Chapter 1:

Meeting The Girl from Those Dreams

Those Dreams I Had Those Nights

November 7/2012 — Dream World

*Ding-dong-ding-ding*

The same ring of the bell echoed— the one that had the same melody.

“Hiyura! Open the door,” Mumma said.

I, who was already dashing towards the door, knew that it was Papa. The sound that is carried at every footstep of this man was something I could recognize instantly.

I opened the door.

“Yo! Hiyura, I am back.”

He carried a glorious smile on his face, like a Pokémon Master who had become so strong that no one could defeat him.

He is my hero.

I also want to become a Pokémon Master like him.

I nodded and welcomed him in with sparkling eyes.

“Bath is ready, Honey, would you like to take it first?” My mother called from the kitchen, still preparing dinner.

“Yeah, I would go and hit the bath first.”

While all of us were having dinner.

“Don’t go to sleep after dinner today, Hiyura. You remember the promise, right?”

I’m usually the type who goes straight to bed after dinner. But yesterday, Papa insisted I tag along with him to his friend’s house.

I nodded in reply.

“It would be a good chance for Hiyura to make a friend,” Mumma said excitedly.

“Yeah.” Both of them clinked their glasses like they’d just won a battle.

What does she mean by ‘friend’? Aren’t I just going to Papa’s friend’s house?

Papa and I on the bike. The classic move of going anywhere.

“Do you know what happened that day…” Papa started his stories.

A slightly chilly breeze, one of Papa’s stories rolling on, and me hugging tightly to his warm back — it feels so nice.

I heard the word friend from Mumma — does that mean they have a child my age? But that’s not the part I care about.

I am not someone who would be interactive with people.

It’s not that I hate doing it, nor I can’t do it, I just love to be in my silence.

I love to be in my fantasy world—especially my Pokémon world.

Reaching their place, Papa rang the bell.

Ting-tong.

A man with a polite smile on his face welcomed us in.

I could hear a dog barking. Is there a dog inside?

I followed the direction of the voice.

There was a very beautiful lady standing there, but what really caught my eye was the small figure trying to hide behind her.

She peeked out her head.

It was a girl, about the same height as me, with light brown eyes and hazel-coloured hair. It was the first time I had seen that hair colour — or maybe the second, now that I noticed her mother had the same.

She quickly pulled her head back.

We sat down. The two friends started chatting happily.

Though it was one-sided by my Papa. It somewhat reminded me of myself.

“Please have some juice.”

Her mother walked in, offering us glasses.

I nodded and took it.

Facing her husband, “Should I call Kamizo?”

She spoke with a smile on her face. “She would not come outside knowing strangers are in the hall.”

Before her father could speak, Papa spoke up.

“It’s fine, call her. Today is the day we are going to make both of them friends.”

Papa’s expression twisted into that of a mischievous scammer — like he’d just switched from Pokémon Master to Team Rocket leader.

Shit! He tricked me into this plan all along.

Both of them laughed a little.

“Yes, today we will introduce them to each other.” Her father said with a gentle smile.

Now Papa and I are sitting on one side, and Kamizo and her father are on the sofa opposite us.

She seemed clearly awkward. I could tell she was also a silent type — maybe even more of an introvert than me.

Her two little ponytails danced each time she turned her head to dodge eye contact.

I think this is it, there is no running from this situation, I have to do it. I should take the initiative.

I stood up from my seat.

“I’m Hiyura Miyamoto. I’m 5 years old and go to Peach Garden Kindergarten.”

Her expression softened a bit. She looked at me properly now, though still a little surprised.

Her mother gave her a gentle push to introduce herself.
Her face tensed up again, but she started speaking, awkwardly:

“I-I a-am Kamizo Chitanda… five… studying in Peach Garden Kindergarten.”

That’s when I realized why she looked surprised — we went to the same kindergarten. Maybe just in different sections.

I hadn’t seen her even once in kindergarten — and as a fellow silent partner, that made me wonder.
What was she like at school?
I spent most of my time lost in my own fantasy world… but what did she do in her free time?

I found myself getting a little curious.

I might just peek in another section, in my free time, to see.

We didn’t really talk after that — both of us just sat quietly with our fathers, while they carried on with the show.

Reality in front of me started to get distorted… dizzy…

Wake up! Hiyura! Wake up!

Mumma’s voice rang out, pulling me from sleep.

Still half-asleep, I sat up in bed.

“Hurry up — get to the bathroom.”

I nodded, wrapping the blanket tighter around me. It was cold outside, and sleep still possessed me.

I feel like… I had a dream.
Maybe I went somewhere?
Was there… a girl?

Hmm…

No matter how hard I try, I can’t remember it.

Later in kindergarten, during break time—while coming from the washroom.

B Section…

Something sparked in my brain — that weird feeling you get when you know you're forgetting something, but can’t remember what.

It felt like… I wanted to see someone.

Eh, leave it. If I forgot, maybe it wasn’t important.

Though I say that, I always forget my water bottle at school and end up getting scolded by Mumma.

Anyway, I’ve got my third gym battle coming up in my Pokémon world.
I know I can do better than Ash.
I’ll become the greatest Pokémon trainer ever.

After dinner.

Nah, I just can’t stay awake after dinner. My head gets all heavy, and everything starts to feel a little dizzy.

I fell victim to sleep the moment I touched the bed.

It’s B section.

Kamizo might be in this class. Should I take a little peek?

I looked here and there in search.

She was there.

Sitting near the window, reading a book. Her eyes were completely lost in the book. Without caring about the surroundings.

It somewhat reminded me of myself.

The other students were all busy with their own things —no one even glanced her way.

I see… she likes reading books.

I walked past.
