Chapter 18:
Orphan Survival
With knots in our stomachs, we hold our breath. My comrades wait for my signal before sprinting off at full speed. I give the signal. Although the clinic is only about 20 meters away from where we are, we run as fast as we can, stepping over dead bodies.
We arrive at the main entrance without any problems. With the door lying on the ground, we have instant access to the hallway.
_ Ayden: “ Before we retrieve anything, let's move away from the main entrance. No one must see us. ”
_ Taïga: “ Good idea. ”
_ Ayden: “ Someone needs to discreetly watch through a window to see if anyone is passing by. I just saw some stairs right next door. ”
_ Son: “ I'll take care of it. ”
_ Ayden: " Okay. We also need someone to find an emergency exit. “
_ Brent: “ I'll do it. ”
_ Ayden: “ Great, everyone else, let's collect all the bags we can find. ”
_ Shailly & Taïga: “ Okay! ”
Everyone carries out their task. Son climbs the wooden stairs, which are in poor condition, and finds himself in a room with two windows. Despite the onset of fog, there is good visibility. The front and side views are under control.
_ Ayden: “ That's what I thought. Inside, it's still in good condition. It's just the wooden stairs that leave something to be desired. ”
Brent is desperately looking for an escape route. Shailly, Taïga, and I gather the few bags scattered around different rooms, as well as on the table.
_ Brent: “ Damn, there's no way out of here. ”
_ Taïga: “ Shit! ”
I think hard, my chin resting on my hand.
_ Ayden: “ In that case, we'll have to get out through a window, no choice. ”
_ Shailly: “ But the windows on the ground floor are all boarded up. ”
_ Son: “ Hey guys! There's another room next to me with a window facing away from the clinic. ”
_ Ayden: “ Perfect, that's where we'll exit then. ”
_ Son: “ But it's quite high… ”
The small size of the clinic leaves no one indifferent. There is a 2.5-meter drop from the window to the floor.
_ Brent: “ That's not a problem. With my Source, I can pick you up from the floor. ”
I look at Brent, raising an eyebrow.
_ Ayden: “ Can you do that? ”
_ Brent: “ What do you take me for? Of course I can. ”
_ Ayden: “ Perfect. ”
Our bags are partially packed. Still no sign of anyone, and an emergency window has been located. Departure is imminent.
_ Ayden: “ Well, I think we've got most of our stuff. We can go. ”
_ Taïga: “ Pass me the bags, I'll take them upstairs. ”
_ Brent: “ Give me a bag too. ”
_ Ayden: “ Here you go. ”
Taïga and Brent climb the wooden stairs. When they reach the top floor, the stairs finally give way.
_ Ayden: “ Nothing broken? ”
_ Taïga: “ We're fine, but you can't go upstairs anymore. ”
_ Brent: “ First, we'll get the bags out through the back window, and then I'll come and get you. ”
_ Ayden: “ Thanks. ”
_ Brent: “ Alright, I'll go through the back window. ”
So the two of them go into the next room. Right after that, something catches my attention.
_ Ayden: “ By the way, where's Shailly? ”
_ Son: “ Guys, we're screwed! ” he said in a low voice.
_ Ayden: “ Huh? Tell me. ”
_ Son: “ I can see someone through the window heading towards us! With the fog, I can't see their face yet, but… ”
_ Ayden: “ Damn! We have to get out of here fast! ”
Son's face falls.
_ Son: “ It's... the mummy with the bob hat over there. ”
