Chapter 4:

My Angel

The Lady's Knight

I am alive.

Somehow, I was not crushed by the transport craft's heavy wing, which if I recall correctly, snapped away at the last moment. The broken jet was strong enough to allow itself to fly  clear of the wreckage rather than crushing my puny little trainer. Which is good for me.

"Alex! You're out! Out of the program, out! And expect a court marshal when we-" I cut the radio. Fucking hell. At least I won't have to worry about food and shelter in prison. I pop open the cockpit and head towards the direction of the burning wreck of the other plane. Adrenaline courses through my body as I hop out.

Whoa. Started off on the wrong foot as I landed. I almost fell over.

There's a pair of pilots scrambling out of the airplane. Despite their scorched uniforms, they seem mostly fine. I notice an extra large royal insignia on the sides of their uniforms under the national flag as thick black smoke rises from the plane. Worried, I run over to them.
"Hey, you alright?" The pilot asks. You kidding me? You're the one covered in ashes!
"I...I think I'm alright, I..." The pilot gives me a weird look, and moves by. People continue to rush out of the airplane, completely ignoring me. This is when it occurs to me that I am covered in blood. Specifically, my own blood. Uh oh.

"Three, four...wait, where's Sophie?" One of the maids who had run out just now asks. She looks back inside. "Oh no..." I can hear the fear in her voice as she turns to her crewmates. "We haven't brought her highness out, we haven't-" That's my cue. I walk up and put my hand on her shoulder.
"That's alright. I'll go check." Despite the protests of those outside, I decide to dash into the blazing inferno. At least if I die here I might be considered a hero. I give them my signature Alex grin and jump into the craft, where I almost fall over again. Haha, whoopsie.

It's hell the moment I step into the aircraft. Besides the oppressive heat which I can feel even from outside, the wreck is filled with sharp edges that could easily puncture my fireproof flightsuit, the only thing that gives me any hope of survival in here. The visor helps reduce the glare, but even then, it's somehow simultaneously too bright and too dark to see anything. And though my flight mask has some oxygen capabilities, I know it's no spacesuit. Every instinct in my body is screaming for me to turn around and get away, but I know I can't just leave whoever is in there to a fiery fate. My life is over anyways. Might as well spend it trying to save someone.
"Hello? Is anyone there?" I yell out. "Hello?"
"Hey!" The plane crew calls out from my rear, just out the door. "Let me help-"
"No no, I got this!" Mustering up all the courage I can, I venture deeper into the plane, before they decide to stop me. "Hello? Hello, is anyone here?"

"Here!" There's a weak voice coming from inside one of the rooms. There's desperate banging, and in that moment, I'm actually glad to be inside of this hellscape, helping my fellow human. The door's blocked by a blazing piece of wreckage, preventing the person inside from getting out.
"Hold still, I got you!" Ignoring the harm to my own hands, I grab the white-hot bar and toss it aside. "Ah, fuck! Shit!"
"Are you okay?" The weak voice asks. It hurts like a bitch! The fireproof gloves helped prevent the worst of the damage though, so I think it should be fine.
"I'm fine, I think!" I steel myself and give a confident reply, even if my hands are saying otherwise. They still seem functional, so with the door unobstructed, I wrench it open. Out falls a beautiful girl wearing an oxygen mask. Blonde tresses of hair tumbles out of her bun as she wearily looks up at me. It's awkwardly silent for a moment (if you ignore the whirlwind fire behind us that is) before she speaks up once more. "Am...am I dead?" The girl asks before coughing.
"Not under my watch, no." I'd almost be distracted by her beauty if not for the fact that we were in a burning wreck that can explode at any moment, so I pick her up and start heading for the exit. We manage to get to the door when I start feeling woozy and dizzy. Hmm. The crash might be catching up to me. It's probably okay though. I'm carrying a girl bridal style and everything, I can't let this awesome moment go to waste!

"Are you okay?" The girl asks. Her voice is familiar. Almost like I've heard it somewhere before.
"Yeah, I'm...fine, I think." The adrenaline might have helped me a little, but now it's becoming apparent to me that wow, the ground sure is hard as hell to stand up on. Almost like there was a delay. "Ugh..." I stagger. Oh great, now I can barely stand straight. I can't stop now though, the door's just...up...ahead...

"Hey!" One of the pilots yells out. Having braved up, it's the transport pilot's turn to leap into the plane, and he manages to drag the both of us out just as I lose all power in my legs.

"Pilot! Sir!" The girl yells as I fall over. I feel delirious. And I might be slightly concussed. The dehydration from the fire probably doesn't help. I close my eyes as I feel some hands dragging me away. Despite the ringing pain in my head, I want to pretend it's simple exhaustion. And I AM exhausted.

"Princess Sophie!" One of the maids yell out. "I'm so sorry your highness! I panicked. Please, drink some water! I have some right here..."

Man, my head hurts. Sophie...So-fie. Like soap, but with a fie. Wait, what's a fie? My head still hurts.

I feel something cold on my lips. A canteen of water. It's the best water I've ever drunk. Tastes delicious, despite the lukewarm temperature and the disgusting bitter taste to it that screams "distilled." I open my eyes to see the girl gulping down a massive amount of water herself, before she runs over to me, and kneels down in front of me.

God damn, she's beautiful. Even as messed up as she is, I can see that she's lovely. There's this horrifically devastated look in her eyes as she looks over my body.

Where have I seen you before?

"Are...you...an angel?" I laugh slowly. "Cause uh, I..."

I know this girl. She's my angel, the one I've been searching for.

"Your name is...Sophie?"

Everything goes black.
