Chapter 20:

Choosing Dreams Over Comfort

The Moment I fell for You.

---
Graduation day arrived with perfect weather—clear skies, warm sunshine, and cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Airi stood in front of her mirror in her graduation gown, adjusting the cap for the third time. Her mother hovered nearby, camera ready, eyes already misty.
"You look beautiful," her mother said. "All grown up."
"I'm just wearing a gown, Mom."
"You're graduating. Starting university. Leaving home." Her mother's voice cracked. "My baby is all grown up."
Airi turned and hugged her mother tightly. "I'm not going far. Tokyo is only an hour away. I'll visit."
"I know. But it won't be the same." Her mother pulled back, wiping her eyes. "I'm so proud of you, Airi. Of the woman you've become. Strong and kind and brave enough to chase your dreams."
"Even if one of those dreams is four hours away in Kyoto?"
Her mother smiled. "Especially that dream. Love is worth fighting for. I should have told you that sooner."
Airi's eyes filled with tears. "Thank you, Mom. For understanding. For supporting us."
"Just promise me one thing."
"Anything."
"If it stops making you happy—if the distance becomes too much—promise you'll be honest. With yourself and with him. Don't stay out of obligation."
"I promise."
Her phone buzzed.
**Ren**: *you ready for this?*
**Airi**: *As ready as I'll ever be.*
**Ren**: *meet you at the gates before the ceremony?*
**Airi**: *Our spot?*
**Ren**: *always our spot*

## 🌸 The Gates
The cherry tree by the school gates was in full bloom, petals drifting down like pink snow. Ren stood beneath it, also in his graduation gown, looking handsome and nervous and absolutely perfect.
When he saw Airi, his entire face lit up.
"There she is. The brilliant graduate."
"Look who's talking, Mr. Kyoto University."
"We did it, huh?" He pulled her close, careful not to wrinkle their gowns. "We actually made it through high school."
"Together."
"Together." He kissed her forehead. "I have something for you. Before the ceremony."
"What?"
He pulled out a small box from his pocket. Airi's breath caught—it was too small to be a ring, but still.
"Before you panic, it's not a proposal. Not yet." He grinned. "Open it."
Inside was a delicate silver bracelet with a small compass charm.
"So you can always find your way back to me," Ren explained, fastening it around her wrist. "No matter how far apart we are."
"Ren..." Tears pricked her eyes. "It's beautiful."
"I have one too. See?" He showed her his wrist—a matching bracelet. "We're connected. Always."
"Always." She touched the compass charm, feeling the weight of it—light but significant. "I love it. I love you."
"I love you too. So much." He cupped her face gently. "Today's going to be hard. Saying goodbye. Watching you leave. But I need you to know—I'm not scared anymore. I'm ready. We're ready."
"We are," Airi agreed. "We've done the work."
"We have. And now we get to see if it pays off."
"It will."
"It will," he echoed with certainty.
They kissed under the cherry tree, petals falling around them like blessings, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

## 🎓 The Ceremony
The gymnasium was packed with families, all cameras and proud smiles and barely contained tears. Airi sat with her class, Ren several rows behind her. But she could feel his presence, solid and sure.
The principal gave a speech about futures and potential and seizing opportunities. The valedictorian—not Airi, surprisingly, but a boy from Class 3-B—spoke about the bonds they'd formed and the challenges ahead.
Then they called names.
"Sato Airi."
Airi walked across the stage, accepting her diploma, hearing her mother's camera shutter clicking frantically. She smiled and bowed, then returned to her seat with the physical proof of her achievement.
Several names later: "Kurosawa Ren."
The applause was loud—Ren was well-loved despite (or because of) his wild reputation. He grinned as he accepted his diploma, shooting a quick wink in Airi's direction.
She rolled her eyes but smiled.
That was her boyfriend. Her chaotic, passionate, absolutely perfect boyfriend.
When the ceremony ended and caps were thrown into the air, Airi immediately searched for Ren in the crowd. She found him already making his way toward her, diploma clutched in one hand.
"We did it!" He swept her up in a hug, spinning her around. "We're graduates!"
"We're graduates," she laughed, holding onto him. "It's real. It's actually real."
Around them, their classmates celebrated, hugged, cried, took photos. The air was thick with endings and beginnings, with nostalgia and excitement all tangled together.
"Group photo!" Miki shouted, gathering their friend group. "Everyone together!"
They crowded close—Airi and Ren in the center, Miki and Yuki on either side, Takeshi and Tanaka behind them. Someone's parent took the photo, capturing them in this moment of transition, still together before they scattered across the country.
"To us!" Yuki declared. "To surviving high school!"
"To the future!" Takeshi added.
"To whatever comes next!" Miki shouted.
"To us," Tanaka said quietly, meeting Airi and Ren's eyes. "Especially you two. Don't screw it up."
"We won't," Ren promised.
"We can't," Airi added. "Too many people are counting on us."
Everyone laughed, but there was truth in it. They'd become symbols to their friends—proof that love could survive challenges, that commitment mattered, that some things were worth fighting for.
It was a lot of pressure.
But they'd carry it together.

