Chapter 203:
Dark Crow Rising
"Alright, you three, down!" I call up to the aelenvari, other man and our foreign lady of the lightning skies. Collapsing onto my rear in a nice safe spot, the lot of them get down from the bag. A mixture of tired moans and gentle laughter leaving them and me as I turn up towards the night sky. Night time already.
Gods above and all of them at once that was a long road. One made all the longer by the people, vehicles and luggage that clogged up the road. So many people, so many. It had taken us the rest of the day just to get around the mountain and then far enough away from most of the crowds for us to safely separate.
"My love, are we going to rest here for the night or...?" Rose-sweerui asks, her tipped points stabbing along the crisp grasp. She sits down next to me, cuddling up the moment right after. My cloak serving her well as a blanket, however briefly it might be. I doubt she'll be going anywhere even if we're heading off. She 'loves' me too much.
"It's up to you lot. The quicker we get going the better off we will be, I say." I tell the lot of them as I send my head up and about to look at that stone giant behind us. Took us how long to get here, now it's going to take us barely less longer to climb this thing. What a mountain... Can't even just throw myself up this one. Seems like I've got to spider my way around the circumference for the sake of my own safety.
My hat falls off, and I bring my posture back to normal as Rose hands it back to me. She takes the moment to kiss my bare head, and she settles it back on. Reassuring me of its tight fit by wiggling it about. Though, while my mind is still reeling from the loss of my hat, perhaps I should consider something else. Should I take my mask and hat off for now?
Or, on the mountain, rather.
I might lose them if I keep them on climbing up that thing... And, well, frankly... Getting caught climbing is a no-win scenario anyway, so it's not like being barefaced will matter. I can only really think of this positively, as anything else is too despairing to consider. Everything needs to go perfect and then I can just slip the mask back on at the top. Yeah.
"There are places we can rest on along the road up, so let's get going." Baltanthan insists, interrupting my thoughts. He forces himself up onto his feet, yet, looking out across the crowd we will have to deal with... One has to wonder if they'll ever reach one of these places before they collapse from exhaustion. Or die of boredom for that matter.
"I take it all our money is with you three then?" I ask, setting myself free of the bag to begin a look of my luggage. However, it's a bit hard to do that with Einervaene still up there. Refusing to move at all and just laying still right up there.
Her head comes up, some loose hairs pressed into her skin, "Yeah... I put most of it with me and Baltanthan."
"I have some?" Rose-sweerui goes, her voice barely holding back all that confusion. And, I don't think it's because she acknowledges herself as fiscally irresponsible. However, when she pulls out some coins, she seems more so fascinated by them than anything.
"Yes, I gave you some because there just wasn't much room left in mine and his. But, well, I thought you might want to get something. You know, food, drink, that sort of stuff." Einervaene explains, her voice swishing between clear speech and mutters. Even a yawn breaks out as she shuffles across her impromptu bed.
"We have such items packed, Einervaene." Rose-sweerui shrugs, pulling out some such things. Mostly packed goods, which I will probably need to make sure I have plenty of. No room on a mountain slope for a fire, just whatever I can stuff into my mouth easily. Hm, that's another concern, actually... Will I starve to death climbing the mountain? I know I don't get hungry like I used to, but eating still helps regardless.
Who knows how lucky I will be with the shape of the mountain... Doesn't look like there's much going on, either. Those clouds don't look particularly safe, either. Vapooliar mentioned it all before, the snow-belt of the mountain.
"I know, I know. I just thought maybe you'd want something fresh? Back in Tryhpeltzweig, I had many talks with Founding-Lord Brewbrt, and he mentioned how he was quite fond of these places and all. I thought it would be nice to honour his sentiments." Einervaene explains rather sweetly as she at least tries to put on a proper posture of someone noble. Even if all she can manage is an awkward push-up.
"Well, if a human-petal is suggesting them... Especially one such as our prior host." Rose-sweerui says, a clear linger to her voice. She suddenly shakes her head, throwing all the money out of her bag. She hands it all off to Einervaene and Baltanthan, and our brows collectively cock. What in All-That-Remains is she doing?
"No, keep it!" Einervaene tries to say, only for Rose's dominating personality to overcome her. A hand up in the air is all it takes, a whip of tail following right after.
"No, I insist. It will be better for you to have it as you'll be more tolerant to whatever root serves us in those places." Rose insists, her answer not being all that forthcoming with how odd it just otherwise seems. A thoughtful noise comes out my throat alongside my chitters, and I watch Baltanthan take the money with no issue.
"Uh... Okay." Einervaene goes, taking the coins slowly as she keeps double-checking Rose's insistence.
