Chapter 9:

Chapter 9 — Shadows Beneath Havenbrook

Phantom Blade: Forging My Own Path In Another World

The quiet streets of Havenbrook were dimly lit by lanterns as the local guards made their patrols. The sound of their boots crunching against the cobblestone broke the silence of the night.Darius flagged them down, his voice steady but sharp. “Guards! This man tried to abduct a mage under our protection.”Two of the armored guards stepped forward, confusion flashing across their faces as they spotted the bound and bruised Thorne Malrec.“Who’s this?” one guard asked cautiously.“Name’s Thorne Malrec,” Darius said bluntly. “Trafficker. Deliver him to Guild Master Garrick Valen at the Adventurers’ Guild. Tell him exactly what happened — and make sure he doesn’t slip away. We’ll be back after we finish our quest to deal with this properly.”The guards exchanged glances, but the mention of Garrick’s name made them nod stiffly.“Yes, sir,” the lead guard said, hefting Thorne over his shoulder. As they disappeared into the night, Kai leaned against the inn’s wall, arms crossed and hood pulled low. He watched silently until they were out of sight.Darius stretched his arms and yawned. “Well, that’s one problem put on hold.”Kai’s gaze didn’t move. “…For now.”

By dawn, the sleepy mining village had come alive. The smell of freshly baked bread wafted from street vendors, and the ringing of hammers against steel echoed from the forges.Kai tucked his guild card beneath his hoodie as they walked toward the village outskirts. He couldn’t help but glance around, quietly observing.Havenbrook wasn’t what he expected. He’d read about it before arriving, but seeing it firsthand was different. There were dwarves everywhere, their short yet sturdy frames covered in soot and dust as they hauled carts of freshly mined mythril ore. Humans worked alongside them, their movements more hurried but equally coordinated. So it’s true… dwarves make up more than half the population here, Kai thought. Figures, considering this place thrives on mining. As they passed a group of dwarves arguing over the price of ore, Darius grinned and whispered, “Careful, Kai. Never get between a dwarf and his mithril profits. They’ll fight harder than any dragon.”Kai gave him a flat stare. “…Noted.”Lira chuckled softly, covering her mouth.

As they walked, Kai’s thoughts drifted. Over the years, he’d read countless books, scrolls, and old manuscripts in Old Man Ray’s shop whenever he wasn’t training. And now, wandering Havenbrook, he was reminded of just how vast this world truly was.He recalled what he’d learned:Elves — long-lived, elegant, and masters of elemental magic.Dwarves — exceptional smiths and miners, proud of their craftsmanship and stubborn to the bone.Demons and Devils — feared for their power and cunning, organized under rigid hierarchies ranging from Barons to Demon Royals.Dryads and Fairies — guardians of nature, often reclusive and rarely seen beyond enchanted forests.Demi-humans — beastkin, lizardfolk, and other hybrids scattered across the continent, some treated as equals, others persecuted.Vampires — divided by a strict bloodline hierarchy, their power scaling from Barons at the bottom to Royal Vampires at the top, rulers of hidden domains cloaked in shadow. It was a world filled with races, clans, and kingdoms, each with their own politics, strengths, and grudges. And yet… despite knowing all this, Kai trusted none of them. Especially not nobility.

As they reached the village gates, Darius adjusted the strap of his sword and grinned. “Alright, team. Orc Lord extermination quest, here we come.”Kai rolled his shoulders, flexing his hands casually. “Sounds messy.”“Messy’s an understatement,” Lira muttered, her staff glowing faintly as she checked its enchantments. “An Orc Lord leading a horde near a mithril mine could devastate the region if left unchecked.”Darius shrugged. “Then it’s a good thing they sent us.”Kai eyed him sideways. “Confident for someone who nearly fell off the roof last night.”“That was one time,” Darius shot back defensively. “And besides, I did catch your unconscious trafficker.”Lira smirked behind them. “He has a point, Kai.”Kai said nothing, hands tucked in his pockets, but there was the faintest curve at the corner of his lips.

Unbeknownst to them, in the heart of Havenbrook, Guild Master Garrick Valen stared at the restrained Thorne Malrec inside the guild’s holding cells. The grizzled man stroked his beard, his sharp eyes narrowing. “A trafficker… targeting a mage of Lira’s potential? Someone’s pulling strings.”He turned to his assistant. “Send a raven to headquarters in Valeforge. If nobles are involved, I want to know which ones.”

Chapter 9 End Hook: As Kai, Darius, and Lira left Havenbrook behind, the sun dipped low on the horizon, painting the sky in gold. They had no idea that in the shadows of power, their names were already being whispered… and Thorne Malrec’s capture was just the beginning.
