Chapter 6:
The Revenant: Neo Nexus War
The medical tent was filled with chaos.
Sirens blared. Medics shouted. The stench of disinfectant mixed with the heavy smell of blood.
On one of the stretchers, Mitsuki — the rescued adventurer — suddenly began to convulse violently.
Her back arched off the table as foam spilled from her mouth, her eyes rolling back into black voids.
“Quick! She’s seizing!”
“Hold her down—dammit, what’s happening? I’ve never seen anything like this before!”
The heart monitor went berserk — beeping faster and faster — until suddenly, a cold metallic voice cut through the noise.
“Everyone, get back.”
The room froze.
Soldiers turned toward the entrance.
There, standing in the doorway beneath the dim emergency lights, was a figure cloaked in black — a cracked white mask reflecting the red glow from its lenses.
“Revenant!?” one of the soldiers shouted, raising his rifle.
“You bastard—!”
But the man didn’t move his weapon. His tone was sharp and steady.
“Lower your guns. That woman can’t be saved.”
Captain Sena Aranai stormed in just then, pistol drawn.
“And what exactly do you mean by that, Revenant?”
He turned his gaze toward the trembling form on the table.
“She’s a Carrier.”
“You have ten seconds to end her before it’s too late.”
Sena’s eyes widened. “End her? You sound less like a man and more like a monster yourself.”
He tilted his head slightly.
“You’ll understand in a moment.”
Mitsuki’s screams grew louder, inhuman.
Her veins darkened, skin twisting under her flesh. The sound of bones cracking filled the air.
“Captain—look!”
Her arms burst open into grotesque limbs, black chitin covering her skin.
Her legs split and reshaped — eight spider-like limbs tore through the fabric of the stretcher.
“No... impossible...” Sena whispered.
Mitsuki’s head jerked violently, and then—
CRRRK—SPLAAAT!
Her skull split open, replaced by a monstrous spider’s head, mandibles dripping black ichor.
The soldiers screamed, stumbling backward as hundreds of Spider Beast larvae poured from her body — crawling, hissing, swarming.
“OPEN FIRE!”
Gunfire filled the tent — bullets riddling the air, tearing through bodies both human and beast.
The newborn creatures shrieked, climbing up walls, biting into flesh.
Sena raised her weapon, her hands shaking.
“I... I can’t get a clear shot—!”
And then — DOOOR!
A single gunshot silenced everything.
The Desert Eagle in the Revenant’s hand smoked gently as Mitsuki’s head exploded in a burst of black mist.
The Spider Beasts froze mid-motion. One by one, they shriveled and collapsed — lifeless.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The entire tent was painted in silence, broken only by Sena’s ragged breathing.
The Revenant holstered his pistol.
“I told you,” he said quietly. “She was already gone.”
Sena glared at him, lowering her gun but keeping her stance firm.
“You... saved us.”
“I didn’t do it for you.”
Before she could respond, static crackled through her earpiece.
“Captain! Captain Aranai! This is Private Miko from Delta! We’ve lost contact with Bravo Team!”
“What!?”
“Their last transmission mentioned... a giant serpentine Beast. They said—AAAH—” static
“Private? Private, respond!”
Sena turned to her squad. “Everyone, to positions! Bravo Team is under attack!”
Outside, the ground shook violently. Concrete split apart as a massive black-scaled serpent burst from beneath the asphalt, its red eyes burning with hatred.
The Snake Beast — an apex predator of the rift — roared, shaking the air itself.
One soldier screamed as its jaws clamped down on him, tearing his body in half.
Gunfire erupted everywhere, tracer rounds lighting the night like fireworks — but the bullets barely scratched its scales.
“Useless! It’s evolving!” Sena shouted.
She drew both of her Soul Blades, energy crackling along the edges.
Her boots splashed through blood and debris as she charged forward alone.
“Captain! Wait—!”
She didn’t listen.
Her twin blades sliced through the serpent’s outer scales, sparks flying. The creature hissed in fury, slamming its tail against the ground.
BRAAAGHHH!
The impact sent her crashing into a wall, blood splattering from her mouth.
“Captain!” her troops shouted.
The Snake Beast reared back, opening its jaws wide — ready to swallow her whole.
Sena’s trembling hand reached for a grenade at her belt.
“If it eats me... at least it’ll choke on this...” she whispered, pulling the pin.
But before she could throw it — a gloved hand snatched it from her.
A figure blurred past her, coat fluttering through the smoke.
“What—?”
The Revenant vaulted onto the serpent’s head, shoved the grenade into its maw, and leapt back.
“Swallow that.”
BOOOOOM!
The explosion tore through the creature’s skull — black blood raining across the battlefield as its massive body collapsed in violent spasms.
The shockwave blew back several soldiers, leaving nothing but silence and smoke in its wake.
When the dust cleared, Sena lay on the ground — broken, breathing heavily, her vision fading.
Through the haze, she saw him.
The Revenant — holding her in his arms, his mask cracked, red eyes glowing faintly.
For the first time, his voice softened.
“You’re safe now, Captain.”
Her eyes fluttered as consciousness slipped away.
The last thing she saw before darkness claimed her was his face — half-hidden behind the shattered mask, his black hair swaying in the rain.
And then — silence.
High above, thunder rolled once more over the city.
The war was far from over.
But for tonight,
The Revenant had saved the light.
