Chapter 45:

Mina Vs The Phoenix

Starlight: The Song of Home

Despite the confidence she showed Jordan, Mina was absolutely not ready to 1v1 the phoenix.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” She screamed as she ducked behind a pillar to avoid a wave of fire the phoenix sent at her with just a flap of it’s wing.

‘How the heck am I supposed to beat this thing?!’ She asked herself. ‘I’ve had chosen one powers for less than a week! How the heck am I supposed to solo the final boss already?!’

Still, despite her fear, she wasn’t about to just run and hide. Once the wave of flame passed by, she ducked out from behind her cover and began firing lightning arrows at it again, pumping as much power as she could into making the arrows as strong as possible while firing as many as possible. Each arrow hit the bird, either in its stomach, it’s face, or it’s wings, and they clearly stung. But it wasn’t enough, not enough to even dissuade it a bit as it decided to charge Mina and tackle her this time instead.

“OH NO NO NO NO NO!” Mina shouted as she used wind to boost herself out of the way of the bird just in time. By pure luck the wind also blocked the explosion of fire that exploded from the phoenix as it hit the ground.

Backing away to a safe distance, Mina turned to fire more arrows at the phoenix, but hesitated.

‘My shots are doing something, but that something is barely anything. Meanwhile if I get hit even once, that thing’s going to kill me!’ She thought to herself. ‘I… I can’t do this on my own. I’m not strong enough for this! I need help!’

In desperation, she looked over to the others, only to see them all caught up in their own fight. Fights they’re only taking on for the sake of protecting her. Fights they’re fighting to ensure she can have a chance in her fight so she can go home.

‘No, I can’t go to them for help. They’re counting on me to finish this myself, and I will!’ She thought as she turned back to the phoenix. But not entirely, her eyes lingered just a bit on Jordan, specifically on Jordan’s icy sword.

‘Well, I know how to make snow, so why not try to turn my arrows into ice.’ She thought to herself.

By that point the phoenix had turned back to her, and had its mouth open in preparation of a fire breath attack. Rather than run to dodge this time though, Mina took a breath and calmed herself, focusing on the cool energy of her snow and channeling it into her arrow like she did the lightning, making the air in her hands slow down and shrink. Then, as the phoenix brought its head down to let loose its fire, just before it released it’s roar, Mina let her arrow fly.

“Taste Yotin!” She cried out as the arrow flew, going straight into the phoenix’s mouth.

“Gakaw!” The phoenix choked as the ice arrow hit the back of its throat. The fire was instantly extinguished, and a tiny bit of frost crept out of its mouth momentarily before evaporating. Still, Mina saw it, and broke out into a bright smile.

“Yeah! Alright, I did it!” She exclaimed. The phoenix didn’t let her celebrate long though, as it instantly began glaring at her again, and raised it’s wing to send another wave of fire at her. Mina’s eyes widened in worry, but there was a glint of intrigue behind the fear. Rather than simply diving behind cover again, Mina instead shot an ice arrow along the ground and created an ice path for herself. She then used another burst of wind to send herself sliding down the path, which both worked and didn’t work. On one hand, it got her out of the way even quicker than just the air blast. On the other hand, she was completely out of control as she slid.

“WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH-omph.” She exclaimed as she slid uncontrolledly down the ice, and eventually fell over. She then looked over to see the phoenix coming after her with it’s flaming talons outstretched and sending flying fire slashes at her, forcing her to dive and roll out of the way.

“Oh no oh no! Ice skates ice skates, come on come on, YES!” She exclaimed as she quickly made some skates for herself. They weren’t the prettiest, but they worked, and it let her make another ice path and glide down it while still in control of herself, dodging out of the way of the phoenix’s talons just in time. Despite the danger of the situation though, she couldn’t help but smile at what she’d just done.

“How had I not thought of pulling an Elsa before? This is perfect!” she exclaimed as she began skating around the bird, firing even more arrows at it.
