Chapter 71:
Sanctum of Life
Chapter 23 Brand New Earth
I
The night was coming, and they were really hungry right now.
They hadn’t eaten a normal meal for two days. Only the power from the Spring of Sylvana was stopping them from passing out because of Hunger.
“I am going to be starved to death right now!” exclaimed Stasha.
“So am I,” added Yanni, stroking his empty belly.
“Fine, I’ll hunt some rabbits and cook a dinner for you. Could you two set up a campfire for me?” asked Floria, smiling.
“For sure,” agreed Yanni.
Soon, Floria came back from hunting with three dead rabbits. She then roasted the rabbit over the campfire set up by Stasha and Yanni. After ten minutes, the dinner was ready.
Stasha eat a mouthful of rabbit.
“Wow! It’s delicious!” commented Stasha.
“Thank you,” expressed Floria.
“You future husband will be a lucky guy. You’re beautiful, sexy, you have red hair, and you can cook delicious foods …” joked Stasha.
“Yeah, for sure … she … no … he will … be lucky,” stuttered Floria, her face reddening.
Due to the Rain of Regrowth in the morning, the girls’ clothes and Yanni’s harness were soaked. Without Aisling’s magic, it would be difficult to dry them up. Therefore, the girls took off their clothes and dried them over a campfire. They didn’t mind the presence of Yanni.
“Yanni, your harness and loincloth were wet too. Do you want to dry them over the fire?” asked Floria.
“But … Fine …” Yanni’s face was turning red. He took off his harness and loincloth and put them over the improvised grill built by Floria.
Now, all three of them wore nothing now.
“Everything is difficult without Aisling,” sighed Yanni.
“Yeah,” agreed the girls.
If Aisling were here, she could dry those wearings with her magic and they wouldn’t need to wear nothing right now.
“Stasha, keep your eyes off me,” complaint Yanni.
“Sorry, it’s … You know … I’ll look at Floria instead,” apologized Stasha.
The three continued eating the dinner, and when they finished eating, the clothes of the girls, and the Yanni’s harness as well as loincloth had been dried by the campfire. They wore it, and started to look up to the sky, where stars were shining.
Because of the smoke emitted by factories, the atmosphere used to have been polluted and the stars used to be not able to be seen at night, but now, people could see the star sky once again:
Far from the galaxy, the splendid stars were shining, illuminating the violet sky. Beyond the firmament, the nebulae were like a painting on which the artist poured the pigment carelessly. No matter what had happened on earth, the universe itself wouldn’t be changed.
To the cosmos, everything that had happened on earth meant nothing. There were universes beyond this universe, as well as eternities beyond the eternity, in the aeons of which even death would die …
In mid-air, the fireflies were flying carefreely, humming in felicity.
“It was beautiful,” commented Stasha.
“I guess you want to write a song about it …” joked Floria.
“For sure I want … It’s really hard to believe that we have been fighting for this world for three years. Time flies fast,” sighed Stasha.
“Yeah, and I am afraid of our future. We have … We have lost a lot and been through a lot. I wish that we could live a happy life after this,” muttered Yanni, looking at the fireflies.
“We will. Don’t be afraid about the tomorrow. As long as we three are together, nothing will be able to break us,” encouraged Floria, putting her hand on her younger brother’s shoulder.
II
The next day. The three tamed three wild horses and set out towards Normania.
After four weeks, they arrived back at that city where Reauneian Academy of Elementalics were located.
They used to think that the people would live in felicity after the world was purified by Aisling.
However, the reality was a complete surprise to them.
The city was in chaos. Without elementalics, people could not work to earn money and buy food now because most of occupations were related to elementalics, and the order of this city stopped functioning.
Without the order, people began to fight with each other to rob foods. Laws could not control this city anymore, since the constables had lost elementalical power. Without laws, this city had become a hell on earth. People could kill and rob each other freely. There were corpses everywhere on the street.
“Why is the city like this …” muttered Yanni. His gut told him that what happened in this city was not an isolated phenomenon. It was universal. The same kind of chaos must be sweeping every city on this earth.
