Chapter 1:

Chapter 1 – The Guardian of the Mountain

Those Who Walk in the Middle of the Night!

In the heart of Java, there is a belief as old as the mountains themselves — that every mountain has its guardian.
Not of stone or soil, but of spirit.

For centuries, people have whispered about the rulers of the highlands: Jin Kings, unseen sovereigns who dwell in realms that overlap with ours. They say that every mountain in Indonesia is watched by such beings — ancient spirits who decide who may enter, and who may never return.

Among mountaineers, tales of disappearance are not uncommon. Some vanish without a trace; others return changed, speaking of sights no man should see. There are stories — told in hushed voices — of climbers being taken into the palace of the unseen, the Keraton Jin.

One man claimed to have been taken there. He said he was offered riches beyond measure, even the hand of a spirit bride. But he refused — again and again — until exhaustion claimed him. All he wanted was to return to the world of the living. When rescue teams found him the next morning, he was weak, trembling, and terrified. Later, his story spread across Indonesia, shared on one of the country’s most famous podcasts.

And then there is Mount Kawi — a mountain wrapped in shadow and silence.
Many believe it is one of the most haunted places in Java, a site where people still perform ancient rituals in search of wealth and favor. They bring offerings, sometimes more than they should. They whisper prayers not meant for human ears.

Those who have stood at the mountain’s base describe a weight in the air — as if unseen eyes are watching, judging, waiting.

To anyone who dares climb the sacred peaks of Indonesia, there is an old reminder whispered by the elders:

“Watch your manners and mind your words. You are never alone there.
The mountains have eyes — and you are only a guest in someone else’s home.”
