Chapter 1:

The First Verse

Atop the World's Smallest Stage

So... I'm falling, the Creator thought with a familiar, absentminded look on her face. After all, it wasn't a particularly unusual occurrence. It had just happened the other day for the umpteenth time. One moment, she stared into space within a rather over-the-top prison cell, thinking about her next performance. The next, she was falling, well had fallen, off the top of the Tokyo Skytree, passing by the steel girders, the base, and even the small patch of ground keeping it floating in the sky.

Of course, the cause and culprit was obvious; she cast a teleportation spell, plain and simple. What else would make you simply pop into existence? Sure, she didn't understand how to actually use the spell or why it just activated on its own at random. And sure, she might've been thinking about this exact situation before she teleported. But that was her everyday life, one full of inconveniences to the average person.

However, for her, it was a spontaneous stroke of brilliance. An opportunity firing all the neurons in her brain at warp speed. The perfect chance to come up with something new.

So, she began to sing.

"What's going on, I can't see the ground."

"I'm falling to death in this strange, small town."

...hmm. Can Sumida really be considered a town though?  The ever-growing metropolis beneath her sprawled endlessly, lit by morning sun peaking above the horizon. Splotches of green and yellow danced between the rows of gray, housing its million residents. The Tobu Skytree line passed by on her left as it flew up to the tower's entrance, carrying a host of puzzled passengers wondering what just rocketed by. She could even make out the expanded Oyokogawa Sinsui Park, looking like a brownish patch beneath her. In all respects, there was way too much for it to be a town, but 'ground' didn't rhyme with 'city', so she just kept going. A minor rewrite could always come later.

"I don't know even know who I really am."

"What keeps me here when I'm stuck all again?"

A line that made little sense, but that's what happened when adrenaline rushed through the brain. Even now, she was trying to find the answers to those questions, not that she really cared to look for them. It was more of a 'I'll stumble into it eventually' type of deal, and if she didn't, then that was that.

"Everything blurs as I fall through the sky."

"My memories just keep on going by."

Eh, 'going' doesn't make much sense. It doesn't evoke the sense of imminent death, she reasoned. After all, falling from this height was fatal for the average person. In that situation, your life would flash before your eyes, memories flooding your brain. 'Flooding by'. My memories just keep on flooding by... yeah. I like that!

"The parachute fails as I pull the chord."

"So what keeps me going to move on forward?"

She paused for a second, thinking over what she spitballed. It's a start, but I'm really diggin' it. Needs a bit more polish though, plus a second and third chorus. Oh well, I'll figure out later, she thought, looking down at the rapidly approaching ground -- a mediocre canvas to decorate with herself.

Well, I can splat, but let's try this first.

With a snap of her fingers, her body came to a stop immediately, hovering a few centimeters from the ground. Those nearby fell to the ground while the ones further away flinched, rubbing their eyes. Touching down, she did a quick twirl to make sure nothing was broken.

"Success!" she yelled with a peace sign, grinning like a research fanatic. That worked perfectly! The air absorbed more of an impact than I thought it would. Solidifying my internal organs is still necessary though; otherwise, the shockwave will kill me. But I wonder what happens if I weaken the spell a tiny bit. I just need to jump off the Skytree again--

Clack. The sound of metal rang as a cufflink closed around her pumped out wrist. On the other end was a police officer, slightly out of breath, wearing an exasperated expression. Small tufts of hair stuck to his other hand from a bit of stress pulling.

"H-hello officer," she greeted, followed by a brief, "I didn't do anything wrong this time."

"Oh really? Then what do you call this?" he intoned.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," she quickly responded. The people who fell down were only surprised and not knocked over from the pressure shockwave she generated. Those rubbing their eyes were only tired and not cleaning the dirt from the following dust cloud. That crack underneath her feet? Always been there. No further questions.

"..." As expected, the officer was not amused.

"So can you please let me go?" she said with puppy dog eyes. The officer gave a smile of his own.

"Absolutely not."
