Chapter 4:
Send in the Heroes(?)
“Hey, Del, what’s got you in tizzy?”
Del was typing furiously on his keyboard.
“Del?” His face was inches away from the screen.
“It responded.” He sat back and for the first time in a long time looked Sign directly in the eye.
“What do you mean? What responded?”
“It.”
“It?” Sign took a look at Del’s monitor, “Holy fuck!”
“The dungeon reached out.” He rubbed his face.
“Is it-”
“No, it’s some kind of advanced automated system.”
“What triggered it?”
“One of the heroes from the latest batch. Check it.”
“That’s…wait, what the hell?”
“I made sure they couldn’t use stat modifiers. They can’t use the system, but one of them found a loophole.”
Sign pulled up the human’s profile which included his current stats.
“Blessings? Some rogue gods interfering? Those are some big names.”
“Right. They’re playing favorites. Now, he’s broken his restrictions and the system sees him as a threat. He’s not even human anymore.”
“That’s insane!”
“Now, the Dungeon is reaching out to negotiate. It wants to kick him but…”
“We can’t just send that back to his home world.”
“Right,” Del scooted back up, “So, we negotiate.”
Del typed back and forth with the AI on his main monitor while Sign continued scrolling through the human’s file.
“I think this goes beyond just rogue gods, there’s an admin code for a stat multiplier. Jesus. That’s crazy. You better cap this guy before he gains more levels.”
“If he can beat the dungeon-”
“It see like it’s not an ‘if’ the dungeon wouldn’t be crying “uncle” if it wasn’t feeling threatened, look, it’s about controlling the situation. You want him to stay on the dungeon planet and help out the others right? The dungeon could have easily sent out one of it’s boss monsters to take care of things but it reached out instead. It wants a fair game.”
“Fine” Del acquiesced.
<Restriction Accepted>
<Secondary Restriction Accepted>
“Good. It should be smooth sailing for a while. In the meantime, I’m gonna go look into something.”
“Okay.”
“See ya.”
Sign patted Del’s shoulder, and careful not to show how worried he was, exited the office.
