Chapter 40:

Volatile Human

Pax; Unliving

“Oh? What's it to ya’? Are you gonna arrest me?”

A maniacal grin spread across Pax’s face as he spoke. The two knights immediately sensed the danger in Pax’s words and Instinctively put their hand on their swords. The atmosphere was tense as time stood still at the table. Then the grin on Pax’s face melted as a different person spoke words from his mouth.

“Ah, sorry about that, what I meant to say is that I'm just stopping by this town to make some money for the rest of my journey. I don't plan to cause any harm or do anything illegal.”

Pax scooped the rest of his omelet into his mouth and got up as the knights sat speechless.

“Thanks for the meal,” said Pax as he walked away

He then grabbed request from the wall, got it approved by the receptionist, and promptly walked out the building.

All the while, a woman in a white sundress sat in the corner, struggling to keep her laughter to herself.

Goblins are fairly weak creatures but you have to be careful with them. In their nests, you can find all sorts of traps or get put in a dangerous situation by an ambush. Many groups of adventurers die every year when they get overwhelmed by the sheer number of goblins sometimes found in these nests.

Normally, a receptionist wouldn’t allow a newly joined adventurer to take a request to exterminate a goblin’s nest, but seeing the young boy threaten the town’s watchmen, she decided to stay out of his way.

“Ten goblins, twenty goblins, fifty goblins… Nope, I’ve lost count.”

Pax simply walked straight into the nest and casted Rivers of Blood to automatically shred both the goblins and their traps.

He more closely resembled a human blender than a boy as endless numbers of goblins jumped at him, only to be shredded by his magic.

But he accidentally missed one that he thought he had killed, and it managed to bite his arm before exploding into meat chunks.

“Dammit, pain nullification… No, I shouldn’t use that.”

Pax theorized that purposely dulling his senses would only make him weaker. There must be a reason why humans felt pain. Thus, he healed his wound without pain nullification and moved on deeper into the nest.

After a bit of searching and blasting through some walls, Pax eventually found a cavernous area with an extra large goblin resting in the middle of it –The goblin queen.

She stood up, grabbed her oversized club, and screeched at the intruder.

But before she could even take a step, Pax pointed a finger gun at her and her chest exploded.

It was an unexpected situation for Derrick, that was all.

Sure the boy was strong, and maybe even a little bit unnerving, but Derrick has spent his entire life fighting. He too was no ordinary human.

Nothing could evade his incredible hearing, and his Concealment and Perception skills were second to none.

That’s why he decided to follow this mysterious boy.

He didn’t care much about the safety of the townspeople, nor did he have much loyalty to his captain. It was just that this boy was uniquely dangerous.

Derrick had a feeling that the boy might bring so much danger that even he might not be safe.

The boy had picked up a goblin extermination request, which normally took 4 to 5 fairly experienced Adventurers to complete.

As Derrick watched the boy walk into the nest, he wondered if the boy might just die in there so that he could get back to his usual boring life.

But not even a half hour later, the boy reemerged with what looked like a goblin queen’s head.

“You’ve got to be kidding me… right?”

Normally, raiding a goblin nest took several hours, as just finding the queen’s lair could take quite some time. But Pax seemed to be walking back to the town to collect his reward, so Derrick decided to verify what had happened by entering the goblin nest.

Even from outside the cave entrance, the metallic scent of blood was extremely potent.

With a grimace, Derrick couldn’t help but exclaim his surprise upon entering, “You’re kidding…”

The air was warm and damp and the walls were completely painted with blood. Derrick felt as if he had somehow walked into a different planet.

In his long career of fighting bandits, criminals, and dark magicians he had never seen anything even close to the level of malice and destruction left in every chunk of goblin meat.

It was completely unnecessary and over the top, and it terrified Derrick to his core.

Pax decided that this time he would walk in through the front gate this time. He had identification and a real reason to be there after all…

But after waiting in line for several minutes, the guards decided to surround him as soon as he showed his ID.

All the other civilians stepped away as one of the guards he had met that morning showed up.

Jarod? James? What was his name again? …It definitely started with a J. Pax didn’t feel at all in danger as he tried to remember the guard’s name and a possible way to get out of this situation.

“Pax, you are under arrest for illegal entering of the city premises and communicating intent to inflict harm upon a city watchmen.”

One of the knights standing behind Pax decided to kick him. As the leg moved through the air, if felt as if time had slowed to a crawl for Pax.

A sweet voice rung from the distance, asking, “Are you going to kill them?”

Next thing Pax knew, he was sitting atop the knight holding a blood blade to their neck. The knight’s right leg and arm seemed to have mysteriously vanished.

Pax’s breathing was heavy and his arm was shaky as he looked deep into the knight’s eyes. Though he couldn’t see it, Pax knew that two other knights were now closing in.

“Why are you hesitating? You’ve killed plenty before?”

Not someone innocent. Not someone I didn’t have to kill.

“Then what was Raya guilty of? What about Ash and your parents?”

The two knights swung their swords towards Pax, but before they could meet their target, they were repelled by tendrils of blood.

Pax then placed his hand on the place where the knight’s arm had been severed and a new arm grew to take its place. Then he did the same for the knight’s missing leg.

Standing up, Pax put his hands behind his head and finally spoke.

“I surrender”

Derrick had been watching the entire event from the edge of the forest. At first he wanted to scream at his stupid partner for messing with that monster. Jacob’s stupid pride would spell the end to the town.

Derrick thought that Pax would kill everyone, leaving nothing but chunks of meat and blood like he had in the goblin nest.

Surprisingly, Pax ended up surrendering himself willingly. Derrick wasn’t sure what to make of that. Pax could have easily run away or killed all of the knights. If, for some reason, his goal were to get arrested then why would he have resisted at first?

Thus Derrick could only come up with one conclusion:

This monster is unstable and unpredictable.
