Chapter 1:
Dear Diary, I Just Want A Picture Of The Moon
Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold.
"Okay."
Dear Diary,
Long time no see... or talk. Happy new year. I hope your Monday has been pleasant. I'll try to recap to the best of my ability while battling away slumber.
To begin...
Unfortunately the start of the new year for me began with a call from my supervisor for a team meeting, an in-person meeting. When I got a call at 5 in the morning from my co-worker, friend, and ex-roommate, Zee, I thought it was a prank like last year. At least that time, it was just telling me that pajamas were suddenly allowed for casual Fridays. This time... I'm not sure. She was reading the email from our supervisor, nickname J.D., with tired mumbles in-between.
"I'm surprised we're working on a holiday." I said afterwards as I head out my bedroom to the short hallway before making a right at the end of the hallway to the bathroom.
"I mean," Zee yawns out, "it probably isn't the first time."
Technically she's right but my mouth was full of toothpaste, sink water, and toothbrush while my stomach breakfast-less to respond in complete sentences or words.
She immediately offered to drive me to work since it was on the way from her partner's house where she was staying over for the holiday... or was for the holiday. Oh yeah, did I mention I don't have my car anymore? I'll tell you about it another time, but a hint I can give was that it was in last year - not related to the prank.
Anyways, it felt different as we were told that we would return to work on the day after the new year. Well, I guess today became a work day. The moment we all sat down in the meeting room, J.D. said many of us were going to be let go and we will know if we get called individually into his office.
Consider me and Zee the unlucky many. The many to return our work tech and our ID with lanyards. The many to be given our evaluations and exit interviews at the same time by our HR and admin who was also in the room. The many who had to pack up any personal belongings on our desks. The many to leave out the building.
The only positive experience I got out of this was hanging out with Zee who let me choose where we can eat for lunch to soak up our depression. Unfortunately we ended up eating our bánh canh giò heo tôm on a short brick wall on the right bordering my and my neighbor's yard instead because us whimpering and (almost) crying into our Vietnamese thick noodle soups with pork and shrimp was scaring the customers.
At the time of writing this, I'm currently back home with my siblings. Before this, Yenny and Thanh were both currently at work so Luna, who was leashed, accompanied us on the wall.
A happy chirp of a meow comes from the door. It is Luna who closes the door behind her as she struts onward to Bich who is sitting on her bed.
Okay, back to writing.
After eating and cleaning up, I asked her what she's gonna do now. She replied that she was going to move in officially with her partner. I congratulated them. The next set of news surprised me: she is going with her partner a city up north due to their new job. The second congratulations took a couple seconds longer to escape my lips. But I was very happy for them.
Before they left, they said they'll keep in touch and I said definitely. Deep down, I felt bad because I'm not a good texter or caller.
When my siblings returned home from work, I told them what happened and my siblings declared tonight "Leftover Pizza TV Night". I still didn't understand the love triangles in the drama we were binging. Maybe if I had a clearer mind, I probably would... probably.
After dinner, I wanted to try to take a photo of the Moon from my bedroom, something I used to do as a kid. No adjusting the resolution, just pure adrenaline to one-shot it. However just when I was gonna snap a pic, my phone shut down... probably because the battery died. So, no Moon pic tonight. On the plus side, I somehow managed to find a blank Kraft paper notebook that I bought impulsively years ago which is what I'm writing in right now.
Luna starts head-butting the journal away from Bich's grasps. Bich softly chuckles.
Sorry, I gotta go. Luna is scolding, I mean, gently telling me to sleep. I'll do as I am commanded, but I guess we're seeing each other more often. I'll have to start getting organized... with my life.
Good night.
Your long-lost friend,
Bich
Monday 20XX, 11 pm... probably.