It suddenly downed on the three that though the Rain of Regrowth had revived the world of greenness and nature, it might be a doomsday to humans. The stable order that had been built by the governments collapsed within minutes.
“To be honest. Maybe the world will be a better place if it is … rule by Trigon,” sighed Stasha with self-mockery.
Some mobs saw the three and dashed towards them.
“Beautiful girls!” they shouted.
“That annoying,” complaint Floria.
She shot a stream of arrows towards the mobs. Screaming in pain, the mobs fell to the ground, their sinister blood dyed the ground scarlet.
“This city is not a place to dawdle. Let’s leave here,” urged Floria after decapacitating the mobs. Mercifully, she didn’t kill them,.
Quickly, the three walked towards the gate of the city. The air in this city was brimming with the smell of blood. A man without leg crawled to the front of the three with blood streaming all over his body. He screamed in irresistible agony.
“We shall … We shall save him,” muttered Yanni. However, the instant Yanni’s voice broke off, that man took his last breath and closed his eyes.
…
After the three left the city, they walked to the shore of Reauneia.
They made some kickboards with wood like last time and swam to Normania. The seawater was cold and they could see fishes swimming below them under the surface of the water.
This time, there were no mutant fishes because all the elementalical mutation had been purified by the Rain of Regrowth.
After swimming for about half an hour, continental Normania came into their sight. It was at dusk right now. The sun was sinking in the west, and soon the world was wrapped by the veil of night once again.
Even Normania looked alien to them right now too. It used to be a land dominated by brown grasses, but now everything was green.
“Finally, we’re back at Normania. We can speak Normanish freely with other people now,” Stasha breathed a sigh of relief.
Yanni was still thinking about the bloody scenes in the city.
“Is the chaos brought by us?” asked Yanni.
“It’s hard to say. I … I can’t explain,” stuttered Floria.
“For a race like humans, there are only freedom without felicity or felicity without freedom. It is said by a famous bard in the history,” drawled Stasha.
“Aren’t there a good ending for humans? Aisling said that she liked us humans, but in fact, humans are shit!” complaint Yanni.
“She has never liked humans. What she liked were us, I guess …” speculated Stasha.
III
In the next morning, the three arrived at Everlight Village.
Unlike the city, this village was a relatively peaceful place. However, the villagers seemed anxious and nervous when they saw the three.
Floria walked up to the front door of Mister Edwardson.
The door opened. It was Bianca.
“It’s you three …”
“Yeah, we’re here to tell you … that …” muttered Yanni.
“Something has happened to Marcus, right?” asked Bianca.
Yanni nodded.
“Marcus had been missing since two months ago. The whole Mildwind Town had been burnt to the ground. Nothing was left there. There are only dust, ashes and cremains. No one has found the corpse of Marcus, but without doubt, he has been killed …” continue Bianca emotionlessly.
“I’m sorry,” expressed Yanni.
“I only hope that this world will have no war and violence in the future … But now, things are getting worse and worse. Suddenly, all the grasses turn green and plants begin to grow. Cities are losing control and no laws are functioning right now. People begin to kill each other … Many people want to invade our village, because we have foods,” revealed Bianca.
“I’m sorry …” apologized Yanni, his face stiffened with confusion.
“It’s meaningless to say sorry right now … I have lost him … Life means nothing right now. I have no future … In fact, I decide to … Forget it …” breathed Bianca.
“What do you decide to do?” questioned Yanni.
Bianca didn’t say anything more. She slammed the door close.
After the conversation with Bianca, the three wondered aimlessly in the village.
“I am so tired,” muttered Yanni, sitting down on a big rock on the ground and burying her face inside her arms.
“Brother …” whispered Floria gently, caressing his left arm soothingly.
“Since we betrayed Master Mortis, we have been fighting to create a better world, but this world is still … No one is happy. Cities are in chaos and people are killing each other. They’re all done by us,” murmured Yanni.
“We just did what we must did. We couldn’t let Trigon rule this world, right? We just have chosen the lesser of two evils …” Floria reassured her.
“That’s true … But I still feel guilty,” sighed Yanni.
“There will be no utopia until the bestial parts of humans are cleared. Anyway, though we haven’t saved the humans, we have at least saved this planet from being abused and destroyed by Trigon,” replied Stasha.
