Chapter 25:
Famous Gamer Girl is My Childhood Friend (Vol 1)
Winning the Mid-Season Invitational felt different from winning the World Championship. The first time, they were underdogs who had shocked the world. This time, they were champions who had been tested, broken, and reforged, and had proven that their victory was no fluke. They had faced down their inner demons, their oldest rivals, and the smartest minds in the game, and had come out on top by being unapologetically themselves.
They returned home not to a media firestorm, but to a quiet sense of satisfaction. The contracts were renewed, the sponsors were thrilled, and their place at the top of the Delta Strike world was secure. But more importantly, the fractures in their strange little family had healed, leaving behind scars that made their bond even stronger.
Yuki, having faced her past and played a crucial role in their European success, was finally at peace. The offers from other teams were still pouring in, more lucrative than ever, but she deleted them without a second thought. Her place was here.
Emi and Haru's rivalry had blossomed into a strange, highly effective partnership that terrified their opponents' IT departments. Mina and Kenji were the undisputed best entry-fragging duo in the world. Daichi, as always, was their silent, unmovable anchor, and Akiro was their heart, keeping them grounded amidst the chaos.
The final chapter of their season ended where it had all truly begun: the beach. There was no mandatory team-building exercise this time. They were there because they wanted to be, to celebrate not just a victory, but their survival. They played volleyball, swam, and got into a massive, childish water fight that Mina, predictably, won through sheer intimidation.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the water, Shouka and Kimi walked along the shoreline, hand in hand, a comfortable silence between them. The roar of the crowd felt a million miles away.
"You know," Kimi said, leaning her head on his shoulder. "For the first time in a long time, I'm not thinking about the next match."
"Me neither," Shouka replied. "I'm thinking about what comes after all the matches are over."
He stopped and turned to face her. For a terrifying second, Kimi thought he was about to kneel. Her heart did a frantic little flip. But instead of a ring box, Shouka pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket. He handed it to her.
She unfolded it. It wasn't a proposal. It was two, one-way plane tickets to a tiny, remote island in the Maldives, dated for the day after the next World Championship.
"It's a very small island," Shouka said, a nervous smile on his face. "Terrible internet connection. No cell service to speak of. Absolutely no PCs allowed." He took a breath. "I was thinking… how about a real vacation this time?"
Kimi looked from the tickets to his hopeful, anxious face. A wide, brilliant smile spread across hers. She threw her arms around his neck, her laughter mingling with the sound of the waves.
"That," she said, before kissing him deeply, "is the best strategy you've ever had, clumsy kid."
They stood there as the last sliver of sun dipped below the horizon, wrapped in each other's arms. The game was great. The championships were amazing. But this-this quiet promise of a future, together and at peace-was the ultimate prize. Their happy ending was just beginning.
