Chapter 3:
Three Worlds, One Choice
I am Haruto Kisaragi—or at least, I used to be.In this world, my name is Yokugama Yoku.“Yoku” is my given name, and “Gama” is my family name. I was shocked when I realized this world even uses surnames. My father works at some kind of academy, and this world doesn’t follow the usual fantasy setup of nobles and commoners. Honestly, that’s a relief. Otherwise, I’d have to deal with all the formalities and bowing.
From what I’ve learned through reading, this world’s power—Natura Ki—has a strange origin.Billions of years ago, a rare asteroid passed through the solar system and collided with Earth. It was made of quantum-enriched material, which caused a chain of quantum shifts in the planet’s biosphere. From those changes, a new form of energy was born—Natura Ki.
Over countless eons, this energy merged with the world itself. It became part of the air, the oceans, and every living being. Ancient civilizations discovered how to use it, shaping their lives and wars around its power. In short, it’s like magic—but not exactly.Magic flows through something like a “veil” inside the body, while Natura Ki flows through the brain, doing something still not fully understood. From what I can tell, humans in this world can use a much higher percentage of their brain compared to my old world. Maybe, billions of years ago, something—or someone—altered humanity to unlock that hidden potential.
“Yoku, what are you doing? You’re always reading books,” my mother said one morning.“Don’t read too much or you’ll have to wear lenses. I don’t want that to happen. Come outside.”“Okay, Mother.”
It’s been about six hundred years since people began developing machines and mechanical tools. But I’ve also learned that a group of kingdoms tried to stop technological progress. Strange, isn’t it? If humans have the knowledge, why do they let themselves be bound by royal power? Well… I’ll find out someday. For now, I’ll enjoy the day with my family—Mother, Father, my brothers, and my sisters.Time passed quickly. I’m fifteen now—old enough to join the same academy where my father works. I’m the second youngest among my siblings. My oldest brother is Yokumo, the second eldest is Kamo. Then come my sisters: Kumo, the eldest sister; Kissma, the second; and the youngest of all, Hima.
I once asked Mother how they decided who’s the eldest and who’s the youngest. She said, “The first baby who comes out is the eldest. The last is the youngest.”
I joked, “What if they all came out at the same time?”She scolded me for asking that during a family meeting. I thought being a child would protect me from getting scolded—but I was wrong.
Now that I’m fifteen, I can finally attend the academy. I’m excited to see what it looks like, what kind of students go there, and—most of all—how they use Natura Ki.