## 🏫 The Rooftop One Last Time
That evening, after the official festivities ended, Airi and Ren snuck back to school one final time. The building was mostly empty, only janitors and a few lingering teachers.
They climbed to the rooftop—their rooftop—for the last time as high school students.
"We've had a lot of important conversations here," Airi said, looking out at the city.
"First tutoring session. First real talk. The fight. The makeup. The plan." Ren stood beside her. "This place is basically our relationship in location form."
"Poetic."
"I have my moments." He turned to face her. "Can we make a promise? Here, in our spot?"
"What kind of promise?"
"That no matter what happens—distance, challenges, whatever life throws at us—we come back here. At least once a year. To remember."
"To remember what?"
"Where we started. Who we were. Why we chose this." He took her hands. "I don't ever want to forget this feeling. This certainty that what we have is worth fighting for."
"I promise. Once a year, we come back here."
"Together."
"Together."
They sealed it with a kiss, slow and sweet and full of promises they intended to keep.
"I'm going to miss this," Airi said softly. "This place. This time. Us like this."
"We'll still be us. Just... evolved. Different location, same love."
"Different location, same love." She smiled. "I like that."
They stayed until the sun began to set, painting the sky in oranges and pinks. Then, reluctantly, they made their way back down, leaving their rooftop behind but carrying its memories forward.

