Chapter 74:

Chapter 74: An Accidental Encounter in Akihabara

I Didn't Know My Sister is a Famous Cosplayer

Akihabara on a Saturday is a dazzling, chaotic symphony of sights and sounds. The streets are a river of people, the buildings are plastered with giant anime characters, and the air hums with the cheerful jingles of arcade machines. For me and Kenji, it is heaven.

We spend an hour wandering through our favorite multi-story otaku department store, a place crammed from floor to ceiling with manga, artbooks, model kits, and character goods.

"My friend, I must answer the call of nature," Kenji announces dramatically after we have been there for a while. "Guard our potential purchases with your life. I shall return!" He dashes off in the direction of the restrooms.

I am left alone, a rare and precious moment of solitude. I am browsing a display of vintage figurines, a wave of nostalgia washing over me as I see characters from my childhood. My eyes land on a small, beautifully crafted figure of Princess Astra, the heroine of 'Starlight Paladin.' It is an old favorite, the show that Rina and I were obsessed with as kids.

I am reaching for the box when someone on the other side of the aisle, who is also reaching for a high shelf, gets jostled by a passing group. She lets out a small yelp, stumbles sideways, and bumps directly into me.

"Oh! I am so sorry!" a soft, shy voice says.

A small box tumbles from her grasp and clatters to the floor. I bend down to pick it up. My heart does a little jump. It is the exact same Princess Astra figurine I was just looking at.

"No problem, it was an accid-" I start to say, but I stop when I look up at her. She is short, with a cascade of long, beautiful, lavender-purple hair. Her face is delicate, almost doll-like, with large, expressive eyes. She looks foreign, but her features have a hint of something familiar. She is clutching a shopping basket, her expression one of mortified apology.

"You are a 'Starlight Paladin' fan?" I ask, my voice full of a genuine, nerdy excitement as I hand the box back to her.

Her eyes widen in surprise. She gives a quick, shy nod. Her Japanese is perfect, but tinged with a slight, unplaceable accent. "Y-yes. It is my favorite show from when I was a child."

"Mine too!" I say, a huge, unforced grin spreading across my face. "Nobody ever remembers it! The animation is a little dated, but the storytelling is just top-tier. The way they developed Astra's character arc from a sheltered princess to a true warrior queen was amazing."

I am rambling, a torrent of pure, unfiltered otaku passion pouring out of me. The girl is just staring at me, her initial shyness giving way to a small, hesitant smile. She is clearly overwhelmed by my sudden enthusiasm, but she also seems… charmed by it.

"I agree," she says softly. "Her final battle speech still gives me chills."

"Right?!" I say, my voice a little too loud. "The part where she says 'A star does not shine for itself, but to light the way for others'? So classic!"

We stand there for a few minutes, two strangers in a crowded store, completely lost in a shared moment of nostalgic joy. It is the easiest, most normal conversation I have had with a girl in a very long time. There is no teasing, no rivalry, no hidden meanings or forbidden lines. It is just… nice.

Eventually, she seems to remember where she is, and a blush creeps up her cheeks. "I- I should go pay for this," she says, clutching the figurine to her chest. "It was nice talking to you."

"You too," I say, still smiling.

She gives me one last, shy smile before hurrying off towards the cash registers. I watch her go, a lingering feeling of pleasant surprise warming my chest. A cute girl with purple hair who has excellent taste in vintage anime. What a nice coincidence. Kenji returns a moment later, completely oblivious to the fateful encounter he has just missed.