“Yeah … We have restored the balance of this earth, though at the cost of the order of human societies …” consented Yanni.
While they were talking, they heard some villagers scream. They went towards the source of the scream to check what was happening.
It was a team of marauders trying to rob this village. Those marauders were rather strong, and the villagers were no match for them at all. They were brandishing their weapons in an attempt to kill the men and kill the women away,
“Stop!” shouted Floria. The three began to fight with the marauders. It was not a difficult task, since those marauders were only normal humans instead of enhanced ones like Hoemuo, Cheius, Tudius and Fungruus.
Obviously, the marauders were no match for the three who had defeated Master Mortis, Achnosiris and Fungruus. Soon, the fight finished and the marauders retreated from the village. After that , the villagers cheered in happiness.
Suddenly, they heard a scream.
A little girl ran towards the three, her face as pale as a corpse.
“It’s Bianca Edwardson. She has … She has died,” stuttered the little girl.
“The Marauders killed her?” questioned Floria.
“No, she hanged herself,” answered the girl, her voice trembling.
IV
The three had lost everything. They thought that they had saved this world, but in fact, they had made the world worse. Though they had restored the balance of the nature, they had brought chaos to human societies. Anyway, they had no better choice. They just chose the lesser of two evils.
They had lost Aisling too.
She was gone for good.
Luckily, they still had each other. They were like a family and they would never separate … And they still had a home.
One month later. At a cold dusk.
A familiar village came into their sight.
It was Starshine Village. It looked pretty familiar because it was surrounded by green grasses now.
“I can’t believe … We have arrived at Starshine Village. That means …” exclaimed Yanni excitedly.
“Soon we will arrive back at home,” Floria smiled.
“I’m missing mom. This journey had lasted nearly half a year” sighed Stasha.
The three walked to the front of Mister Berg’s house and knocked its door.
Mister Berg opened the door.
“It’s you three,” greeted Mister Berg, smiling.
“Aisling is gone …” revealed Yanni sadly.
“For now or forever?” asked Mister Berg.
“Forever,” answered Floria.
“I’m sorry … Anyhow, the greens have turned green. You three did it, right?” queried Mister Berg.
“Yeah, and we know that the human societies, especially cities, are in chaos now … It’s done by us too,” confessed Yanni.
“I know. You’ve just chosen the lesser of two evils, haven’t you?” speculated Mister Berg.
“That’s true,” Floria nodded.
“Don’t blame yourselves too much. I know that the world will be a better place in the future. Even a phoenix needs to burn herself before she gets a new life,” Mister Berg reassured them.
“Thank you, Mister Berg. You always support us,” expressed Floria gratefully.
“You’re the ones who can bring hope and future to this world,” drawled Mister Berg.
“But our story has ended. Aisling is gone and we’re too tired. We want to rest and live peacefully together ever after,” sighed Floria.
“That’s a pretty good ending for a story,” commented Mister Berg .
“Yep, it is,” agreed Floria.
As usual, the three ate the dinner in Mister Berg’s house. The house of Mister Berg was cozy and comfortable. Although it was pretty cold outside, Mister Berg’s hearth fire had warmed up the whole house.
The dinner made by Mister Berg was always delicious. However, they really had little appetite right now.
“I wish Aisling were with us right now,” breathed Yanni.
“Nearly every boy will go through lovesickness in his life, Yanni. In the future, you will find someone you love, and Aisling will be a beautiful memory,” said Mister Berg soothingly.
“No … No one can replace Aisling. She is .. She is unique. I am willing to do everything to reunite with her, because I … I love her so much, and this feeling is painful to me,” Yanni buried his face in his hands.
After the dinner, the three spent the night here.
The next morning, after a brief breakfast, the three set out towards the Camp of Wildshadow Clan.
“The doctor says that there are only two months left in my life,” revealed Mister Berg suddenly.
“What? Only two months? You’re going to …” whispered Yanni.
“Yeah … I will die soon … But finally I can die in a beautiful world, a world with stars, forests and fragrant flowers … A world without pollution. Thank you … Heroes,” breathed Mister Berg peacefully.
