though, they’re heavier than they look.”

Mina nodded and eagerly took the fruit. She then cautiously approached the myavgo with her hand with the fruit held out in front of her. The birds eyed the stranger warily, but didn’t move away, allowing Mina to come close. Once she was close enough, Mina stopped and allowed the birds to approach the last little bit.

After a weighty pause, one brave bird made the first move and fluttered over to eat out of her palm. Mina smiled wide at this, and slowly raised her other hand to the bird’s back. The myavgo flinched and paused it's eating, but after a moment it continued, doing nothing about Mina’s other hand.

‘Oh wow, it feels so fluffy. Like a softer, poofier version of a hawk.’ Mina thought to herself as she stroked the bird.

She was so distracted by petting the myavgo that she was surprised when it hopped away, only then realizing that it had eaten all the fruit in her hand. Still, Mina couldn’t help but pout at the retreating myavgo, and Natalia chuckled at the sight.

“You like them huh? Well, how’s about you go help harvest some fruit for a bit, then you can bring some of the fruit back to feed them some more.” Natalia suggested, and Mina eagerly nodded.

“Ok, where should I go?” She asked, and Natalia pointed off to the side where Vasilis and Iro were.

“You can join my little bro and Iro over there in the orchard for now.” She said. “Just make sure your carful and don’t push yourself too hard. Those baskets can get pretty heavy a lot faster than you’d expect.

“I will, I’ll be back soon Miss.” Mina replied before quickly sprinting over, ignoring Nik glaring at her back.

She then quickly ran up to the fruit trees, slowing down before she reached Vasilis and Iro to take a look at the trees. Interestingly, there was a mix of different fruit trees in the orchard. She could recognize apples and lemons on the trees, but there were two fruits that she didn’t recognize. Curious to learn about them, she jogged the rest of the way to Vasilis to let him know she’d been sent to help, only to awkwardly realize she’d forgotten the other woman’s name. Oh well.

“Excuse me, Mr. Vasillis. Your older sister told me to come help you pick the fruit.” Mina called out. To her surprise, Vasilis let out a frustrated sigh when she said that. “Um, is something wrong?”

“Nothing, it’s nothing.” He replied. “It’s just that I am the older one, not her.”

“Huh?”

“Does who’s older really matter when you’re twins?” Iro asked, catching Mina by surprise with that particular piece of information, and Vasilis responded by glaring at her out of the corner of his eye.

“Yes, yes it very much does matter Iro. If anything, being a twin makes who’s older matter even more.” He replied.

“Then, why did she say you’re her ‘little bro’?” Mina asked.

“Because physically, she’s bigger than me. Something that didn’t matter to her until I decided to become a professional tailor, and then suddenly she takes every chance she gets to point it out.” Vasillis said with a level of frustration and exasperation that told of him having explained this a few dozen more times than he wanted to. “Anyways, you’d come over to help with picking, right?”

“Yeah, I’m supposed to help pick, and once we’re done I can go back and play with the myavgo more.” She said excitedly. “I’m also curious to learn about all the kinds of fruits you’ve got around here.”

“I see. In that case, Iro. Why don’t you explain to Mina all the different fruits we’ve got here, then put her on cleaning them while I go pick some more.” Vasilis said.

“Yes sir.” Iro said with a quick salute, before blushing in embarrassment at doing so. Forcing down her blush, she turned to Mina. “Alright, come on.”
