Chapter 220:
Dark Crow Rising
"How many eggs do they have...?" I find myself asking, putting these consistently bothersome thoughts out there. I push up from my bed, creaking it rather than risking the chance of breaking it. A small thing that barely helps deal with the simmering annoyance otherwise dominating my thoughts. It repeats on me, dullishly thudding throughout my room.
Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter...
"Gods above... At least I can chase birds off..." I sigh as my exhaustion catches up with me at the worst moment. And it's not even the kind I can solve by getting to sleep, anyway. It's all just so exhausting. People, life, everything.
I stare at the glass, smudged beyond relief with egg yolk and white. It's ironic, really, I ain't seeing that much white. Lots of yellowy colours. But no white at all.
It's not even like I can tell them to stop or leave me alone. It will only end up with having more rocks thrown at me. My problems aren't even just the eggs and potential rocks. Someone's set up a device that's protected from all the egg gunk... And it keeps whispering insults through my window. Not so loud to break through the thudding window, but I can pick up on it.
So I guess having the eggs stop won't help at all...
"Either way... How did they even find out about which room is mine? It's practically premeditated." I go, otherwise fully awake at this point with all the positives and negatives that come with it. And, worst of all, it's the dead of night. Well, dead of night for any normal person not throwing an endless supply of eggs...
Frihdeicalkbr insisted, he gave his word about it. No one, absolutely *no one,* was told about which room I was assigned. He explained so clearly that only the staff knew and... Oh.
Now I feel stupid, thinking about it now. It's so clear who let the information out. The very people who are working hand-in-hand with the security forces who spent all day trying to shoot me. Of the teachers did it. One of the teachers who want to keep their students informed about where the monster is, was and will be...
Gods above, what a fourteen-headed pain in my backside.
Either way, I can't sleep like this. I thought I might be able to get on through it, given the history with sleeping that I have. Years of living in Tobaballe aside and dealing with all the comforts of a sleep pod during a busy industrial shift and that. Nevermind how noisy it got during my travels to Tryhpeltzweig and here. Even Rose-sweerui's flower wasn't all that quiet, really, especially with her around.
Yet, apparently, despite my experience, it's not to be. I can't just close my eyes and ignore the sounds. I feel so exhausted, but clearly, it's the wrong kind of tired. And I've not a clue if it will ever become the right one, not here, not now.
Especially with how uncomfortable this bed feels by circumstance. I don't want to be in bed when I really should be- Another egg hits the window. I walk away, heading the way of the door with my eyes closed and a palm over my face.
"Maybe I will just go to Rose-sweerui's room. At least the sound diminishes a fair amount even a couple steps away." I say, going back to the bed to gather up my pillows and blanket.
Heading back to the door, I try to open it to no avail. I shrug and shift the contents of my arms about, freeing up a claw. I try again, and it still refuses to open. I can't even find a handle or a lock and...
"Oh, right..." I let out as I recall the details I somehow magically forgot in an afternoon. Frihdeicalkbr went over this. The door was changed over the few days I was being processed. It's entirely locked on the outside and extensively a chore at that.
I'm stuck in here until someone finds the will to...
"Or not... Guess I'm staying here for the night." I mutter, heading back to the offending window to look up and out at the moonlit sky. A sigh breaks my wayward thoughts apart, and I look for the nearest light switch. The amusement I felt earlier today... Yesterday...?
Whatever... The amusement doesn't come to me this time. That curiosity is gone now. It's just a light switch. One that unveils a whole selection of beds that I had also nearly forgotten about...
"Shit..." I breathe through clenched teeth, otherwise getting to work to find the means to dull the noise. Maybe using the blankets from the other beds will help right now? There's a good handful of empty beds and desks in here.
This whole building is made up of rooms upon rooms of bedrooms like this. Each one's probably intended to house four or so students each. It's practically a cavern compared to all my old bedrooms. Not quite the same as what Brewbrt's estate had, but still something impressive nonetheless for what is meant to be a school.
This whole room alone is a house. A house meant for so many yet occupied by one... A monstrous one that is an osibindah. An osibindah locked in his room all night.
I look to the doors and then back to the windows as another egg splatters across it. My arms lose their strength and drop as I find myself with no strength to keep my head high. A cold air somehow blows against me, and another sigh breaks my lips open. It drives me to bend over and pick everything up, and I throw it into the corner, flicking the switch again to put me back in the dark.
Forcing my way into my pile, I wrap my ears up and thud against the floor as I stare out at the window... Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter. Crack, splatter.
My nostrils flare, and I tighten my grip on the blankets, pulling them closer, practically choking my ears shut.
