Chapter 6:
Science Makes No Sense
Since the day I’ve first seen Nicolas’ abilities on the internet, I started to journal every single weird anomaly from around the world. And I have found some interesting results.
April 16th : The first time I saw Nicolas use powers on the internet. April 23rd : I brought him into the lab to experiment with him. April 24th : The Thunder Charge experiment. April 26th : Nicolas’ encounter with a guy that can control carbon atoms. On the first of May, the guy got arrested.
I made Sena do a background check on him. I found out that his name is Shiroi Yaba. He is currently 20 years old, attending a university here in Tokyo. Or at least he was. He dropped out on April 25th. It was the same day his parents got hospitalized. Without these powers, he would probably continue living a normal life.
Another anomaly I’ve seen on the news was a huge spike of ice in the middle of Paris. It towered at 150m in height. It is around half the height of the Eiffel Tower. For three days, the spike didn’t melt. On the same day the spike melted, a frozen corpse was found lying on a hotel floor.
My theory was someone that could control the temperature of material. But since the person is dead, I do not have any proof to confirm it.
Another Anomaly I found is that 80% of cancer patients all around the world has gotten worse. This huge jump in numbers happened after April 23rd.
The most interesting anomaly that I found on the internet was also one that got Mizuki into a spiral of madness. It was news that almost made her lose her marbles.
On April 18th, some guy in New York exploded. There was no explanation of why this could happen. The guy was even a healthy person. The anomaly comes from the fact that there were three eyeballs at the scene, 3 extra fingers and blood that wasn’t his.
In the beginning, the police thought that the guy could have been a cannibal, but the DNA came from a woman that was still alive, living in a small village in Japan. 5 days later on April 23rd, the woman disappeared. Footage showed her getting sucked into a small orb-like figure.
It was as if the woman created a black hole, and the guy in Amerika was a white hole. That is the anomaly driving Mizuki crazy.
I want to do more research on anomalies, but I have no time due to my research and experiments that I have to do to earn money. So, naturally, I turned to my best friend Sena.
I grabbed my phone to send a message to him. I asked: [Where are the two of you currently?]
He responded not long after with: [You know that abandoned building at the edge of the city?]
[That freaky-Ish hospital?]
[Yes.]
[Alright, I am on my way.]
Sena was probably training together with Nicolas. Probably searching for better fighting ground for variety. Nicolas probably needs all of that training if he wants to become a superhero.
I got into my car and drove towards the abandoned hospital. After a 15-minute drive, I got there. I got out of my car and looked at the building. I then heard gunshots and saw glass shattering from the third floor. They were probably training there.
I got into the building and took the stairs to the fourth floor because the lift isn’t working. Completely logical for an abandoned hospital. It wasn’t in use for 10 years, I am surprised that they haven’t gotten rid of this building yet.
When I arrived, I saw the two of them having some hand-to-hand combat. Nicolas kept up pretty well. But Sena was still stronger and managed to tackle Nicolas. Nicolas fell to the floor, feeling completely overpowered by Sena.
“Fighting without my powers is hard!” Nicolas cried out.
“What if the enemy have a power that is on your level?” Sena asks. “Fighting hand-to-hand will be your last choice.”
Nicolas pouted, unhappy by the results. But then he notices me. “Oh, hey Aki, what brings you here?” He asks me.
“I’m here for Sena.” I answered holding up a file. “I have a job for you.”
“Do you really have to talk like my old boss?” Sena asks grabbing the file. “I am technically your boss.”
“Whatever.” He started reading the file. “What is this all about?”
“I want you to use your detective brain to focus on researching those anomalies. I have a theory on something. I do not have any free time, so I hope you can figure it out properly. I want to say take your time, but I’d like to have a report on your research as soon as possible.”
“I understand.” Sena closed the file. “I’ll do my best to complete them.”
“I will then get going.” I started to head out. “Good luck Nicolas!”
“Thanks!” He cried out, hoping to be freed from Sena’s harsh teaching techniques.
I got out of the hospital and got back in my car. I then drove back to the lab. When I arrived, I went to the top floor because I wanted some space while doing my experiments. But when I arrived, I saw many scraps of metal on the floor. Gears, cables and circuits were also present everywhere.
In the middle, Mizuki was standing there. She had a bow and arrow in her hands. A target board was sprayed on the wall. She shot arrows and most of them hit the middle.
“Are you making another machine?” I asked grabbing a gear from the floor.
Mizuki shot another arrow, staying quiet. Is she still angry at me? I’ve crossed the line many times, this shouldn’t be that big of an issue.
“You liked doing archery in your younger days, right?” I sked, putting the metal gear down. I then headed to a desk where all her documents were. I picked it up and began to read it. “But the lab isn’t an archery field you know.”
She was still quiet. Not a single word came out of her mouth. She then shot another arrow at the wall. This time it was not in the middle. It hit the last ring of the target board. She sighed and dropped the bow and arrows on the metal scraps on the floor.
“Have I ever shared with you that I did archery?” Mizuki finally spoke up.
“Yes, many times in fact.” I answered her question, putting the sheets of paper down onto the desk. “Has the overwork delete some scenes in your mind?”
She seemed suspicious of me. “What do you want from me?” She then asks.
“Oh, nothing at all.” I simply answered. “I just wanted to do my experiments here. But it seems like you’ve occupied this room.”
She said nothing in response. She then sat down on the floor, back against the wall and hugging her legs.
“I’m tired…” She suddenly said. “There’s something about you that irritates me and I can’t point out what.”
“Have a crush on me or something?” I asked.
“That’s my follow up question.” Mizuki answered. “You seem to be stalking me. But then you also claim that you know everything about me. Why did you let me in this lab?”
I put my hand on my chin, thinking of a response. “What do you think?” I asked her back.
“Nicolas is a person that needed help, so it was natural for you to bring him into your lab. Your motto is even about helping people.”
“I help anybody that is in need of direction in life.” I then said my motto. “I even helped my friend Sena have a reason to live. But what exactly are you trying to point out?”
“Why did you let me in your lab?”
“Many science companies denied your request to work for them because your ideals were stupid. If I didn’t accept you, you will probably get depressed and give up on life. To be completely honest, your research is interesting, but it also seems to be too far to reach. Nobody has the technology to do such things.”
“Layla does. Her mother also.”
“Aren’t those two people not characters from a sci-fi novel you wrote?”
“I never said those two names out loud. So, tell me, how do you know everything about me?” She was finally starting to catch up.
“I’ve given you enough hints, get a pinboard and connect all the dots.” I then headed for the door. “But promise something, do not ever give up.”
“Why…?” She stood up. Her eyes got tear. “Why do you hate me while also help me?”
“I like to see poor souls like yours suffer.” That was a lie. My reason is completely different.
“Liar.” She knew that I was lying. “Whatever, do your experiments. I’ll eventually find out.”
At the end of the day, I have wasted too many hours and have to delay my experiments a little more. I hope I’ll get my paycheck in time. Our rents are getting expensive.
