Chapter 13:
I died as an NPC
Crimzon remembers his time playing Freedom and with his clan members. He tries to remember if he has ever met Mirai in his timeline. Nothing significant comes to mind. How did he meet Chaotic? All he can recall was an PVP (player versus player) team battle in which they were on the same team. Shortly after an overwhelming win, he received a friend request and briefly messaged until they spoke on the party line for the game. He recalls that the voice sounds familiar, but they would only talk about strategy during the game. Once the clan played together Chaotic seemed to open up more as more people in the chat began to talk with her more.
Flashbacks of the time together playing with the clan brings a smile to Crimzon’s face. He begins to reminisce of how they played together. Then he remembers Chaotic was their disruptor in the game. Her character was very fast and utilized defensive gear to draw the opposing team’s fire and was very capable of causing significant damage on her own. He keeps replaying the memories of gameplay he had with Chaotic and remembers they purchased some gear for Mirai.
Crimzon gets up and goes back to the living room and reviews the equipment. He grabs Mirai’s sling and empties the contents filled with digital files to study and ten metallic orbs in a sling. He lays out the digital files are all learning modules, all science based and projects. Curious about the orbs, he begins to pick one out of the sling belt and examines it.
“Becareful Crimzon, that will arm and instantly create a barrier.”
A soft, shaky voice comes from behind Crimzon as he turns around to see Mirai rubbing her eyes. Her hair messy in places, frizzled and standing up in the front. She tilts her head looking at Crimzon, “Wha?! Did I startle you? I’m sorry. I heard someone walking around and forgot I fell asleep with Irin.”
“What is this you purchased? I forgot to go over with you what you needed. I’m sorry Mirai.”
She smiles, “Oh, don’t worry about it. I decided to purchase these. They’re called Orb-10 and pretty basic skill set wise. You can program each one to have a different function that utilizes magnetism and energy. I’m no great with the hand-to-hand fighting techniques yet so I figured If I could utilize these, I could help incase anything happens.”
Crimzon closely examines once again, “Did you pick these out knowing you could program them?” He looks at Mirai with awe, “That’s very impressive Mirai!” He pats her on the head.
“Ah, really?! Thank you Crimzon! I was hoping we could program them together. We have ten to experiment with.”
“Okay. Let’s have a look.”
“Yay!”
Crimzon smiles at the overjoyed Mirai as she hugs him and grabs the manual for the Orb-10. They both sit down going through the program with the IRL system meticulously going through every possible feature. They’re experimenting with possible scenarios in which the orbs may need to change functions quickly from creating a barrier to going on the offensive.
“Hmmm. Mirai who taught you hand-to-hand fighting techniques?”
“That’s a silly question! Me of course.” Irin says boldly.
Irin’s hand pats Mirai’s head as she smiles and rubs Crimzon’s head with the other.
“What are you guys working on?”, Irin grabs a seat opposite of Crimzon and Mirai.
“Mirai used some of the funds to buy these, Orb-10. From the gears shop. They utilize magnetism and energy to operate. We were going over the functions. If you have any ideas this is what we have so far.”
Crimzon gives Irin the Radial and Irin pops up the window and enlarges it showing the functions they input into the system.
“Ah this thing is very basic but definitely overlooked. Good eyes Mirai. I didn’t know you could do so much with so little of something like this.”
“Thanks Irin! So what do you think?”
“Well, I think you have enough of the strategic qualities of Crimzon in it. How about we give it a little spice of Irin’s aggression.” Irin begins to grin mischievously.
Irin and Mirai begin to go over close fighting scenarios with the Orb-10 and assess the counter abilities. Crimzon gives his input on some distance ranged strategies. The three grind away at every input and scenario to programing the Orb-10 for Mirai. Engulfed with their work and giving each other feedback they never notice they had quest arrive. Quietly entering the living room Lori, Kana, Aiko, Shiori and Elsa observe the three working away at helping Mirai with her gear.
