Chapter 20:
Mirrorblade: Rise of the Perfect Copy
The castle was vast and quiet in the early morning. Corridors of polished stone stretched endlessly, echoing the footsteps of guards and servants. Kaelen moved through them silently, a shadow among shadows, unseen yet ever-watchful.
He had lived this way since agreeing to mentor Prince Aric—keeping his identity hidden, observing the kingdom, and ensuring that both the prince and his sister, Princess Lysandra, grew stronger under his guidance. Though he could have revealed himself, Kaelen knew the importance of patience. Influence often spoke louder when unseen.
In the training hall, Aric practiced tirelessly. Kaelen watched from a concealed balcony, noting the precision of his movements and the subtle improvements in timing and strategy. The prince had grown remarkably in a short time, yet Kaelen’s golden eyes caught every minor flaw, every hesitation that could cost him dearly in real combat.
“Again,” Kaelen whispered to himself, a faint smile curving beneath his hood. “Not for me… but for him.”
Later, Kaelen visited the princess in the castle gardens. Lysandra was practicing spellcasting, her hands glowing with faint silver light as she manipulated magical energies into intricate shapes. Kaelen observed her silently, impressed by her natural talent and focus.
“Your control is improving,” he said softly, stepping from the shadows. Lysandra jumped slightly, surprised but intrigued by his sudden appearance.
“Master Kaelen!” she exclaimed, bowing lightly. “I didn’t hear you arrive.”
“You are progressing well,” Kaelen said calmly. “But remember, magic is like the sword—you must combine instinct with understanding, precision with patience. One misstep can be costly.”
Lysandra nodded, absorbing every word. “I will be careful,” she said. “And I want to be able to protect the kingdom… and my brother.”
Kaelen’s gaze softened ever so slightly. “Good. That determination will guide you, but do not let it blind you. Strength is nothing without control.”
As the day faded, Kaelen returned to the quiet halls of the castle, moving unseen among the knights, guards, and servants. No one knew the true identity of the masked master who silently guided the heirs of the kingdom. His life was one of observation, patience, and subtle intervention—an invisible guardian shaping the future of the realm.
Yet, even in his silence, Kaelen felt the rumble of distant danger. The monsters and demons he had sensed earlier were moving closer. Shadows stretched over the kingdom like a prelude to war. The Mirrorblade knew that his role would soon demand more than teaching.
And when that time came, the lessons he had imparted, the discipline he had instilled, and the courage he had nurtured in Aric and Lysandra would be put to the ultimate test.
For now, though, Kaelen remained a silent figure in the castle, unseen but ever-present—a shadow of guidance, a mentor of unmatched skill, and a guardian against the storm that was already approaching.
