Chapter 13:
Because Of You, I've...
The following week (approximately ten days after the incident). Mid-afternoon. The sterile, brightly lit recovery wing of the city hospital.
(Rin walks down the long, familiar hospital corridor. Her stride is no longer hesitant; it is steady, worn smooth by the past ten days of her new routine. She carries Yuta's bag, now containing his logic textbook and a change of clothes—a silent promise of his return.)
[NARRATION - KARUIZAWA RIN]
The first week was all about logistics. Explaining my absences to my parents and teachers—I told them I was helping a sick classmate. Explaining my time here—I told his parents he was my tutor, and I owed him this. They let me stay, accepting the lie because my presence seemed to give them strength.
[NARRATION - KARUIZAWA RIN]
I spent the last ten days reading his logic book and talking to a silent wall. I reviewed complex deduction problems, solved proofs, and whispered his name. I was earning my second chance, proving that the person he tried to save was worthy of the sacrifice. I was waiting for him to keep his promise from the dream: "I know, I know. Thank you."
(She reaches Yuta's private room, the door she has slid open and closed countless times. She takes a deep breath, preparing for the usual cold, sterile silence. She slides the door open and steps inside.)
(Rin does not look up immediately. Her gaze is focused on her feet as she performs the ritual: she takes off her shoes and places them neatly against the wall, preparing for her long, silent vigil. The customary greeting is already forming on her lips.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
(Softly, automatically) Hey, Yuta. I'm here. I finished the third chapter, and—
(The words die in her throat. A sound she hasn't heard in two weeks—a sound of confusion and recognition—cuts through the sterile silence.)
HASHIMURA YUTA (O.S.)
..Rin?
(Rin's head snaps up, her eyes flying to the bed. The image is immediate and shocking. Yuta is no longer motionless. He is sitting upright, propped against several pillows, his expression groggy but undeniably conscious. He is looking directly at her, his eyes clear and making direct eye contact.)
(Rin stands frozen, one socked foot raised, one hand still near her shoe. The terror from the bridge gives way to an overwhelming, disbelieving flood of relief. The tears she thought she had exhausted immediately well up.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
(A choked whisper of profound relief) Yuta!
(Rin’s state of shock lasts only a second. The sight of him alive, upright, and conscious shatters all her lingering restraint. She quickly kicks off her shoes and lunges toward the bed with a fierce, choked cry of relief.)
(She slams into Yuta in a tight, profound, intimate hug. Her small body is pressed against his chest, careful of his bandages but desperate for contact. The sheer relief of the moment overrides all the boundaries she once fought for.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
(Sobbing into his shoulder, her voice muffled and trembling) Yuta! Yuta! You're back! I missed you! I misssseeedd you!
(She snuggles herself into his chest like a little enthusiastic kid to their parent, seeking warmth and security. Yuta, despite his injuries, immediately returns the intimacy, hugging her tightly with his good arm, tears pricking his own eyes.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
(Softly, holding her close) I missed you too, Rin.
(Rin pulls back slightly, her hands framing his bandaged face, frantic to confirm his reality.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
The dream! Did you—did you hear me in the white void? Did you come to find me?
(Yuta gives her a gentle, sorrowful look.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
(Shaking his head slightly) I don't remember any dream, Rin. I'm sorry.
(Rin’s disappointment is instantaneous, but she dismisses it just as quickly. The past doesn't matter; the present does.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
(Beaming through her tears) It's fine! It kept me going! But, now that you're here, we can spend every day together!
(Yuta is momentarily taken aback by the radical change in her personality—the girl with immense hatred replaced by a girl with immense intimacy and love. He watches her face, trying to reconcile the two people.)
(Rin, seeing his confusion, is driven to repeat the solemn promise she made over his unconscious body, wanting him to know that the restart is real.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
Yuta! Do you wanna know what I said?
(Without awaiting his answer, she answers herself, her voice ringing with firm conviction.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
I said I wouldn't leave you. I wouldn't let you disappear. You told me you would earn it. Now I'm telling you: you have to come back and teach me how to trust again. We have a clean slate, and I'm not going to ruin it!
(A big, genuine smug smile flashes on her face—a smile of triumph over their shared trauma.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
(He lets out a small, tired chuckle, the sound raspy. He gently takes her hand.) Thank you, Rin. I... I hated myself so much that evening on the bridge. I hated the pain I caused you. I hated that my attempts to fix things only forced you to be cruel to me again.
(He leans closer, his expression suddenly intense and focused.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
Then you screamed my name. And you told me you'd fall with me.
(He raises his voice slightly, the revelation raw and honest.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
At that moment, Rin, I realized how important you truly were to me. Not as a pawn, or a project, or a victim. But as the core of my morality. I didn't want to see you get hurt because I tried to hurt myself. I realized that my survival was necessary for your sanity.
(Rin's eyes widen, processing the confession. He didn't survive for himself; he survived for her.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
(Noticing her catching his hints, he finishes the thought tenderly.) So yes, Rin. You made me realize how important you were to me, and how important I was to you. You are a part of my heart.
(He reaches up and gently touches Rin's soft cheeks, his thumb brushing away her happy tears.)
HASHIMURA YUTA
I won't ever try to hurt us, ever again. From now on, I am yours.
(Rin's tears of happiness start flowing out at his powerful 'confession.' She closes her eyes and smiles, the light from the window reflecting off his glistening, damp brows—a perfect parallel to her own vigil.)
KARUIZAWA RIN
Then I am yours too!
(She leans in and kisses him softly on the forehead, right over the bandage, sealing their clean slate and the commitment to their intertwined, fragile future.)
