Chapter 16:
A-Academy: Five Celestial Guardians
Aihana and Akihiro sensed it long before they could see it.
A subtle distortion in the alley’s air, shadows clinging too long to the walls, a faint hum that didn’t belong to any city noise.
Aihana turned, her voice barely a breath.
“Akihiro…?”
The air thickened—not with magic, not with light—just pressure.
Pure, crushing weight pushed into the narrow space, folding the alley in on itself.
Akihiro’s gaze sharpened. Every shift of his stance was precise, calculated—small movements no ordinary human would instinctively make.
Then it emerged.
A smear of black fog crawled along the asphalt, reversing gravity as it climbed the walls. The mist gathered, solidifying into a tall, lean figure. Darkness pooled at its feet, trailing like broken wings melting into the pavement.
A low, amused hum slithered from the figure.
“Well. Isn’t this… interesting…”
Aihana’s knees trembled. Akihiro was already in front of her, his arm sweeping out like an unspoken command: stay back.
He was calm. Alert. Focused.
No human instinct could explain the lethal readiness radiating from him.
The shadow figure tilted its head, chuckling like a blade sliding across glass.
“I didn’t expect to run into you here,” it said, smooth and poisonous. “Akihiro.”
Aihana froze.
He said his name—not casually, not like a friend.
Something ancient lingered beneath the tone, older than the streets themselves.
Akihiro’s jaw tightened, voice steady.
“You’re far from your domain, Ravukaru.”
The name slid across the alley like oil. Shadows thickened, writhing alive at the demon’s feet.
“Just taking a small… walk,” Ravukaru murmured. “And imagine my surprise—finding you guarding a human girl.”
Aihana’s chest tightened. Human girl.
The emphasis was deliberate. A challenge.
Akihiro shifted instantly, positioning himself between her and the darkness.
“Don’t look at her.”
Ravukaru’s grin stretched wider. The mist behind him writhed, forming claws—long, serpentine, snapping toward Akihiro.
“Oho. Possessive, are we?”
Aihana’s fingers clutched the back of his shirt. His body tensed—not from her touch, but from anticipation. Every muscle coiled, ready.
“Akihiro… what is this? Who… what is he?” she whispered.
He didn’t look back.
“Aihana. Stay behind me.”
“But—”
“Please.”
The weight of that word made her flinch.
Ravukaru laughed softly, cruelty threading his voice.
“My, my… how fragile she must be, if even you feel the need to shield her.”
The alley vibrated under the pressure of their power. Shadows clawed at the walls, darkness pressing outward.
Ravukaru stepped closer. The mist thickened, curling, slashing.
“So… why don’t we see which of us is stronger?”
Aihana’s pulse spiked. Something inside her recognized the danger before her thoughts could catch up.
Akihiro shifted again, a movement so subtle anyone else would miss it. Aihana felt it—a quiet surge of energy trailing off his body.
No fear.
No hesitation.
Just lethal readiness.
Ravukaru’s lips twisted.
“You’re not running this time, Akihiro.”
The shadow lunged, exploding forward like living ink.
“Akihiro!” Aihana cried.
The darkness struck—
—but Akihiro’s light erupted first.
Golden-white energy burst outward, consuming the mist, reshaping the alley in searing brilliance. Heat kissed her skin, wind shoved against her as the shockwave tore through the street.
When the glare faded, Akihiro stood unchanged in posture—
but unmistakably no longer human.
His shirt hung in scorched strips, glowing veins of light pulsing beneath his skin. His hair lifted as if an unseen breeze moved through it. Luminous wings—faintly veined and powerful—unfolded behind him.
Aihana nearly collapsed.
“W-what…?”
His emerald eyes stayed locked on Ravukaru.
Ravukaru moved like smoke, dissolving and reappearing across the alley. Tendrils clawed the walls, debris twisted into a dark storm.
Akihiro summoned his sword of light. The blade danced in response, slicing through the attacks. Sparks hissed as shadow met light. He moved with surgical precision—each step controlled, each strike deliberate.
Chaos erupted.
Shadows writhed like serpents, claws slashed, neon signs flickered violently overhead. Ravukaru hurled an entire wall of shadows; trash bins tumbled toward Akihiro. He sidestepped, slashing through the mass and sending a wave of golden light tearing down the alley.
“You’re clever, Akihiro,” Ravukaru hissed, summoning a dozen clawed arms from smoke. “But can you hold this?”
Shadows coalesced into a vortex, sucking the air from the alley. Akihiro planted his feet, wings flaring, sword raised like a beacon. Light rippled outward, forcing the vortex to hesitate—its tendrils recoiling.
Ravukaru attacked again, smashing massive shadow spears into the ground. Pavement cracked. Akihiro spun, deflecting them, sending radiant energy blasting upward like a flare. Shadows recoiled, reformed, tested him from every angle.
He advanced, sword glowing brighter, wings shielding Aihana, carving a corridor of pure light between her and the demon. Each strike pushed Ravukaru back.
Aihana watched, breathless, frozen. Sparks flew; shadows shrieked; dust spiraled in wild patterns. The alley was alive with light and darkness tearing at each other.
Then the shadows surged.
They slipped past Akihiro’s barrier for one terrifying second.
It flickered—shivered—
—and collapsed.
Aihana choked as darkness brushed her skin.
“You’re the fifth Guardian, aren’t you?” Ravukaru murmured, voice venomous.
Akihiro’s aura flared violently.
“Let her go.”
Ravukaru’s grin sharpened.
“I’m the one who decides now. You’ve lost, Akihiro.”
Shadows wrapped around Aihana like ink in water. Cold. Suffocating. She gasped, struggling, panic rising fast.
Akihiro’s eyes snapped to her—and for the first time, fear flashed beneath his control.
Only for a heartbeat.
But it was real.
He stepped forward, wings flaring—then froze as the shadows tightened around her throat.
Ravukaru laughed quietly.
“Oh… you do care for her.”
Aihana clawed at the darkness, tears burning her eyes, helpless and terrified.
The tendril around her shoulder tightened.
Ravukaru raised a hand, shadows coiling like serpents, ready to strike at Akihiro.
Aihana’s heart shattered.
Akihiro was trying to protect her.
He would let himself be destroyed to save her.
And she couldn’t—she wouldn’t—let that happen.
Her chest surged. Energy roared awake inside her, wild and desperate.
She clenched her eyes shut—
—
and let go.
—
Light burst from her like a newborn star, rose-gold and fierce. The alley shook. Metal gutters rattled. The air convulsed, bending around the sheer force of her awakening.
Shadows shrieked, peeling from her skin as if burned. Ravukaru’s mist writhed violently, tearing apart.
He staggered, eyes widening in disbelief.
His grip snapped open.
“No—!” he snarled, claws reaching—
—but the light swallowed him whole.
Dark mist whipped around him, desperate to resist, but her power overwhelmed it.
Ravukaru’s gaze locked onto Akihiro for one final, venomous heartbeat—a silent promise this wasn’t over—
and then he vanished.
Not destroyed.
Not defeated.
Simply gone—pulled back into his dimension.
Aihana collapsed instantly.
Akihiro moved faster than thought, his sword vanished, catching her before she hit the ground. His hands trembled—just barely—as he cradled her. His eyes were wild with fear he refused to show outwardly.
Her breath was uneven. Her body shivered. The echo of her power lingered like static in the air.
Akihiro pulled her closer, jaw tight, wings closing around her protectively.
His forehead touched hers, barely.
“I’m right here. I won’t leave you.”
The battle was over for now.
But the awakening had begun.
