Chapter 7:

Think Akane

Return Of The Lightning God

"I'm a what?" Akane blinked.
"An idiot," replied Raijin.
"No, no, no. Like seriously, what do you mean I'm THE Lightning God?" Akane raised his hands exaggeratedly.
People across the street watched him talk to himself, making hand gestures and palming his face.
A couple walked past him and looked back. "He must be having a hard time with work," the man said.
"No, I think his girlfriend left him. Broken relationships make people that way too," his lady chimed.
Akane stopped in his tracks, turned to them as they walked away and then sighed. "I don't even know what to make out of this new part of my life."
… …
Two hours later.
The sun had fully set and Akane was was at home—in the kitchen actually, trying to get something to eat.
He opened the mini fridge but all that he found were a two coffee cups, water and some yoghurt. "Man, I'm so cooked. I got to pay the landlady and clear my other debts. If I get paid, they money's all gone the next day."
He groaned and took out the yoghurt, slamming the fridge's door shut and resting on it. He slid down and opened it.
"Pay's coming in tomorrow," Raijin spoke.
"Yeah, I know. I'm just looking at how miserable my life is." Akane gave a strained smile, taking the yoghurt to his mouth.
"Don't drink that," Raijin said.
"Why? That's all there is," Akane shrugged, chugging the yoghurt.
He immediately spat it out, coughing. He quickly took out some water and gurgled before spitting in the sink, trying to take out the taste of the yoghurt.
"What the hell?" He said, his voice hoarse as he took up the yoghurts carton, scanning it until he found the expiry date.
It had been bad for about a month and two weeks now.
"Told you not to drink it," Raijin commented.
"Saying 'hey it's expired' wasn't going to kill you, was it?" Akane complained.
Raijin went silent for a bit, before saying, "Hey it's expired."
Akane but his hands on his waist and looked up. He took a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. "You have a serious problem," he said.
Moments after cleaning up the kitchen, Akane put on his hoodie and decided to go get something.
Not that he had money. He was just going to someone he was sure he could borrow from, even if he had to beg a little… or maybe a lot.
He stood in front of a small convenience store and exhaled. "Here goes." He opened the door and walked towards the counter. "Heyyy, Fuyoko-san," Akane said with a wide grin and a cheerful energy.
All an act to lighten the mood before he explains his reason for coming here.
The lady who sat behind the counter was a chubby redhead, scrolling through her phone and immediately she heard his voice she threw an empty can that went for his head.
Akane ducked just in time and turned to see the can. "That was close," he chuckled nervously. Turning, a bottle of water hit him on the head and he fell. "Oww," he groaned.
"What do you want, you idiot?" Fuyoko said, still not looking up.
"See, she knows you're an idiot too," Raijin mocked.
"You better be here to pay your debts," Fuyoko added. "Say shit about wanting to take stuff on credit again and I'll kill you." She finally looked up as he helped himself up, his back turned to her.
"Ah, come on, we can talk this through," Akane replied, rubbing his forehead.
Fuyoko noticed his blue hair and got a little surprised. "Wow, why'd you dye your hair?"
"Uh, just felt like it," Akane muttered before turning to her.
Her eyes widened even more as she looked at his face and figure even behind the hoodie, her cheeks flushing pink. She averted her gaze, looking down at her phone. "Wh-what happened to you? Why do you look like that?"
Akane blinked, understanding what was happening but his mind was still elsewhere. His stomach growled, begging him to skip any questions or formalities and go straight to the point.
"I just… see, that's not why I'm here actually," Akane gave a nervous smile, now walking to a stop in front of the counter.
That was enough to snap her out of her flustered state. Her icy tone returned. "What?"
Akane grinned even wider, knowing she already caught on but was just asking. "Please, I'll pay in full this time around."
"Yeah, what of the other half of your last pay?" She frowned. "Akane look, that job's killing you and you know it. It's not like the pay's over-the-top big and all that. I don't know what you've been doing that made your looks… change. Maybe you're sleeping better or maybe you're into some kind of drugs—"
"No no no, not at all. I'm not into drugs." Akane interrupted.
"Whatever man, just look at your life." She leaned back on her seat.
Akane remained quiet for a while. "But… but if I leave that what am I going to do? What else am I good at?"
"Exactly," Fuyoko snapped her fingers. "That question is what you always ask yourself. Have ever tried looking for something else you're good at, or do you just sit and be like 'If I leave the computer, I'm cooked.' Which is it?"
Silence.
He couldn't give an answer, because she wasn't wrong. He never really searched for something else he could do. He really was an idiot.
"Sometimes, parasites disguise themselves as chances. Learn to open your eyes when you realize it, not after the pain gets unbearable. You've still got time." Fuyoko shrugged and put a finger to her head. "Think Akane. You may not necessarily have to drop the programming or whatever it's called. Opportunities are everywhere, so get out of your shell and look for something that can work."
Akane nodded, her words sinking into his head. "Thanks Fuyoko-san."
She didn't reply, just stared at him for a while before saying, "Take three cartons of instant ramen and maybe two drinks."
"No, no. One will do, I just—" Akane shook his head, but she interrupted.
"Since when did I start deciding what you'll take? I'm giving it to you for… I'm not saying the word. You know what I'm talking about," Fuyoko waved a dismissive hand.
Akane grinned. "Th-thank you so much. I don't know how I can repay you."
"You could pay for it then," she said. But when she looked up, he was gone. "And make sure the next time you step foot here, you're coming to complete your last payment!" She yelled.
Akane was already taking what she said he should.
A few minutes later, Akane walked by the sidewalk with his ramen and then his mind seized. He stopped in place, his eyes glowing a bright blue as images flashed across his mind.
After about thirty seconds his senses returned. "What was that?" He asked Raijin.
"I just got some of my memory back," Raijin replied. "Ah, now you can see the mortal world in my view, as well as yours."
Akane wanted to ask another question but his stomach told him to leave the chat for later.
Akane kept on walking when he realized he was being followed by two men. Far ahead of him was another man standing still.
Instinctively, Akane's eyes glowed and he could see a pale red aura emanating from the man ahead. Same with the two behind him.
No one else had it, so this was strange indeed.
He ducked into the next alley, hoping to lose them, but after a few steps his heart sank—it was a dead end. "Shit." He cursed and then turned, seeing the three men run in as well before slowing down, knowing they've got him cornered.
Akane breathed in then out and dropped his food gently on an empty box and turned to them taking a fighting stance. "Come on now."
