Chapter 10:
Godless Moon
Edward put the book down, and just stood there on the chair for a while, trying to understand the situation. He and his mother were suffering from poverty, and his brother was a Knight. Apparently, Knights had a decent wage and depending on your rank or which group you served. Johann could have obviously helped out with the situation at home. He never received the messages from his mother, so he never knew about the situation back at home. Not only this, but recently, a man had apparently been stalking and harassing his mother as well. The most eerie part was the note at the bottom which read that someone was in the house. It was the last journal entry, and nothing was after it. Edward put the book down, hopped back on the floor, and left the room. He walked deeper into the dark hallway. The door had a name on it, it read “Johann’s Room”. Though it was made of wood, it was obvious someone put a lot of work into it. The design was beautiful.
As Edward was about to approach the door, a large sound was heard coming from the living room.
BOOM
It wasn’t an explosion, rather, something was broken. Someone forced their way in.
“THIS IS THE VILLAGE WATCHMEN, MS. MORRISON, ARE YOU THERE?”
Edward, due to his reflex, instantly rushed into his brother’s room, and closed the door quietly. He kneeled next to the door, palm on the door and closed his eyes. There were many footsteps. It wasn’t just one person. 3? Maybe 5? He couldn’t tell. He looked around and saw a chair conveniently placed in the middle of the room. He grabbed it and pushed it against the door, hopefully stopping them from finding him. He looked around, but there was nowhere to hide. Surprisingly, though this was his brother’s room, there was no furniture at all besides the chair. Not a table, closet, or even a bed. It was an empty room, the window seemed to be covered with a piece of cloth.
The footsteps outside were getting closer. He could hear them going into his room, then into his mother’s room. He was scared. What was he going to do? They tried to open the door, but because of the chair it was stuck.
“MA’AM! ARE YOU IN THERE? PLEASE, OPEN THIS DOOR! WE CAME HERE ON A REPORT THAT YOU WEREN’T SEEN FOR A WHILE! PLEASE, OPEN THIS DOOR!
The watchman exclaimed. His mother was missing? His mother had left her son, who she had loved dearly, with nothing? It was coming together. His mother had most probably stabbed him and fled, because she couldn’t deal with the poverty anymore. Johann, her other son, had given her no response or love, so she hated him perhaps. Kieran was a little boy who took from her every day. Her shares of food, the things she wanted but could never get because of Kieran, it made sense. Edward thought about this as they kept banging the door. But something didn’t quite fit the puzzle. Who was the man? What did he want? Was he her lover? No, she was afraid of him. What was up with the someone’s in the house?
As he kept thinking, though it was hard to hear,
“Move, let me deal with this. HUP!”
And in an instant, the door was blasted open. A huge gust of wind hit Edward hard, making him fall and tumble backwards. He got to one knee, and stood up. The gust of wind had knocked down the cloth that was covering the window. As he looked at the door, a large, bulky man stood there. He was tall, around 193 centimeters tall, he had brown, tidy hair. He wore some sort of leather armor. Around him were 3 other men, though tall and muscular as well, not as big as him.
As Edward recovered and regained his footing, the men were staring at something in disbelief. One of them looked away and threw up.
“What? What are they looking at?”
Edward looked behind him, but there was nothing there besides the window. He looked back at them, confused, when the tall man suddenly said as calmly as he could
“Kieran, come here, slowly. Don’t look around. Just- just come here, okay?.”
Edward was confused, and didn’t listen to him. He kept looking around, but there was nothing. As he paid closer attention to what one of the guards was looking at, he realized it was something above him. As he slowly started to look up, the tall man tried to run to him, but it was too late. Edward looked above him, and from there,
his mother stared back at him.
