Chapter 14:
Deranged Martyrs
Kam.
My hero…
What’s happening?
Why can’t I open my eyes?
I can’t feel my body…
This sensation… it’s very strange.
She could only hear and see her own thoughts.
Sally began to panic.
Until she heard a voice.
“Hello, Sally.
Can you hear me?”
Sally answered quickly, almost instinctively:
“Yes… yes… I can hear you.
Even though I’m sure you can’t hear me…”
But the voice replied:
“I’m glad you can hear me.
I’m Said.”
Sally felt a small mental jolt.
“Said…? The creator of the group Bastard Society… why can I hear you?
How are you getting into my head?”
“I can communicate with you through the energy I’m transferring to you,” he explained.
“I’m creating an energy link.
The current of energy runs through your body, reaches your brain… and then returns to me.
That allows me to hear your thoughts.”
Sally took a breath —at least, in her mind— trying to steady herself.
“I want to know what’s going on… where am I?
Why can’t I move?”
“You’re hospitalized,” Said replied calmly.
“You’re in a coma.”
“No… that can’t be…” her thoughts trembled.
“Calm down,” Said said. “That’s why I’m here. I want to help you.”
“Help me…?”
“I’ll help you unlock your memories.
There are fourteen days left until the date comes…
The day when that light covered everything.
A Tuesday the 30th… do you remember?”
Sally felt a stab in her head.
A flash.
A white light.
And then nothing.
“No… I still can’t remember clearly.”
“You will,” Said assured her.
“With the days, more memories will appear.
That’s why I came: because your development could stall.
And you, just like everyone in Bastard Society…
you’re part of this family.”
Sally felt something warm inside the emptiness where her body should have been.
“Family…?”
“Also, the networks are exploding with the news that you’re in a coma,” Said continued.
“Many people come to visit you.
They leave gifts… letters… and messages.”
Sally stayed silent.
She didn’t know whether to feel overwhelmed… or accompanied.
“Rest a bit, okay?” Said said softly.
“I’ll come back tomorrow.”
There was a small pause.
The energy around her mind vibrated.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” Said added.
“We’ll also begin training your use of energy.”
Said’s presence faded.
Sally was left alone with her thoughts, floating in the darkness.
