Chapter 3:
A FIERY... DANCE ... ON ICE ...
six monthes passed in the sane unchanging rhythem .
school in the morning , work at the restaurant after , and skating practice at night .
But at home , the air grew heavier with each passing week .
his parent still refused to accept his dream .
what could you possibly gain from skating on ice ? his father snapped one evening .
A skill , hayato answered quiety .
confidence ... maybe even a chance to achieve something real .
And will that something pay your bills in the future ?
I'm working part time at the restaurant , he replied .
his father let out a bitter laugh
A part - time job ? that's not a future , hayato .
look around you .
sometimes I look at your little sister and ... regret bringing her into this life.
enough ! his mother shouted furious
she pulled her daughter away from the dinner table , refusing to hear another word .
days passed after that fight .
during one of hayato's practice sessions , a woman entered the rink.
she looked to be in her thirties - elegant , graceful , with a confident smile that caught everyone's attention.
the trainees begam whispering immediately
that's Kambina Yamada ... the fomous coach from tokyo !
hayato froze mid - spin , started by her presence , and lost his balance completely .
you're too impatient ! yamada's voice rang through the rink .
keep your composure , Be calm , not careless !
heart pounding , hayato approached her , trying to summon his courage .
Um ... do you know any female skaters without a partner ?
he asked
I'd like to try pair skating .
yamada raised an eyebrow , amused
why ask me ?
I thought ... maybe you'd know someon
he said , awkwardly scratching the back of his neck .
you seen well connected .
her smile faded into something sharper .
finding a partner isn't easy .
But it would be easier if you were a better skater .
coach sato , standing nearby , crossed his arms .
your movements are good hayato
he said
but you still need more work
hayato stayed quiet , but inside , he felt ready_more than ready .
still , the truth was harsh , skating wasn't like soccer , it didn't have the crowds , the fans , the endless players.
few people skated at all , and those who did wer always chasing the best partners-the tallest the strongest , the most escperienced .
even so , hayato didn't stop searching.
he visited every small rink he could find .
he talked to coaches and hobbyistes
the answers were always the same _ awkward smiles , polite refusals , and shaking heads .
weeks slipped
then one evening , hayato found himself sitting in the stands of a large skating arena during an exhibition show .
the lights glimmered across the ice as the performers danced under them , their movements elegant and free .
And them , out of the corner of his eye , he saw her
two seats away set a girl who instantly drew his gaze - not just because of her beauty , though her face was delicate and her eyez wide and luminous like polished pearls .
her short , silky brown hair caught the light , and her tall frame grave her a presence that seemed almost unreal .
for a moment , everything else disappeared .
the cheers , the music , the sound of blades on ice_gone
All he could hear was her voice ,
soft and distant , as she whispered to herself
see you next friday .
