Chapter 26:
Starlight: The Song of Home
The mission was starting. The group had flown in on a group fiterolta which they had stashed a few blocks away, had decided on the meet up point, then split up to their different areas. Currently, Mina was with Iro on top of a building that let them just barely see the spot where Athan and Lefteris were supposed to break in from, and she was painfully nervous.
She’d been excited when the plan had first been made, then mad because Nik. But now that they were actually moving to act, she couldn’t help but doubt. It certainly didn’t help that the prison they were breaking into was in the middle of the city. She’d expected the prison to be on some scary island surrounded by fire, or something. She certainly wasn’t expecting a place that looked as nice as this place did.
Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder, and Mina looked up to see Iro looking down at her with concern.
“Hey, you good Mina?” Iro asked.
“I’m fine, just a bit anxious about my first mission.” Mina admitted, and Iro let out a humorless laugh.
“Yeah, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Still, look at the bright sides. We’re finally starting to make some big moves, and you’ll get to show off all that Uraina blessed power you’ve got.” Iro said with a playful nudge.
“Hmm, I guess. I’m glad I’m doing this alongside you instead of Nik.” Mina remarked, and Iro winced.
“Yeah… Nik isn’t exactly the best at teamwork. He’ll do what he’s told, but he doesn’t exactly have the patience for planning to any degree.” Iro remarked, and Mina nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, he’s really something alright. I honestly don’t know what you see in him.” Mina remarked, having already let Iro know about what she’d overheard earlier this morning. Iro blushed at her comment, though from Mina’s perspective it looked like more of an ashamed blush than a love blush like she’d seen on Danis.
“I’ll… I’ll be honest, not all that much.” She admitted. “He’s loyal, he’s cute, and he’s pretty strong for his age, but…”
“He’s a self-centered idiot, and you’re only dating him because he’s the only guy available while you’re waiting for a chance to trade up.” Mina stated, and Iro shamefully nodded.
“Yeah, you’ve got it spot on. Is it that obvious?” She asked. To her relief, Mina shook her head.
“No, I’ve just seen stuff like that from my older sister.” Mina explained. “Plus, after my ‘date’ with Nik, I’d be surprised if any girl could actually like him enough to seriously date him. Or guy for that matter.”
“Ok, I get where you’re coming from, but that’s a bit harsh don’t you think?” Iro said.
Before Mina could reply and vent about all the things that Nik did that annoyed her, an explosion went off, and the two girls looked down at the prison to see Athan and Lefteris had begun their assault.
“We’ll come back to this later, looks like the mission is starting.” Iro said, cutting off anything Mina might have said.
Down below, Mina got to get a good look at Athan and Lefteris going all out for the first time, and she was impressed. Athan fought like every bit the hero he acted. He flew and swept around the battlefield at incredible speeds, weaving between the guards like nothing. His sword glowed much like Nik’s daggers did, but rather than create uncontrolled explosions, Athan sent waves of power that took out multiple guards with each swing. He was like a force of nature, wiping out anyone that got in his way.
On the other hand, Lefteris was even more literal a force of nature. Much befitting his status as the group’s magic expert, Lefteris remained mostly stationary as he fought, but that didn’t make him any easier to hit. A glowing tornado surrounded him, blowing away any magic blasts or even people that tried to attack him directly, and all the while he sent off his own much more powerful air and lightning blasts back. Watching him fight, Mina wondered if he was actually Uraina’s chosen as opposed to her.
“Come on, you can be impressed with them later. Right now, we’ve got our own mission.” Iro said, pulling Mina from her revere.
Iro then picked Mina up and began jumping and gliding her way around to the opposite wall of the prison, her feet glowing much the same way the guards’ feet did. Sky boots is what Iro told mina the glowing feet trick was called.
Within moments the two of them were at their designated wall far away from the big show Athan and Lefteris were making. Once they arrived, Iro put down Mina and pulled out their 5 small Nik bombs, and Iro threw them at the wall one by one, detonating each one with a small sky blast, essentially tunnelling a smaller hole through the wall using smaller explosions.
With their path made, Mina and Iro made their way through, and after a quick look to make sure no one saw them, they pulled out the prison diagram Elias prepared.
“Alright, according to this there should be a maintenance tunnel that goes along behind the cells over here.” Iro said, and after a quick look they saw a small locked door.
“There it is, I’ll get it.” Mina said, pulling out another bomb, only for Iro to stop her with a hand on her shoulder.
“Hold on, we’ve only got a limited number of those, let’s save them for when we need them.”
“But, it’s locked. How are opening it without blowing it up?” Mina asked. Iro responded with a smirk, then pulled out one of her hair pins and used it to pick the lock.
“There we are, easy as pie. What? Your older sister hasn’t shown you how to pick locks yet?” Iro asked teasingly at Mina’s amazed look. Mina just shook her head in response. “Well, I guess you aren’t at the point of sneaking out your window to hang out with your friends late at night.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever get there, but can you teach me anyways?”
“Sure, but some other time. For now, lets focus on breaking these people out.”
