Chapter 3:

Attempt #1

Dear Diary, I Just Want A Picture Of The Moon

Dear Diary,

Could I tell you about a dream I had last night?

It was about a distant memory where I was at the neighborhood park with Bà Ngoại. I think I was about nine-years-old. Thanh and Yenny were in the after school program so they couldn't play until later on. Luckily, the park was actually next to their school, just a bridge away over a ditch separating the two concrete plains. So while we were waiting, I was worming around the playground while my grandma was on the bench, occasionally sending an attentive glance to one of the exercise equipment nearby.

There I was, playing cylinder tic-tac-toe by myself. I lost...and won. So, I cleared the "board" for the second round. I decided to go "X" first this time. X on the top left.

Suddenly, the bottom right moved. "O"

I looked to the left and right of me. No one, except some pigeons.

I went back to the game, thinking it was the wind.

"X" top middle.

"O" top right.

Now perplexed, I then hesitantly made my next move.

"X" middle left.

"O" middle right.

Immediately a cheer giggled from behind the board. I marched back there to find the source, to find my opponent.

A being of bone with scaley- iridescent veins twisted around it and wings small making little gust. Their limbs are knuckles first to the ground yet they don't make a dent or scratch as the sunlight passes through them.

I gasped not in shock but in awe. "Who are you?"

My opponent is now the one perplexed while slowly stepping away from the playground bars as I move back. "You're not scared?" the voice asked with concern. Mouth still agape, I shook my head side to side.

"Bich! Who's your friend?" My grandma calls out in Vietnamese. There was a hint of amusement.

"What's your name? My name is Bich!" I greeted to my new possible friend.

As they open their mouth, an adult male voice yells from afar.

"Cie-!"

"Meow!"

And then I woke up to a dark 4 AM because Luna had to announce that it's breakfast time.

I was a little sad that the dream ended. Something about it was surprisingly calming. Like a memory but I feel like something my younger self conjured up. But alas, I must maintain order in the household and not deprive Luna away from her schedule.

I was spacing while staring at the Luna's weekly meal time whiteboard, courtesy of Yenny, the middle sibling and the family chef.

"It's Tuesday so..."

Luna meowed again because I was a minute behind opening up the can. Don't worry, breakfast was served.

No longer feeling tired to go back to bed, I decided to brush my teeth before heading to the front to see the Moon.

"Maybe this time, it'll work."

With my now-fully charged phone in hand, I took a quick snapshot of the Moon. I looked at the result.

Blurry. Typical.

"Eh, I'll deal with it later." I mumbled before heading back inside, the last thing I heard was some truck in the distance backing up. I hope they didn't witness my failed attempt at moon photography.

But that's not important. I gotta deal with my unemployment first. And Luna.

Catch you later when I'm fully conscious,

Bich

Tuesday 20XX, 4 something AM.
