Chapter 3:

Day 3: Near the Threshold

Deranged Martyrs

It was cleaning day.

Sally tied her hair up and began organizing her apartment.
The place was spacious, but it only held a few essentials:
just enough for the kitchen, just enough for laundry.

The rest of the space was taken up by:
Posters.
Frames.
Collectible figures.
Plushies.

The living room and bedroom had that warmth of someone who keeps their passions close at hand.
Natural light came in generously, as if the apartment had been built to breathe with it.

The PC, the speakers, and the monitor had their own small sanctuary.

The terrace, on the other hand, had a different aesthetic:
green, fresh, almost rural.
A quiet corner suspended above the city.

When she finished cleaning, she stopped.
Looked around.
Then gave herself a small pat on the shoulder.

“Well done,” she whispered, allowing herself a small smile.

She went up to the terrace.
The view was wide. Warm. Sincere.
The sky felt especially high that day.

Sometimes I wonder what it feels like to fly, she thought.
To get lost up there.
Among those intense colors.
Vibrant.
As if something were waiting for me… near the horizon.

The wind shifted her bangs, as if answering.

She checked her phone.
Several notifications from the group.

Sally opened the chat.
The discussions hadn’t progressed much since the last conversation.

Until someone wrote:

I found something that might be important.
I posted it in the group.
Go take a look.

It was a video.

A man spoke about astral projection.
A technique meant to induce a “separation” of the soul from the body.

Its basis was interesting… but inconclusive.
Maybe nonsense.
Maybe something more.

The group began debating.
Some said it made sense.
Others didn’t see anything unusual.

Until the person who posted it sent another video.
One of himself.

In the video, he sat in front of the camera.
He greeted the viewers.
Sat still.
Relaxed his body and mind.
Took a deep breath.

For a moment,
faint flickers of energy shimmered around him.
Distorting.
As if trying to rise beyond his body.

Then it disappeared,
dissipating into the air.

The comments began.

We actually progressed.
This is real evidence.
We need a provisional conclusion.

Everyone was excited.

From what they had seen so far, the possibilities narrowed to five ideas:
the soul, the heart, the brain, death, or dreams.

Sally finally wrote:

Maybe the body, mind, and soul are linked to this energy.
Remember the astral projection.
And remember the previous videos.
Sometimes the energy manifests involuntarily…
and other times, voluntarily.
But when it’s voluntary… it takes more effort.

There was silence.
Then, messages of agreement.

They accepted the idea as a point to move forward from.
They proposed practicing the technique.
Continuing the research.

Sally turned off her phone.

She closed her eyes.
Breathed softly.
Closed her fist.
Then relaxed it, slowly.

And reached her hand toward the sky,
as if trying to touch the sunset.
As if she could reach it.

Each day…
a little closer to magic.
