Chapter 6:

Chapter 5: The Redwood Basin

Crimson Eden

The air in the Redwood Basin was thick with mist, the ancient trees stretching skyward like silent sentinels. Their crimson leaves shimmered in the dim light, a mirror of the blood-stained legends that had made this place infamous among prisoners.

Ren stepped cautiously onto the forest floor, his senses alert. Every snap of a twig echoed like a gunshot, every shadow seemed to move with a mind of its own. Yoruha followed close behind, her bow at the ready, eyes scanning for anything unusual.

“This place… it feels alive,” Yoruha murmured, almost to herself. “Like it’s watching us.”

Ren nodded. “Stay close. The Memory Wraith said this is where the first trial begins.”

They moved deeper, the trees closing around them. The ground was littered with roots that seemed to writhe beneath their feet. Suddenly, a low growl cut through the fog, freezing them in place.

From the mist, shapes emerged—creatures twisted by memories of past prisoners, their forms barely human, faces contorted with sorrow and rage. The Memory Wraith had warned them: the Redwood Basin forces those who enter to face their own past sins.

Ren gritted his teeth and charged forward, sword drawn, feeling the familiar surge of energy as his body pushed past its limits. Each strike he landed fractured the illusionary forms, but new ones emerged, feeding off his fear and guilt.

Yoruha loosed arrows with deadly precision, each one piercing through the memories given form. Yet even as they fought, the forest seemed to shift, rearranging itself to test their resolve.

At the heart of the basin, a massive tree loomed, its trunk hollowed and blackened. A single figure stood there—an echo of Ren’s earliest failure, the memory he had tried to bury. It stepped forward, voice whispering accusations and doubts.

Ren’s chest tightened. Every doubt, every regret, threatened to consume him. But Yoruha’s steady gaze reminded him—he wasn’t alone. Drawing on the bond they had forged, he let the anger, pain, and determination merge into a single force.

With a roar, Ren shattered the illusion, the memory dissipating into the mist. The forest fell silent. The creatures vanished, leaving only the crimson leaves swaying gently above.

Yoruha stepped up beside him, offering a rare smile. “One trial down. And you didn’t just survive—you conquered it.”

Ren exhaled, exhausted but resolute. “Then let’s see what the next one has in store.”

From the shadows, unseen eyes watched. The real challenge was only beginning.
