Chapter 20:

What is the difference between me and God?

The Isekai Illusion Theory

A few minutes later:
Wow, I didn't even have to die.
I'm alive and well.

But at the same time, I knew it wouldn't be a problem if I died.
Am I abusing my power? Probably, but whatever.
Could I be trapped inside my own body, being controlled by an illusion? Be trapped inside the illusion? I prefer not to find out...

Looking back, if God existed in the real world, what would change about Him for me now?
I have also created a world, with several people living their own lives, giving them free will.
What really changes?

Am I also an illusion of God?

Maybe I am developing a God complex, but am I wrong? I am literally the God of this world.

Well, thinking about it, maybe I'm more like Jesus. I'm living with my creations, without being omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient—
W-What the hell am I talking about? Is this some kind of blasphemy?!
I haven't even investigated the religion of this world yet...

But am I really wrong to think this way? What changes between us?

Oh, I'm becoming a philosopher or something...
But I want to figure this out.

"THEO!!"

"A-AH?! E-EDWARD?!"

F-Fuck! I was so focused on my thoughts that I hadn't even paid attention to his voice.

"Wow dude..." Edward said calmly, while looking at his own hands with a bit of fear and disgust. "I really killed a child... So simply..."

"I-I mean... It was the body of a child, n-not a child itself, right?" I had already returned to my normal state...

"Yeah, I know but—"

"WHAT WAS THAT!?!"

Behind Edward, three girls were running toward us.
As soon as they got close, I saw a wooden staff almost hitting me—I even had to lean back a bit.

"WAS THAT BLACK MAGIC!? OR ARE YOU ALSO A PARASITE!?"

A-Ah shit... The only thing I said before meeting Melina was for them to stay hidden, and for Edward to stay alert.
Besides convincing them to let me go, obviously.

Ruma stopped next to Mochiko, pointing her finger at my equally surprised face, her finger almost touching my forehead:

"YEAH YOU NEED TO TELL US WHAT YOU TOLD HER!"

Mochiko even went so far as to poke my face with her staff:

"SPEAK NOW!! T-H-E-O-D-O-R-E!!!"

S-SHIT!! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO SAY NOW!?
I-I CAN'T TELL THEM THE TRUTH!!

W-What should I say? I-I have no idea... WHAT EXCUSE CAN I MAKE?!

"I-I uh... I-I... I-I made her realize that she was wrong this whole time, a-and that she actually—"

"Y-YOU'RE ACTUALLY A PARASITE TOO!? PARASITE THEODORE MORETTI!?"

Ruma agreed with Mochiko, nodding as well:

"THAT'S ACTUALLY A GOOD REASON!! IT WOULD EXPLAIN A LOT!"

H-HOW DID THEY COME TO THAT CONCLUSION?!

"Hm..." Edward murmured. "I don't think we should really care, we should probably just be glad to be alive..."

Y-YES!! THANK YOU!

Ruma calmed down a bit. "Hm, yeah that's fair... He doesn't seem to be able to count either."

Mochiko looked at me, still very suspicious, but then suddenly looked away. "Yeah... If it weren't for him we'd be dead, so it kind of doesn't matter..."

Thank God—

"STILL, THAT WAS VERY SUS!!!"

Well, they are right to think so...

"Heh, that was so cool, dude!" Edward said while putting his arm around my neck and grinning.

"I don't know what you did, but you saved us, so thanks! I can see why Anfang accepted you in the group now!"

H-He is praising me? S-Smiling?
W-What should I say?

"A-Ah a-ah... T-Thank—"

"No actually, you know what, I can pay for your dinner tonight! You deserve it, bro."

D-Dinner? S-Shit, why am I red?! W-What, am I gay now?!
N-No, I-I mean his arm is around me, w-why does he look so casual about it—

Because he probably is...
Maybe that's how friends work.

Friend...

Can I consider this one of them now?

I really don't know...
I don't even know if I want to, because they're just illusions...

But that was the reason I came here, damn it! That's why I created this world!

...These illusions are really confusing me.

Mochiko simply pointed ahead, her face scrunching up a bit in disgust and pity.

"Hey, should we do something with those bodies?"

Ruma: "No... I mean, the city guards should be coming any moment, it's their job to take care of this. And we're criminals, right?"

Edward then let go of me, walking forward toward the crowd that was already beginning to dissipate, but still with a big smile.

"Well then, after this heroic deed of mine, it's time to meet Anfang at the tavern, right? LET'S GO—"

Mochiko & Ruma: "YOU DIDN'T DO EVERYTHING!!"

And so, the three of them began to walk forward while arguing.

Edward: "B-But I finished the job!"

Ruma: "You would’ve died without him!"

Mochiko: "Yeah! And if I wasn't there giving... uh... emotional support! You—"

Edward: "SHUT UP!! YOU WERE SCARED THE WHOLE TIME!!"

Oh, haha, how funny to see them.
Well, just go after them and—

"Very interesting..."

...

"GYAHHHHHHH!!!!! GOTA!?"

O-OH SHIT!! I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT HER!!
SHIT! SHE IS GOING TO KILL ME!! SHE'S GOING TO THINK I'M EVEN MORE SUSPECT! AND INVESTIGATE ME TO THE END OF HELL!
W-WHAT SHOULD I SAY?! SHE'S NOT GOING TO IGNORE ME LIKE THE OTHERS—"

"Thank you."

...

"...uh?"

Gota said those words, with a small smile on her face.

"They are right, you saved my life, I have to thank you."

W-Wow... I-I was not expecting this...

"W-Well uhm... Y-You're welcome..."

Her face slowly turned a bit more serious, the goth started to talk more slowly.

"What you did was very interesting, and kinda dumb if your goal was to look less suspicious..."

I know that...

"You really do have some power, don't you? Maybe it involves talking, it's the only possible explanation for what happened.
So yes, you lied to me and you have some secret power, as I always thought."

Shit... I-I'm gonna die again...

"You're a very suspicious guy, your actions are very strange, it seems like there's something bigger involved, maybe you really are an infiltrator..."

She started taking steps toward the guys now far from us, without looking at me.

"I don't understand anything about you—what you want, your intentions—but..."

She suddenly stopped, slowly showing me her face: a smirk, an honest one of deep gratitude.

"Thank you. Regardless of what you want, I only find myself alive because of you, so I can't try to kill you again, for now."

And then, she simply started walking forward again:

"Come on, let's go... They're waiting for us."

...

S-So, she thinks I'm suspicious, that I’m hiding something, but now she has a sense of duty toward me.
Well, that's something good, I guess.

Well, I can't judge what she did. Seeing from her point of view, all her actions made sense—it's normal for her to see me that way.

I don't think she's a bad person, just someone... who cares about the safety of her friends.

It seems my job is to transform her into another lovely tsundere for my harem?

Haha, what a hard job I have...
