Chapter 1:

I Won't Let Anyone Else Hurt You

The Darkness of My Dreams

Since childhood, I have dreamed of strangers every night. People I've never seen or heard of. But because every night has been filled with them for so long, I feel like they're part of my family.
I probably have some kind of mental issue... I said PROBABLY!!
I only told one person about it, after all, I’ve been bullied and called a monster my whole life. Now imagine if they find out that I get along better with the people in my head than in real life...
Maybe I'm not 100% normal... But anyway! I can't get the idea out of my head that they could be real people.
What disturbs me most is not seeing them every night, but seeing them disappear every night. They are kind, affectionate, protective, always trying to help. But in the end, they say goodbye. They Disappear in the middle of a cloud charged with the deepest darkness
Today was no different. I dreamed of Mei, a cute little girl with black hair. She ran, jumped and played in the street, while the snow fell. Shortly after, her mother called her to come in, because it was very cold. Mei agreed but said that in return she wanted a doll with white hair and a blue dress. Unfortunately, the mother replied that she had no money. As expected, Mei cried and kicked the snow around with her cute little kicks... Before leaving, she looked in my direction, waved and gave a big smile. Then she walked with her mother into the darkness, and after a last wave, she disappeared
The dream continued and this time it was with Amane, a woman who always appears to be my mother. I had come home full of bruises. I was beaten by some boys at school. Amane, desperate, treats my wounds, hands me clean clothes and makes dinner. Some time later, she says goodbye with a tight and warm hug saying: "You are my little boy, I will not let anyone else hurt you!". Then she walked to the door, opened it, and disappeared into the darkness.
I've tried countless times to stop them, but nothing I do makes a difference. After all, it's a dream. I have no control over anything.
One of the side effects is always waking up with tears in your eyes…
"I wish I could help them..."
*** At school, I stare at my reflection in the bathroom mirror.
"If these dreams had appeared when I started studying, it could be said that they are consequences of the bullying I have suffered to this day"
I splash water on my face and wipe it off.
"Being called a monster, excluded and shunned from the first day of school, would certainly bring trauma to a child. But that's not it... Of course I suffer... but I think it has something to do with my condition! I'm late for Mizumi Sensei's class"
When I saw the time on my phone screen, I darted down the hallway.
"Mizumi Sensei knows that I tend to run away during classes that aren’t hers, so she will understand when she notices I’m not there. I'm not going to get scolded because she's always kind to me, but I don't want to make her worry..."
I got some ugly stares as I ran, but I couldn't slow down.
"She is the person I trusted with my dreams. It's kind of silly, but I ended up falling in love with her”
I reached the end of the corridor and immediately went upstairs.
"Unlike everyone else in this miserable school, she was kind, welcomed me and reached out to me. Once she even went to my house to find out why I had not come to school for a few days. That day she even took a cak—"
My thoughts are interrupted upon reaching the second floor. Standing in front of my classroom door was an individual with a red demon mask, black armor, and a strange weapon in his hands.
"No... no, no, no, no!"
School has always been hell, but I never imagined I would meet a demon in person.
"That mask..."
***
Meanwhile, inside the classroom, two more of them had taken the students hostage.
One of them, with the same red demonic mask, was standing next to the sensei's table. The other appeared to be the captain. His presence and black demonic mask made something clear: he is the strongest there.
While the sensei was forced to kneel in front of the class, the students were instructed to keep their hands and phones where they could be seen.
After a few moments, the captain approaches and hits the sensei's head with the tip of the gun. Then she puts her hands on her head as she cries.
"This is the LAST TIME I’m going to ask. Where is Kurogane Yuto?"
Before they could answer, the classroom door opened and everyone's eyes immediately turned to me, standing there. Right behind me was the guy in the red mask.
As I am pushed in, I see the state Mizumi Sensei is in
"What?!" I mumbled in shock.
His frightened gaze meets mine for a moment.
"Kurogane-kun..." she muttered.
"Kurogane Yuto, isn't it?" asked the captain.
Students at the back of the room shouted, confirming my identity. Is it just out of fear, or is there something more?
"The boy matches the description we received, Captain. He shows mana traits, but he isn’t a band bearer"
"WONDERF—"
"It was you, wasn't it?!? That hurt her…" I interrupted, with burning eyes in fury
Predicting that I would do something, Mizumi Sensei tried to stop me
"Don't do anything, please, Kurogane-kun! They're from the Masakado Gang. They're too dangerous!"
"Masakado... I knew that demonic mask from somewhere... If the black mask is the captain, red is for the soldiers."
"The weak must obey the strong! She refused to tell me where you were. I just applied a little punishment."
He ran his hand into her hair and pulled hard
"YOU BASTARD—ARGHHH!!"
I tried to lunge at him, but before I could do anything, an ice crystal pierced my stomatch.
"Kurogane-kun!!"
The shot came from the soldier at the door behind me.
"Damn... that's why the weapon felt so strange... It uses the user's mana?!? But that doesn't matter... It just pissed me off even more!!"
"HA-HA! Very good! Now tie him up and let's go."
"Yes, Captain!"
I spat blood onto the ground and placed my hands on the ice crystal.
"Mizumi Sensei was the only person who reached out when I needed help... If anyone dares to hurt her, no matter who it is, I will crush them until there’s nothing left!"
I gather my strength and pull out the crystal.
"Arrghh!"
"Hey! Hey!" shouted the surprised captain.
A dark silhouette formed around my body. I felt each mana cell pulse, vibrate, and reshape repeatedly, offering routes that were not possible before.
The opening left by the crystal closed, and the internal tissues interconnected, recreating the lost organs. A clean, scar-free recovery
"My body has been destroyed and rebuilt countless times my entire life... that's nothing compared to it."
Then the shots came again. But just before they hit me, a wall of ice formed, blocking the crystals from reaching me.
"What?" I mumbled, confused.
“WHAT?! BUT YOU’RE NOT A BAND BEARER!” shouted the captain.
His eyes darted to my left arm, and he became even more confused. Three bands slowly formed, my arm now emanating an aura even darker than the rest of my body.

“Impossible…” he murmured.
"What's happening to me? Bands? And this ice? It formed with my mana, but I wasn't the one who did it!"
The shots kept hitting the ice wall, but she refused to break.
"It's cold... but at the same time, there’s a strangely familiar warmth... I feel like someone is hugging me..."
A memory of the dream I had with Amane earlier today comes back to mind.
'I won't let anyone else hurt you...'
"Amane? That doesn't... it’s not possible... they’re just dreams..."
Everyone there was surprised, including me!
"Now I get why the boss is after you. Third-band bearers can hide their mana with stealth, but hiding the bands themselves? And that near-instant regeneration? Who the hell are you, kid?!"
"SHUT UP!"
I squeezed the ice crystal and hurled it at him. A quick dodge forced him to move away from Mizumi Sensei, and it was in this opening that I fired and hit him with a punch imbued with concentrated mana
The impact hurled him against the soldier behind him. The sensei's desk shattered, and cracks spread across the wall
"I don't understand what's happening to me, but here's the thing. You hurt Mizumi-Sensei. Call your boss and tell him to prepare your COFFIN!"