## 🍜 Last Dinner
Ren's mom invited Airi and her parents over for dinner—a farewell meal before both kids left for university. The apartment was crowded with six people, but it felt warm and right.
"To our graduates," Ren's mom declared, raising her glass. "May they chase their dreams fearlessly."
"To young love," Airi's mother added, smiling at the two of them. "May it prove everyone wrong."
Airi's father cleared his throat. Everyone fell silent.
"Four years ago, I told you both that I didn't approve. That you were too young, too naive." He looked between Airi and Ren. "I set a test. Four years of university, four years of distance. If you made it through, I said, then we'd talk."
Ren tensed beside Airi. She took his hand under the table.
"I'm not retracting that test," her father continued. "But I want you both to know—I hope you pass. I hope I'm wrong about the odds. Because I've watched you grow together. I've seen how you support each other, challenge each other, make each other better." He looked at Ren specifically. "You've proven yourself more than I expected. Both of you have."
"Thank you, sir," Ren said, voice thick with emotion.
"Don't thank me yet. Prove me wrong. Make it through the four years. Then we'll talk about the next steps."
"We will," Airi said firmly.
"We will," Ren echoed.
They ate and laughed and shared stories, two families becoming one in the way that mattered—through love and support and shared hope for the future.
When it was time to leave, Ren's mom pulled Airi aside.
"Take care of him," she whispered. "He's stronger than he thinks, but he'll need you."
"He'll need you too. You're still his person."
"Then he has two people. That's even better." She squeezed Airi's hand. "And Airi? Let him take care of you too. Don't try to be strong all the time."
"I won't. I promise."
---
## 🌙 The Night Before
That night, Airi couldn't sleep. Tomorrow, Ren left for Kyoto. The day after, she left for Tokyo. Their lives together—the daily proximity, the casual touches, the certainty of seeing each other—all of it ended tomorrow.
Her phone buzzed at 2 AM.
**Ren**: *you awake?*
**Airi**: *Can't sleep.*
**Ren**: *me neither. can i come over?*
**Airi**: *My parents—*
**Ren**: *not for long. just need to see you*
Twenty minutes later, she heard the familiar sound of someone climbing the tree outside her window. She opened it to find Ren, slightly out of breath, grinning like an idiot.
"You're insane," she whispered, pulling him inside.
"For you? Absolutely." He hugged her tightly. "I just needed to see you. One more time before everything changes."
They sat on her bed, backs against the wall, hands intertwined.
"I'm terrified," Airi admitted in the darkness.
"Me too."
"What if we can't do this? What if distance breaks us?"
"Then we were never as strong as we thought. But Airi?" He turned to face her. "I don't think that's true. I think we're stronger than we know. Stronger than distance or time or doubt."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because I know us. I know what we've survived. We've faced jealousy and pressure and our own fears. We've had the hard conversations. We've built something real." He touched the compass bracelet on her wrist. "This isn't just hope. This is certainty based on evidence."
"When did you become so wise?"
"Since I fell in love with you." He kissed her softly. "We're going to make it, Airi. And in four years, when we're both graduating university, when we've achieved our dreams and proven everyone wrong—we're going to look back at this moment and laugh at how scared we were."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
They held each other until dawn began to break, neither wanting to let go, both knowing they had to.
"You should go," Airi finally said. "Before my parents wake up."
"I know." But he didn't move. "I love you. More than anything."
"I love you too. So much."
"Four years. We can do four years."
"We can do anything."
One more kiss. One more embrace. Then Ren climbed back out the window, disappearing into the early morning light.
Airi watched him go, touching the compass on her wrist, and let herself cry. Not from sadness, but from the overwhelming weight of love and hope and determination.
They were going to make it.
They had to.
---
## 🚂 Goodbye
The next day, Airi and her family accompanied Ren to the train station. His mom was already there, trying not to cry. Their friend group had shown up too—Miki, Yuki, Takeshi, even Tanaka.
"You better text constantly," Miki said, hugging Ren fiercely.
"I will. I promise."
"And visit," Yuki added.
"Every other weekend. We have a schedule."
Takeshi clasped Ren's shoulder. "Good luck, man. Make us proud."
Tanaka just nodded, but his eyes said everything. *Don't screw this up. We're counting on you.*
Then it was Airi's turn.
They stood apart from the group, trying to find words for the impossible.
"This is it," Ren said.
"This is it."
"Four hours away. Different lives. Same love."
"Same love," Airi repeated. "Always."
"I'm going to call you tonight. As soon as I get to the dorm."
"I'll be waiting."
"And in two weeks, you'll visit. Friday after classes."
"I'll be on the first train."
"And we'll read our letters tomorrow. On our first days."
"Together but apart."
"Together but apart." He cupped her face, thumbs wiping away tears she didn't know she was crying. "This isn't goodbye, Airi. It's just... see you later."
"See you later," she managed through her tears.
"I love you. So much. More than anything."
"I love you too. Forever."
They kissed one last time, aware of everyone watching, not caring. When they pulled apart, Ren grabbed his bag.
"Don't forget me," he said with a shaky smile.
"Impossible. You're unforgettable."
"Good. Because you're stuck with me now."
"Forever," she promised.
"Forever."
He boarded the train. Found a window seat. Pressed his hand against the glass. Airi pressed hers against it from outside, separated by glass but connected by everything that mattered.
The train began to move. Ren kept his hand there until the station disappeared from view.
And then he was gone.
Airi stood on the platform, surrounded by friends and family, crying and laughing at the same time.
"He'll be okay," Miki said, hugging her.
"We'll be okay," Airi corrected. "We're going to make it."
"You are," everyone agreed.
And standing there, watching the train tracks stretch into the distance, Airi chose to believe it.
They'd chosen their dreams. They'd chosen each other. They'd chosen the hard path because they were brave enough to walk it.
Now came the real test.
But they were ready.
Together but apart, they were ready.

## 📔 Final Journal Entry (Act 2)
*Dear Future Me,*
*Today Ren left for Kyoto. Tomorrow I leave for Tokyo.*
*I'm writing this through tears—happy tears, sad tears, scared tears, hopeful tears all mixed together.*
*We did it. We graduated. We got into our dream schools. We chose both our dreams and each other.*
*Everyone said we couldn't. That we were too young, too naive, that distance would break us.*
*But we built a plan. We had the hard conversations. We did the work.*
*Now comes the test. Four years. Four hours apart. Different schools, different lives, same love.*
*I'm terrified. But I'm also certain.*
*Certain that what we have is real. That our love is strong enough. That we're brave enough.*
*Tomorrow I read his letter. Tomorrow I start my new life. Tomorrow everything changes.*
*But some things won't change. My love for Ren. His love for me. Our commitment to making this work.*
*Four years, Future Me. That's all. Just four years.*
*And then we get our forever.*
*I'm ready.*
*We're ready.*
*Love,**Present Airi (graduating, terrified, but absolutely certain)*
