Chapter 37:

Extra chapter: Surgery on the go, milkshake on the side

Uncanny Valley

"Kid, a local exhibition is gonna happen. Extra credits if you helped with the organizing."

"Sure, teach."

"Good, now all you need is enough credits to cover another course and you will pass this term unscathed." He paced around the room, messing with some paper like a detective chasing vital evidence.

The student's eye caught a glimpse of notes, names of some classmates that quit because of Andre and internships and training opportunities for them.

"I'll figure out the rest. I'll be fine."

"Will you?"

"Why won't I?"

"Kid, you have eye bags. You can't convince me it's not getting to you." He sighed with worry.

"That's not the reason for them."

"Then what is it?"

The worry and firmness of the teacher were pressing, and the truth was unbelievable.

"I'm a late bloomer. Bones hurt so I can't sleep."

Half a truth is still a truth.

"...Oh."

The worried but sane conversation turned into a full blown nagging session, telling him to go to the hospital and get a checkup.

"No matter what that's abnormal, your unofficial brother is a surgeon, right? Talk to him."

He wished he could turn invisible and fly away.

"I can't. My milk tooth will fall out any minute. He's gonna laugh till he needs resuscitation."

"That would be an exaggeration."

"Well I laughed too hard at him at last year's loser anniversary."

He continued explaining the loser anniversary and how his brother almost split his skull open trying to flirt with a woman.

Yamada looked at him like he was a student trying to convince him their bird ate their report.

"Don't play with me! This is bogus! No one would allocate a day to make fun of their brother!"

"He…he didn't do anything crazy, he just tripped on nothing while approaching her..." He was barely holding back a laugh. Still in that lane till he felt a presence behind him.

"...He's right behind me, isn't he?" He looked with utter betrayal at Yamada.

"Look kid, I was worried so I called home."

"How much have you heard?" Ryu asked.

"Let's just say teacher is invited to the next loser anniversary clear your agenda ☆~" The nameless surgeon put his arm on Ryu's shoulder with a mischievous smile.

"Judas." Ryu cursed Yamada as he was dragged away.

At the hospital Ryu was in the bed with hexagonal shaped patches on his arms.

His brother's head was buried in the blanket, laughing so hard one would think he was sobbing.

Meanwhile Ryu was focusing on erasing any traces of his blob biology.

'It should be fine, I got a full 26 hours of surgery before. If I'm in a human form they can't detect my other side.' He reasoned.

'They're not Lisa after all, they can't tell.'

"Hello there, do you know what version of anesthesia you got in your major surgery?" The doctor asked.

Ryu looked at his bro, who stopped laughing in a second.

"Vergaxan 720, 90 mg." The answer cleared the doctor's confusion.

'An L4 emergency in the farthest countryside in the land eleven years ago. Makes sense they would use that.'

"So you can be cool sometimes."

"Talk big while you can, I'm booking a venue for the anniversary." The big brother played with the container with a tooth inside.

Long story short, the doctor explained to him how the anesthesia he had is so strong that his body didn't get rid of it completely, causing him the pain.

"There are clusters of the substance residue near your lymph, your body cleansed the majority of the substance so the clusters could dissolve with time, but there's a chance the clusters turn into stones. Surgery now might be a good choice."

"Would anesthesia even work on me?"

"That's up to the surgeon."

"Some Valium sedation will suffice. Let's do the vision correction while we're at it, Valium will work on you once so let's avoid any future larger doses."

"You gonna do it.." The doctor asked, hiding the confusion.

"Yeah, his file is under me anyway."

'And I get to see Jueno explode when I ask for an OR ASAP...oh wait, this is an outpatient procedure.'

The doctor watched as they went to admission.

"Don't worry Doc. He's young but he's our ace, he got the privilege to do a double operation." The seasoned nurse told her puzzled face.

"No... can one perform on their family members?"

"Well some people have the guts. Oh yeah, he did his father's heart adhesion removal in the past."

'Surgeons in the general hospital are something else.' The new doctor thought to herself.

Ryu woke up after the surgery, he wasn't fully asleep to begin with, he's more dazed after the surgeries actually.

"You did very well! How are we feeling?" The nurse encouraged, a bottle with a straw and murky orange liquid in her hands.

'Here comes the hate crime.' He looked at the bottle, an after-surgery antibiotic bitter drink with quenchy and other junk. And someone had the brilliant idea to make it taste like orange milkshake.

'Who's the psycho that invented orange milkshake? I'm better off not knowing.'

"You're the one that made the pies your brother brought to the hospital potluck? They were amazing! We all loved it." The nurse buttered him up, the bottle getting closer to him.

"What can I say? I'm effortlessly popular, unlike others." He looked at his brother, who's filling files on the huge hexagono.

He walked to him, pinched his nose, took the bottle and made him drink it in one gulp.

"Thanks."

"Surgery failed though, you're gonna die."

"Bummer."

"That's not true... Surg, I know he's your brother, but please stop breaking patient communication protocols!"

The nurse sighed. And he spent the night at his brother's.
